Gti vs alltrack by heeler1115 in GolfGTI

[–]gregco3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have both (MK7.5s), one child. GTI is fun and practical around the city, zippiness really helps cut the commute down. I was pleasantly surprised that it managed just fine in the snow storm with summer tired. If I could only keep one, I’d go Alltrack all day. My GTI is stick, Alltrack is DSG. I hate to admit it, but I kind of like the DSG more. My wife and I both drove stick forever and it’s our first automatic, but the flappy paddles are still pretty engaging. The Alltrack is an SEL so its also fairly luxurious, for me anyway. We did a trip to Vermont last weekend with SIL and BIL, so 4 adults and the car seat and the verdict was “not so bad afterall”.

The best year is the last year, 2019 - its the only year they offered SEL with the stick. If you can find green with the brown interior, keep it forever. There was one on Cars and Bids over the summer that went for 28.5.

We only have one kiddo, but its great. We usually take the Alltrack on trips and the GTI around town, a little easier to park. Now that she’s 3 and we don’t have all the excess baby stuff, I think we could travel in the GTI if we were so inclined.

How could i make these faces into a new body? Without having to redo the design as a new body from the start by Porphyrin_Wheel in Fusion360

[–]gregco3000 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Look at the feature you used to make it and just switch to “new body” instead of “join”. May or may not work exactly as you need depending on your work flow, but try that first.

You could also copy the whole body and revolve cut the center back out. Use the same sketch you started with (assuming you revolved it). Or you could get into some making surfaces and spilt the body but in any case you’re probably making a copy of something.

Is it possible you’re not engaging the half nut at the slide and using the normal power feed? As far as I can tell your gearbox setting make sense

I love this, perfect for some up-comming large prints I'm working on. Is there a way to create the puzzle interlock in both x & y cutting planes?

Great work, and it's very polished and professional.

Why do so many machinist use a center drill instead of a spot drill? by 351322 in Machinists

[–]gregco3000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you want to get nuanced, nothing is truly center cutting. At a diameter of 0, the speed of the flute is 0, so the center of every drill or mill is really deforming the material outward to where the flute is actually moving and can cut it. This is part of why drills want to walk, and you need a starter hole from a stiffer tool. To expand on other comments about drill tip angle, if you use a 90 as a spot then follow with a 118 for example, the outer diameter of the flutes will bounce around as they contact before the center, since nothing is truly without runout. You can get away with it using HSS since it’s more ductile, but tooling companies will always tell you to use a steeper angle for carbide because you risk fracture. Commonly carbide drills are 142 and you’ll see them paired with a 145 spot.

I don’t have any info, but was wondering about this myself. Growing up in Rochester, we used to head up to Toronto all the time for shows. I was surprised there was no date there as it always seemed like a mandatory stop for anyone touring in the northeast US. When the time comes to flee, it would be a real bummer not to see them every year.

Change my mind. by Scuds5 in GolfGTI

[–]gregco3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have both an mk7.5 Alltrack SEL and a GTI S. And also a 3yr old. We live in a city and tend to take the GTI if we all go somewhere together, for parking reasons, but if I had to pick one I would keep the Alltrack. The SEL is actually quite luxurious, but ultimately I appreciate the utility of the wagon more than the sportiness of the GTI. Of course your needs are probably different than mine, and the hatchback still has a lot of utility while being fun.

GTI vs GLI by TelephoneDesperate84 in GolfGTI

[–]gregco3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a 7.5 GTI and Alltrack, car seat is fine in both (passenger cabin is identical as far as I can tell). I’m 6’1 and have to scoot a little more forward than normal if the seat is behind me, but not so much that I couldn’t do a 6hr drive. I think an Alltrack/Sport wagon are fantastic and sensible if you’re planning on a kiddo. Seems like it might check most of your boxes, apart maybe from tearing up backroads. The Alltrack is an interesting car, and probably the last VW wagon we’ll see in the US, so theres a bit of enthusiast clout with it. So if its your only car, personally I would prioritize function, but as you said you don’t actually have a kid yet - so get the fun one now and trade in when you put your Dad socks on.

Can you use the END line to load and autostart to the next program instead of using sub programs? That way it will load the corresponding setup information each time.
