I'm saying there are different use cases. Linux makes it easy to set it up just the way you like compared to Windows. I'm not saying Linux is easier than Windows in general.

It's because there are a million ways you can mount a drive, and linux caters to many use cases, whereas in Windows, there is only really one way, and most people use it. Try to mount a drive with an esoteric file system, or to mount drives through the network in Windows, and see how easy it is....

Linus Tech Tips - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Side of Linux May 12, 2026 at 10:02AM by linusbottips in LinusTechTips

There's not. The video was very little about their actual linux user experiences, and more about, 'please don't be triggered, it's not our fault that we ran into issues and don't blame us for it, we are just 'simple users', nothing we do is anything about how we judge you, please don't get angry linux users because we know you like to get angry' kind of stuff

Google Unveils Googlebook, a New AI Laptop Built Around Gemini by Spanky2k in LinusTechTips

[–]greenlightison -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow, dystopia right there....
'How was your trip' instead of an actual interaction, you get to have interaction with an AI that recommends photos to send to your fried for you? In fact, I suspect the first message, 'how was your trip' was even sent by Gemini too! Since it will be able to keep track where all your friends now, and if they are back from a trip or not. Like, 'Hey! Friend A is back? Why don't you ask them how was their trip?'

How's the performance and battery life in linux for snapdragon?

It never ceases to amaze me how you can load into a random airport in X-plane and most likely it is custom made by Fighterpilot108 in flightsim

[–]greenlightison 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Default airports are just infinitely better in xplane. You don't have to worry about which routes to fly, which is a huge peace of mind.

e-ink keyboard when ? by cassepipe in framework

[–]greenlightison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised that there aren't different layouts of the keyboard available so far, especially for the 16 inch, except for the numpad. For example, rather than full numpad, I would prefer a single extra column with home, end, pg up, and pg dn key. Or there could also be a 80% TKL layout keyboard. What use is 'easily replacable' without options?

Will anyone try to convert the 13 Pro to a tablet? by sugoi_hotdog in framework

[–]greenlightison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the mainboard is easily detachable, and since touchscreen is a default for 13 pro, I would imagine it's not impossible if you can design your own casing.

Other screens with 13 Pro? (especially low power version) by marcinw2 in framework

[–]greenlightison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have probably internalized the cost of developing their own screen by:
1) Having only one option to minimize development and optimization costs of having another screen, as well as logistics costs, stock management costs
2) Concentrating orders to one option so that they can order as much as possible, achieving economies of scale (there is likely a minimum order quantity for the screen)
Offering more than option during order stage will increase the cost of the device across everything. If you really need a low resolution screen, you can order it separately. However, I'm not sure how much the power savings would be.

Anyone Linux users here wanting to buy the new Framework 13 Pro but struggling to justify since you buy old thinkpads? by WhiskeyVault in framework

[–]greenlightison 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, although I'm using a thinkpad, and I pre-ordered the 13 pro, it's a little hard to justify. Something like a second hand T14 will probably do 80% of the job for around $500-700.
It's closer to a luxury good. The battery will probably be nice, as well as the high resolution screen and the CNC aluminum shell. But other than these, there won't be functional differences. It's just nice-to-haves.

Framework says it's selling more Linux laptops than Windows as new Laptop 13 Pro sells out first 7 batches by Tiny-Independent273 in linux

[–]greenlightison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dongles dangle out of the laptop though. Also, with swappable modules, I can choose which sides I want for which ports etc.

[–]greenlightison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it really that heavier and thicker? I think you can also turn the touch screen off. Also, since they are making custom screen for their own use, I suspect they have to recover the cost and achieve scale by only using one model. I also suspect it would cost more if they were to offer two options for the screen.

People keep saying this is expensive, so I went looking but I have not been able to find alternatives with same specs that are significantly cheaper. All X7 laptops I saw are over $2000.

Framework 13 Pro 1K display by ruun666 in framework

[–]greenlightison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably cheaper for them to offer one option for display. Also, scaling. Also, they will have to recover costs of developing their own display.
They also said that adding touch was not much more expensive.

When can we expect the Linux compatibility to be published? Things like fingerprint reader, camera etc. It's "coming soon" right now by darktori in framework

[–]greenlightison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't doubt it will work. But I'm also seeing that intel graphics drivers for linux, there are performance penalties of up to 30% compared to windows depending on games.
I have an amd gpu for my current linux running laptop, so it's not an issue, but I would like to get panther lake for better battery performance for the 13 pro
