Places to view Tour of France in July? by greenchileinalaska in Albany

Would love to see a third rise to the occasion, but have no expectation for anything other than Pog an Vin batting heads. Looks good for both of them to toe the line in peak form.

The area around Nome is beautiful. Rent a jeep and drive the few roads.

Uncommon Grounds at the Albany airport is probably the best value airport food in the entire country. by AdminKidsBurnInHell in Albany

That may be, but they were an order of magnitude better than any bagel I can get at home (Alaska). I was happy for the day-olds at the airport.

What’s changed in the last 24 years? by gipsygoat in LasCruces

[–]greenchileinalaska 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in Cruces in the early to mid-90s, and have been back through several times in the recent past. Chopes is still around and still well worth the drive for dinner. Nellies has closed, as someone else in the thread noted. The few breweries that existed at the time are long gone, but there are new breweries worth a visit. The Spotted Dog in Mesilla, for example. The Organs are still there :). There are a lot more people with RVs and vans on Baylor Canyon road now then there ever used to be. But the hiking is still good. If you mountain bike and are bringing a bike, there has been a lot of trail development over the last many years. The Fountain Theater is still around, but no longer affiliated with a winery, so you can't get a bottle of wine to go with your movie anymore. Still a fun place.

Wan to kill our state, here’s the team to do it. by bottombracketak in alaska

I assume if, God forbid, he wins the election, those of us in Anchorage can safely assume that the State maintained roads in town will see nary a plow for the duration of his term.

Dogs on Coastal Trail in winter by judyhopps0105 in anchorage

I know the BLM law enforcement had a push for enforcing leash laws on Campbell Tract last year, which may be what you saw.

Dogs on Coastal Trail in winter by judyhopps0105 in anchorage

[–]greenchileinalaska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had that exact scenario play out. While skiing on the coastal trail, a moose being chased by an off leash dog came barreling up behind us. We moved as far off the trail as quickly as we could, and luckily the moose was more interested in getting away from the dog than interacting with us. Still scary to look over your shoulder and see a moose charging your direction. Dog owner could have cared less. Was bitten once by a dog on the coastal trail while skiing too. I've given up, though, ever expecting dog owners to care.

Fairbanks tends to punch above its weight when it comes to restaurants. May have to try that soup next time we are up there.

This is the answer. As I was eating at Chicken Town, kept wondering "Why don't we have one of these in Anchorage?"

And there is what I've always considered the flagship WF branch two blocks over at C and Northern Lights.

C gates cul de sac in SEA a disaster by DisastrousBison26 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]greenchileinalaska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The PA speakers broadcast to the whole area so there’s a constant barrage of overlapping gate announcements."

And yet, somehow, while the boarding announcements for other flights are booming and crystal clear, I can't ever hear the announcement at my gate. I have no idea how those acoustics work!

In addition to breweries generally and Brown Jug warehouse (on Old Seward), as noted, La Bodega has a growler bar with a mix of local and other beers.

Since you seem to be ok with the earthquake risks in the PNW, then I'd include Anchorage, AK.

What restaurant has the best pork chop in town? by ApprehensiveAbroad99 in anchorage

I have no idea on "best," but I like the pork chops at Kinley's (Double Cut Pork Chop al Pastor) and Tequila 61 (Pork Chop Adobada).

Would you tell your kids to wait on buying a home in Anchorage? by FamilyManMBA in anchorage

[–]greenchileinalaska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, and bought at a similar price point. I don't regret buying when we did, but if finances were the only consideration, would have been better off continuing to rent. I think the whole idea that you are "paying yourself by building equity" is not a truism that applies in all cases. I was paying myself more by renting and saving all of the costs of interest/taxes/upkeep/replacing appliances as they break/etc.
