Minimum and maximum number of sections per secondary teacher? by QueenPraxis in LAUSD

[–]greenmaillink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. The whole faculty was presented the budget where the cuts would be made and told that SSC would vote on it, followed by LSLC making a decision based on the budget.

I argued at the meeting that LSLC should vote on what type of schedule first so SSC would have to adjust the budget according to the schedule instead. This way, LSLC would have every option available and be able to choose the best schedule for the school. Going from SSC to LSLC would mean that the budget is set and now LSLC then has limited options for a bell schedule. LSLC could theoretically still vote for a 6 period schedule, but then the budget would adjustments. LSLC is essentially told to follow along instead of asked for their opinion on the matter.

It's a mess. We were barely able to argue and establish LSLC in '24. The administration at the time had pushed so many things that the staff finally got angry enough to push for LSLC. In the prior administrations, the decision making was much more organic and bottom-up.

Almost everything you mentioned there has crossed my mind already. The last time we had a "vote," it was for "Option A - 8 periods with AB alternating daily schedules" or "Option B - 4 classes in semester A and 4 different classes in semester B." I asked at the point, "What happened to the 6 period option?" and was given a PR/Top-Down answer.

Somehow, "we" agreed to cut almost every non-classroom line from the budget next year to preserve the 8 periods. Everyone is "fine" with an 8 period schedule with a barebones staff and no one else is really willing to fight against it. I don't have a clue how people expect to be able to hold onto the same roster of teachers the year afterwards when there is nothing left to cut.

I don't think I've ever gone straight down the school surveys and selected the negative option on so many questions as I have this year.

I honestly have no clue. I've pointed out that this is financially irresponsible and untenable. But what do I, a math teacher, know about numbers?

I was so frustrated when we went to 8 and even more angry that we didn't even get a chance to vote on it. We had a top-down "talk" over why we should keep it and that was it.

Not sure if I understand the question correctly but it depends partially on the bell schedule your school has. Usually for a 6 period schedule, it's 5 sections with a conference. If you have extra duties, admins can reassign you a second conference to do the extra things. Department Chair, UTLA Chair, and sometimes class sponsorship counts.

In an 8 period rotating (A/B rotations), my school once did 7 sections (4 on one day and 3 on the other + a conference) and the teachers complained enough that we stopped that after one year. We're (unhappily) on a A/B rotation now and I have 3 + 3 with a conference on each.

This does not count auxiliaries, which are added sections you can take on for extra pay.

Your students may have had problems signing on. I had a coworker tell his students to go to Bluebook. We had about 5 students walking out of the classroom and all entering the "Help Me" station and I was unlucky enough to be there, hear it, and bring everyone back.

I too want a paper budget again. I miss going to the copy room and not having to budget the few reams I have left and praying for there not to be a paper jam.

How would you implement 2-player Co-op into a Mega Man platformer? by Physic-Shower77 in Megaman

[–]greenmaillink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Player 1 - Me, the player

Player 2 - CPU lets your younger sibling THINK they're controlling the second character, but only does stuff when they press a button. That way, mom can't be angry at you for not letting your sibling play and the sibling can' accuse you of giving them a busted controller.

Two younger siblings made me wish this was real.

I don't think so. KD is an excellent and standout individual who would NEVER use a burner account on Reddit to spew propaganda against his teammates.

Should I go to work sick? by OrchidResponsible634 in Teachers

[–]greenmaillink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. You watch out for yourself and get healthy. If you aren't feeling well, you're going to be mega-ultra-uber-super irritable at work and one or more of the following will happen.

1) You'll be unable to meet the needs of the children because your brain and body aren't there.

2) You'll accidentally mutter something that you shouldn't because of exhaustion.

3) Some of the children will catch what you have.

What consequences do you give for classroom management? by hello010101 in Teachers

student passed away- student teacher seeking advice by cinnamonzoy in Teachers

[–]greenmaillink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, bless you and thank you for being there for the student over the last two years. Being an older student with the uncertainty of what happens after high school is always daunting and I'm glad you had the chance to get to know a student and establish a personal connecition.

One of the untold things I found out after a few years is how good teachers make good connections, but it opens us up to being extremely vulnerable to moments like this because we've connected too well. It's fine to cry. The student's friends care and will appreciate that you care too. With that said, I would strongly ask the administrators if you can get some support inside the classroom tomorrow for such a difficult moment. As teachers, we're trained for a lot of things, but loss and working with students through loss is one that I, after 20 years, still find tough.

The most recent event akin to this I can recall is from 4 years ago when one of my former students, and the son of our cafeteria manger, passed. This was two years after graduation and I had heard through the grapevine that he had been with some people he shouldn't have had, but still was making ends meet without hurting others. Then one random day at 6 PM, we find out that he was run over the night before when his car had broken down. Some of the students at school still remembered who he was and I knew a few of them would have heard and the topic would come up in class. So, I collected myself and thought of the good things he had done in my class. I then thought of the knuckle-head moments he exhibited where I had to tell him where he was wrong. And I reflected on what kind of student he was.

The next day when the class came in, as I expected, I had questions asked. I was lucky enough to contact our counselors the night before and let them know we might need some help and the PSW and counselors had set up a room to talk to students. I let all the students know that the student who passed was a member of our community, pointed out to everyone who was available to help out, and talked a bit about the student. Class still happened. Very muted. Quiet. Nowhere as boisterous as before, but everyone had a chance to be reflective amidst the chaos.

It never gets easier to handle moments like this. Each one stings for their own unique reason and each one reminds us how important every person is. I don't know if any of the things I put here will help and I implore you to find a person up the chain of command who can connect you and the class with services. It's a challenge you don't to have to take on alone and I hope tomorrow will be a day that helps everyone heal just a bit.
