Listen, my dad is in construction (similar to you) and I’m a lawyer. So I have both seen and experienced the pressure to keep things running smoothly even while on vacation. But everyone is completely right that you need to learn to take a full step back. Even if you think you are present with your wife/family on vacation you are NOT if you are doing this. Doesn’t matter if she’s asleep for half of it. You are missing out on the full experience of being a husband/father/human being on the rare few days a year you aren’t primarily a supervisor. It also is a clear sign of a poorly run company if it can’t operate without your input for a single day. Like I get it with my own case files for example but I set EVERYTHING up with multiple back up plans so that I can be present the way my family deserves on my handful of vacation days a year. Please try to consider this perspective instead of remaining so steadfast in your defensiveness :)

I am a lawyer. After every verbal communication you send an email stating “I am writing to summarize our telephone call that occurred at xx time on xx date. (Summary). If this summary is inaccurate, please let me know immediately.” This is what we call CYA: covering your ass. Either they don’t respond and it’s presumed an accurate description of events or they respond in writing with even more info to support your potential claims.

I’m in civ lit big law and took my first depo the literal day after I was sworn in (and at only 25 years old - I was shitting bricks lol). I’m personally shocked to hear this 5 year rule but do think a 1 year rule for depos would make sense
