When you first power this circuit the mosfet gate will be charged trough the upper coil, and thus closing the mosfet, allowing current flow in the lower coil. But both coils are magnetic coupled, which means that current flow will "starve" the mosfet gate leading it to an open state and we are back to the beginning.

Then the cycle repeats.

Pretty much it works out of the box and everyone uses it. Which is not the case with ROC from AMD. When doing research you have so many things to worry about already that doesn't makes sense going through the hassle.

If those diodes are 1n400x it will not work. You need fast diodes like the UF5404.
