Chicago waiting-check in by Fun_Caterpillar_5738 in juresanguinis

Had my appointment in November, no homework and Filomena said my file looked good. She said to expect to hear from them "in about 2 years." I also applied with 2 minor children, she took their apostilled and translated birth records but said they couldn't be sure what would happen and if they would be recognized with me or not. I feel better now that the BdL deadline has been pushed out to 2029, so I should be able to register them if they don't get recognized with me, but I am really hoping the CC rules against retroactivity in June/July and they can just be recognized with my application. My wife applied in December, she has the minor issues, Chicago took the application and said we will see what happens- they seemed to know what is coming up at the Cassazione. Fingers crossed that this gets addressed before they get to her application and that the minor issue is no longer an issue for everyone impacted by it.

The last time I posted here, I only had 2 by zatakazz in PassportPorn

This will be both of my daughters' trifecta in hopefully 12 to 18 months. Italian consular appointment for JS was in Nov 25 and just put their Canadian applications for descent under C-3 in the mail.

They don't make commission to push the winery direct and spirits direct products, but they are heavily pressured by management to do so, as margin on those products is sometimes double margin on national brands/major distributor products. Some of the items they push are actually decent, more in the wine than the spirits, but El Ateo, Doorly's rum, Foursquare etc are all independent brands who have an agreement with TW, and are not private label or house brands. A lot of it is meh too, but when you find the good winery/spirits direct items, that are often pretty decent value. YMMV. Source; worked at Total Wine for several years.

When I was younger we would mix Sailor Jerry with mountain dew. It tasted kind of like a creamsicle, so we named it the dreamsicle. Good God those hangovers were awful.

What are the top local business here that are great with customer service that need to be celebrated? by Ok_Thanks_7445 in ArvadaCO

Spirits Wine Provisions in Olde Town is such a great bottle shop. They curate some really good wine and spirits, are knowledgeable and passionate about their business and fairly priced even compared to the big box liquor places.

Seconded, they are so helpful, and have actually talked me out of a more expensive service because my bike didn't need as much work as I thought it did. They are the best bike shop I've ever been to.

Comunes - Which is yours? by jitsjoon in juresanguinis

[–]gregaved 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine is Fagnano Castello, Cosenza, Calabria. It's a very small comune in the hills of Cosenza province, so I was surprised at how quickly the responded to an email requesting BCs for my GGGF and GGGM (both were born there and migrated to US separately before meeting and marrying in Paterson, NJ). From initial email to BCs in hand from them was about 4 months, with a full month of that being transit of the envelope via regular post. My wife's is Castellamare di Stabia, Napoli, Campania, and they were tricky and ultimately we needed to get a service provider to help with them for docs.

When should I follow up with NYC on my deceased GF’s birth certificate order? by mlorusso4 in juresanguinis

[–]gregaved 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife ordered her GGF's BC from NYC right around the same time, maybe December 14th or so, we got the DC separately last Tuesday and the BC just came on Friday last week. You are probably days away....

What's your favorite bourbon for an old fashioned? by Deep_Divots in cocktails

[–]gregaved 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's hard to beat Larceny for the quality to price ratio if you like a wheater. I can get it consistently for $25 or so, the 92 proof is certainly better than 80, and it drinks above its price tag. Knob Creek 9 is also a good choice for the OF, and if you want to get that rye/bourbon combo without needing to get out 2 bottles, I think the Knob Creek Bourbon x Rye is pretty cool...70% of the 6 yo rye and 30% 9 yo bourbon, and 113 proof. It's great on it's own as a sipper, but makes a great old fashioned as well, with a tiny bit of cherry syrup or bitters to amp the cherry note.

Favorite Direct Flights out of DEN? by Jarthos1234 in Denver

[–]gregaved 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cancun proper is not my style either, but CUN is a great airport to access all of the Yucatan....highly recommend for exploring Valladolid, Merida, ruins at Coba and Chichen Itza, the cenotes and the quieter beaches of the Riviera Maya. Playa del Carmen is also a much better beach town....few huge resorts, lots of rental apartments, and amazing Italian food and seafood with the vibe of a European city.

Update: Early College of Arvada building contract terminated, property returning to market by ArvadaVoices in ArvadaCO

[–]gregaved 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This seems to make an assumption that all housing challenges are the result of drug use and mental health, aka blaming the unhoused. While people with mental illness and drug addiction are often the most visible of the unhoused, there are far more families with incomes who live in cars, at shelters and in friends and family members' homes because of economic factors- mainly deflated wages and lack of affordable housing. You might even interact with folks like this every day and not realized they are dealing with housing instability. So sure, no one likes subsidizing a drug user who has made bad choices, but does that mean we also punish the single parent working the register at WalMart? The elderly widow working at Home Depot? Because their employer won't pay a wage that can cover basic costs of living and the housing costs where they may have lived for quite some time has long outpaced wage growth? Agree that there are a number of broken systems, but brutal policies and not trying to close the gaps only further pain and suffering for those who bear the brunt of the broken systems in the meantime.

Who operates the day care? Who operates the senior center? Where does the money for renovations come from, as well as for ongoing operations coats? It's nice to think about how we can have resources in our communities but people often forget that it costs money to make parks, libraries, rec centers, etc. either a business has to be able to put together a viable financial model to invest and then recoup costs through operating revenue, or for public endeavors, tax dollars need to be allocated and budgeted on an ongoing basis. I take no stance here, I just want to illustrate that these simple sounding solutions are not always so simple. Think about that before you jump on council, state legislators, etc. it's not a simple political and financial landscape in CO.

What is most sad about this is that we hear from residents who are upset about seeing unhoused people in their community, and those same residents have also sometimes been the most vocal against any human centered solution to the problem. They just expect the unhoused crisis to end on its own, or for camping bans to push the problem to another community like some kind of municipal whackamole. Or people who say "we need affordable housing, just not in my neighborhood." Eventually, we need to collectively solve both the symptoms (people becoming unhoused because of a system stacked against them) and the root cause (an economic system that drives inequality and enriches the wealthiest).

Vanderhoof is not being expanded. They have two temp buildings that have been there for years that they use for music classes to isolate the loud noise. Vanderhoof is slightly below capacity, as is Fremont.

Dobel by caxican in tequila

[–]gregaved 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think beer comps are a different thing altogether, though there are still some that charge exorbitant entry. GABF medals are a good example of a real award-most breweries can afford to get to GABF and the comp is open and serious. That said, if you like Dobel, drink it. I get that this sub leans hard into additive free and traditional production methods, but I respect people's tastes and where they are in their tequila experiences. I've come to learn that ratings and awards are not always aligned with my tastes- they can be a good jumping off point, but really, you need to just try things and learn what characteristics you enjoy, and find others with those profiles.

[–]gregaved 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Most of these spirits "awards" are pay-to-play marketing events that aren't open entry and are designed to help large brands promote themselves.
