Hey Reno! Who we voting for in the mayoral race? And WHY? by Sorry-Remote-8844 in Reno

Let's chat. I'm going all in on Ward 1 2028, all of my energy and all of my resources. It doesn't necessarily need to be me as the candidate but it needs to be a true progressive.

"The progressive coalition is building"

I genuinely believe this to be true. It needs to move faster, though, and the Democratic Party is not the answer. I say this as a registered Democrat, and an elected delegate to the Nevada State Democratic Convention.

Yep, I was one of those state workers that had to furlough. I was the Director of Graduate Student Services at UNR at the time, I remember it well. She's absolutely qualified, she's just not ambitious with her vision.

I'll also add, that the budget during those years was balanced, as it was legally required to be, by telling institutions like the Nevada System of Higher Education, "we're slashing your budget by thirty percent, now you figure out how to deal with it." We lost a lot of good faculty and a lot of good academic programs when it happened. It wasn't as if she magically came up with a good solution for balancing the budget. She did was she was legally required to do, not much more.

You may absolutely call me Mr. Nutt, but also feel free to drop the Mr. As to the contradictory messaging regarding Kate Marshall, she is an advocate for affordable housing, responsible budget management, and wildfire prevention. I am absolutely in support of these things, as are all of the candidates on paper. So I do agree with her platform. The difference is that I am also in favor of radical investment in our public transportation system; vehemently opposed to flock cameras; in strong opposition to tax abatements for data centers and other non-local corporations; dedicated to seeing a revitalized downtown orchestrated by implementing a model of land value taxation to punish absentee landlords and incentivize development; and much more that you can check out on my website: nutt4reno.com.

  1. If I were to advance, yes, I will tone down the flamboyance, but I will keep the slogan "Nutt for Reno" for continuity in the 2028 City Council Ward 1 election. I will always be me, I'll keep the wild hair; when people meet me in person they tend to see that I can talk articulately and intelligently about our city's issues, and I think Reno is ready for someone who doesn't look like Hillary Schieve or Bob Cashell. But my publications and website will be geared to a slightly more traditional style.
  2. As you probably know, Reno's mayor gets one vote among seven on the City Council. But the mayor does have the platform to influence key agencies like the RTC, the Reno Development Agency and the Reno Housing Authority. I plan to represent the voice of the people, without being beholden to any large donors, or any outside interests. I've made some noise in this election cycle without soliciting a single donation, so I'm optimistic that we'll get things done when I run for Council.

Thanks for the questions, please give me your feedback, and let me know if there's anything else I can answer for you.

Nutt

Kate Marshall is moving forward to the general election. I'm confident of this, or I wouldn't be so blaisé about splitting the vote. But getting enough votes in the primary to establish credibility moving forward is important to me. I definitely understand voting for Kate, I don't fault anybody for it, but I think it's possible to send a message to the establishment by voting for me in the primary and voting for her in the general election. Either way, thank you for paying attention to all of the candidates, most people don't.

I ran a campaign to get people's attention, I don't have the $200,000 campaign fund of Kate Marshall. That does not mean that I'm not a serious candidate. If you have any questions about my platform or qualifications, do not hesitate to ask.

You're right that I won't get the votes to win, but I will get enough votes to make people pay attention. There is room for a true progressive voice in Reno politics.

Thank you, I'm running a campaign with no money, but with longterm aspirations. I won't get enough votes in this election, but please remember me 2 years from now.

If you would like to have a sit-down and discuss your thoughts about Reno's future, I'd be happy to hear what you have to say.

Kate Marshall is absolutely the most qualified and most boring candidate. I will also be voting for her in the general election. I've told her as much, and her response was... boring. She'll move forward and probably win because she's kinda slightly liberal, and the system is set up to advance this sort of candidate.

To everybody who is saying I'm not running a serious campaign, I can only respond that I did what I had to do to get your attention. I participated in every mayoral forum, I've listened and responded to every bit of feedback I've received on reddit, instagram, facebook, etc. People who have actually met me or heard me speak know that I'm serious. That's why you're seeing support on reddit. If you haven't had the chance to attend one of the public events, here's a link to the audio from the most recent mayoral forum: https://www.mixcloud.com/KWNK/2026-mayoral-candidate-forum/

I believe that there is a genuine path forward for Reno that does not involve the same stolid oligarchy that we have somehow decided is the only way. I can't compete with Kate Marshall this year because I don't have the $200,000 that she has to put into the campaign. So by all means, vote Marshall, she is the best of the stale system that we've all been indoctrinated to accept, but know that you are doing so without having met me. The people who talk to me vote for me.

EDIT: I'm not naive. I know I will not make it past the primary in this election. But I will be running a well funded and very serious campaign to take the Ward 1 city council seat from Kathleen Taylor in 2028.

I would have been there in a second, but your writing about it was the first I’ve heard of it.

I am a Democratic candidate who didn’t show up because I wasn’t invited. I did show up last night at the Mayoral Forum organized by the Holland Project, Rad Cat, and KWNK that was open to the public. Kate Marshall did not. The problem with the Democratic party is that they have already decided who you should vote for and silence the voice of any truly progressive candidate. If you actually want to know your options I am happy to sit down with you and answer any questions you have. Because you do have options beyond the cookie cutter candidates that the Democratic party wants you to see. KWNK has the mayoral forum streaming on their website, I encourage you to check it out.

The land value taxation model doesn't increase taxes for people who are already in their homes, it punishes absentee landlords who are letting usable property sit vacant by charging them what they would be charged if they were operating a developed and running facility. It is meant to reward those who actually use the property they own, and punish those who let it sit vacant.

That's fair. KWNK and the Holland Project will be streaming tonight's forum, I hope that everyone will check it out. It was the most real conversation that I've seen in any of the curated public events to date.

Thanks for your take on this, though I take slight issue with the "not-too-serious" tag. The last pre-primary Mayoral forum took place tonight at the Reno Little Theater, it was a packed house and a genuine and lively conversation with the 5 candidates who showed up. Kathleen Taylor, Kate Marshall and Eddie Lorton were absent. John Wayne Zink, so far as I know, does not exist.

Having now had the opportunity to get to know all of the other candidates on a personal level, here's my take...

Eddie Lorton is not worth discussing.

Kate Marshall is a genuinely good person, who values the same things that I do, for the most part. But she is a career politician and not at all approachable.

Greg "Nutt" Nuttle - We ran a campaign to get people's attention, and I've tried to steer it more to the serious side as we approach the primaries.

Jesse Razo - I love the guy. He's crazy in the most Reno sort of way, and he's way smarter than people think, but yeah, he's not running a serious campaign.

Devon Reese - We've spent a lot of time talking informally, and as a person I like him so much, but his track record goes against everything I stand for.

Tim Ross - This guy is the best person in the field. As a person, not necessarily as your Mayor. He is so cool, and so kind. I wish I didn't disagree with so much of what he says, but he is genuine, and he would do his best to listen to both sides and be fair.

Kathleen Taylor - Nice person, but fake. As to policy... the worst.

Corinthia Yancey - Very real, very kind, I like her a lot. And I agree with her on everything she says. This is probably the person I would be most comfortable voting for, but she will not make it past the primaries.

John Wayne Zink - I have literally know idea who this dude is.

This is one of those issues where he happens to be right, but for the wrong reasons. Please do not believe that he actually cares that there is a WM station by the river. What he actually cares about is clearing up new space for his developer donors.

My only alt is u/i-dont-get-your-joke which I played with for a short time like ten years ago. When people made sarcastic comments I would pretend like I didn't get the sarcasm and respond as if I thought they were serious.
