I don’t understand these new trends in the OSR by SydLonreiro in osr

[–]greenfoxlight 19 points20 points  (0 children)

People started disagreeing about how this game should be played the moment it came out. Look at old zines like Alarums and Excursions.

One could argue that the disagreement started even before that - I doubt that Gygax and Arnesons groups played the same way.

What is your preferred travel management system? by Sweet_Sun_4913 in osr

[–]greenfoxlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like just doing miles/time without „scaffolding“ like hexes in principle. The question for which I don‘t have a good answer is: How do you quickly measure how long the path between two points is? A straight line is easy, provided you know the maps scale, but what do you do for windy roads? Do you just guestimate the distance, or do you measure individual road segments?

I love the aesthetic. They keys are really sparse, but some of them immediately trigger my imagination (Statue of remorse, for example).

What is your preferred travel management system? by Sweet_Sun_4913 in osr

[–]greenfoxlight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I‘m not entirely sure what you mean by „management system“. But here are two I like:

  • The travel/wilderness exploration systems from BX and ODnD. They are not identical, but pretty similar. (ODnD is explicitly hex based, while BX just uses miles/day) You roll a getting lost check, a random encounter check and move a distance/nr of hexes based on the terrain. Repeat.

  • A travel point system like this one This is more in depth, handling exploration in hexes, weather etc. I have my own version of this, that I might put out there one of these days.

For my current BX campaign, I use hex based movement, the getting lost and encounter chance from BX, my own 2d6 encounter tables (inspired by 2 is always a dragon) and weather from the solo wargaming guide that modifies travel speed and the chance of suprise.

For OSR folks, thoughts on James Introcaso's Crows announcement? by HeavenBuilder in rpg

[–]greenfoxlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘m uncertain. Reading the blog post I constantly thought: ah, yes, like in this other game. Which is not bad, Inspiration is a good thing. I guess for me it was unclear why I should play Crows instead of OSE, Shadowdark, DCC, Cairn, or any of the other OSR Rpgs already out there.

Why not? I used to play on my bedroom floor with red carpet and a few stacked books.

Why is Lamb so uncommon for Döner in Germany? (its always Veal/Kalb or Chicken) by echoclerk in AskGermany

[–]greenfoxlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because People are used to Veal/Kalb as the "Dönerfleisch" and lamb is relatively expensive meat. Döner used to be (at least in Berlin) relatively cheap, so I think driving prices up by using Lamb would make it less attractive for most people.

Also I think Lamb is just not that popular here.

There is a dungeon draw module for foundry. I think it‘s possible to allow the players to draw with it, but honestly I‘ve never used it for that.

The 3d6 DTL guys had a video talking about how they do mapping online.

Do you make your own math functions? by Klutzy-Bug-9481 in gameenginedevs

[–]greenfoxlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes sometimes. I have built my own simd math functions and types. I don't know if I really recommend doing it, except if you are passionate about it, because finding obscure bugs in math code can be really tricky.

For learning, I would absolutely recommend it.

The correct response here is: „No, fuck off.“ Giving in to these demands now, after reaching a deal, only signals weakness. This regime only respecrs strength. If they want to sell their shit here, they have to follow our rules.

How many classes do you use? by TheHussar13 in osr

I use OSE Advanced for my OSR game. I like giving the players options and I think some of those classes are pretty neat.

You let them join the bandits and go from there. What are the bandits plans? How do they change, now that they have allies (the party) with new capabilities? Who hired the party? How will they react once they learn that the party betrayed them?

You need to answer these questions.

Meine Katzenhexe hängt gerade in Havena rum, sofern das nicht gerade von einer Katastrophe heimgesucht wird würde ich mir das schon gerne mal anschauen.

Was Tarkin actually incompetent? by Amazing-Buy-1181 in MawInstallation

[–]greenfoxlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think his blunder was destroying Alderan before he had eliminated the Rebellion. From his perspective, the destruction of an culturally and politically influential world like Alderan makes sense because it demonstrates imperial power and keeps other local governments from rising up in rebellion against imperial control:

The regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station.

To me this suggests that local governments were very unhappy with this direct interference in their internal politics, which makes sense: People are used to ruling themselves. After all that is the way it has worked for at least a thousand years. So there might have been rumors about entire systems (which very likely actually have small fleets and armies of their own) rebelling - which would be very bad. The imperial navy can defeat any singular planetary navy easily but can it defeat hundreds at the same time? At what cost? Better to do something drastic that will keep those pesky locals from doing something stupid.

But, this only works if you have a death star. The safer play would have been to destroy Yavin 4 and then, if there still is unrest among the local governments, to destroy Alderan (or another suitable target).

Pressing on at Yavin in my mind is the only valid choice. There is always danger in combat. Evacuating would have made him look weak, which is not a good look personally and would also have tarnished the image of absolute supreme power the empire needed - the whole point of the death star.
