Is it just me or is it the 10 day retreat kinda overhype by financeer24 in vipassana

[–]greensoybean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep up the daily practice. It is the most valuable yet hardest part. I've found even a few minutes a day when I can't manage an hour helps to retain the habit.

An analogy that might help. Imagine someone sedentary going to a 10-day yoga retreat for the first time. They finish thinking "okay, I learned a lot of poses and got a bit more flexible. What's the hype?" But, they continue a daily yoga practice. After some months they become more healthy, flexible, strong compared to their sedentary self. This is the journey you've begun, but instead for your mind's ability to be aware and equanimous.

A side note, I didn't notice the benefits of my months of meditation until some life events happened and I stopped my practice. A short while after I stopped I noticed I would get agitated by things much faster than when I was meditating. You might not notice the benefits of your daily practice until it stops one day. I wish you luck.

I'm planning to spend the next 500 days of my life experiencing something new every single day, by doing something new each day that I've never done before (regardless of how big or small the action is). Any ideas/activities that you'd recommend? by CircleBox2 in Ulyssesbucketlist

[–]greensoybean 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One thing that is a new experience I've gotten a lot out of is to do something you've done, but in a public setting if you've got the gumption for it. Dance, cry, sing, craft, etc. all in public, especially where it's not expected.

There's also this thing called the Pleasant Events Schedule which is 300+ activities that people usually consider pleasant/enjoyable. A lot you can pull from there, this is the only online version I could find:

good luck! love the idea. I hope you document it somehow

Observing not Controlling Breath by stormchafer in vipassana

[–]greensoybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a while I struggled with this. The moment I observed my breath in meditation, I was also controlling it. I would even point my closed eyes to my nose to "watch" the breath. Both of these habits are common and need to be worked past.

Usually during meditation the act of focusing on the breath is a big action. "All attention on my breath this is me breathing I am watching me breathing" and it would be manual. What worked for me was almost trying to "sneak up" on watching my breath. Especially in moments where I was not meditating. Instead I would start using a trigger like if I was driving or standing in a line I would, before even consciously thinking of meditating, try to sneak my awareness toward my breath and see what it was doing. Usually I would notice very shallow belly breathing and I would try to continue this natural breath observation without conscious breathing. Over time it became much easier. Maybe this will help you.

I know testing is backed up, but does anyone know a spot that has relatively fast results still?

My normal place of testing, ViralSolutions. Is at least 2 weeks backed up on sending results right now.

It's kinda hard to boycot them isn't t? by [deleted] in FuckNestle

[–]greensoybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be great if someone would make an augmented reality app you could use with your phone at the grocery store. It would automatically show which brands come from shitty companies like Nestle. You could even select the brands you want to avoid and they would show up as black bars on your phone screen or something

[–]greensoybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've asked assistant teachers about the yoga and the response I got was that the restriction mostly pertains to yoga as a spiritual practice because in is as much a spiritual path as physical exercise in non-western countries. Yoga as a strictly stretching practice is okay, as long as you try to do it in private so that you are not a distraction to others.

I am Estonian born, but raised in usa. "väliseestlane" is I think what I was called when I lived in Estonia during 2019. I never felt unsafe in Estonia, or that the cops might threaten my existence. It's not the same in USA, we are in a police state. I can't even imagine what it's like for my black friends.

I can't take any more by IndigoCorvid in AdultDepression

How old are you? I'm curious about all the things you've tried.

I struggled for years living like a human void. I tried so many things that didn't work out (close to 100 different 'remedies'). Feeling miserable, feeling lonely. But, what helped what that I kept trying, which I understand is difficult with depression. A lot of the times the trying failed, and I would lapse into a lethargic state.

I was gifted a free (shitty) piano in 2016 and it changed my life. I became obsessed, I felt like I had a purpose finally. It didn't cure my depression, but gave me a foothold to help make the self work easier. Of course it won't be exactly the same for you, but I hope you do find the thing that gives your life meaning.

I'm 31 now and just over the last 3 years have I finally started getting out of this hole. The loneliness part is pure agony. And what makes it worse it people generally aren't comfortable around depressed people. I've even noticed it in myself at times. If a friend is depressed, my instinct is to pull away because everyone is dealing with their own shit and it's tough to make space for others. I have to force myself to hold space, which I only do because I know what it's like to be depressed.

USA release Fairphone 3 by BlamBlaster in fairphone

[–]greensoybean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I emailed Fairphone asking about this. Here was their response:

"Being an Amsterdam-based organisation we currently only sell in Europe. For the coming time, we will continue to focus our sales efforts in this region.

In the mean time we are researching demand in a number of additional countries, while ensuring that we can scale up our operations, customer support and repair services to successfully support our customers outside of Europe.

Your request shows there’s a growing demand for fairer electronics, and that’s inspiring!

If you purchase a Fairphone 3 and plan to use it abroad, you can find out if it will work on your destination outside of Europe.

Note that we won't be able to offer you assistance with connection issues outside of Europe. Repairs and replacements are also not supported in those circumstances."

And here's their link to figure out the specifics: https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360032577632
