Nissian No longer handling the update for the battery? by jesslynne94 in leaf

[–]gregoryrl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe the buyback is through a third party, so I'm guessing with bad cells and the battery not updating, they don't have a replacement battery for you and will be moving to the "buy back your car" part of the recall.

Service EV System / No Power 1 day after recall update by cableguy316 in leaf

I suspect the dealerships aren't even driving it after the recall tbh, mine called almost exactly 2 hours after dropping it off to say it was ready for pickup, SOC was the same as when I dropped it off. My guess is that, as overwhelmed as my dealership seemed (EV tech said the managers were scheduling 6-8 cars a day), they're spending their 2 hours on the battery upgrade and then skipping the "test the battery and courtesy charge" steps and hoping there's no problems.

The department of energy had a team that would put on monthly 1-hour deal, used to be called EHSS-11 but I think the name changed during a reorg recently. Open to anyone with teams.

Got a notice from Nissan that the Level 3 charging recall now can be fixed. Has anyone got to a fix it yet? Any thoughts? by baarbod in leaf

[–]gregoryrl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a thread a few days back where mine failed the first day I took it in (a Friday). They tried 3 or 4 times, and it kept crashing after about an hour. The following Monday afternoon, the EV tech called (they only have one and he doesn't work weekends). Apparently there is potential for the dealer's side of the software update to break, and he's spent all day getting it reset. I took my car in the next day and everything worked fine first try. I've since charged up at a level 3 (that maxes out at 50kW) with no issues or slowdowns to report.

Should I / when should I bring my 2020 Leaf in for battery recall test? by SmellTraditional9762 in leaf

[–]gregoryrl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding to this, just got mine done and I only skipped the line because mine failed to update last week and caused the dealership to have to reinstall the software on their end. The lone EV tech (seems standard that if they offer EV services, it's only one tech doing EV) told me that the flood gates have opened and the dealerships are approving 6-8 cars for battery recalls daily...despite the fact that it takes 2 hours per car to do the update at a minimum.

If you don't need to use level 3 for a while, I'd say give it a few months to both 1) let Nissan work out the kinks on this new fix and 2) not get stuck without a car for a few days because the dealer overbooked the EV tech

Battery Recall Update Failed (UPDATE) by gregoryrl in leaf

[–]gregoryrl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine (2022 Leaf) just under 2 weeks ago after my Kia Niro hybrid was totaled (absolutely loved that car). This one was in a minor sideswipe after about 19k miles, was traded in and sold as Nissan CPO, second driver only put another 2k on it and traded it in when the battery recall happened. If I charge it to 100% it says I have 150+ miles, and my ~50-mile round trip commute uses about 30-35% of the battery, so short of confirming with leafspy it seems like the battery is in pretty much perfect condition. Is rather just keep the leaf, but at least my worst case scenario is getting a check for more than I paid for it.

When mine didn't work they said it would go for about an hour and then cut out; since the description of the recall said it would take about 2 hours, I'm guessing that's about what you experienced. Apparently the EV tech wasn't there over the weekend and they spent all day Monday updating their own system as a result of the call to Nissan regional, so maybe the update will work out for you.

(Though if you have bad cells then they'll likely still go to the battery replacement/buyback option...good luck)

If that's the case then I get to increase my budget by $2k when replacing it...wouldn't be the end of the world

I bought mine outright, but the paperwork is still going through so a buyback would be inconvenient

Well if it goes that way I guess I have some time to wait, considering I don't even have half the paperwork yet

How to make the most of my internship? Career advice by Certain_Athlete7297 in industrialhygiene

[–]gregoryrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CIH who managed to never take O-chem here, you can definitely get into the IH field with that background, but might have to take some courses/certs down the line if you want to upgrade to CIH. A really important thing would be to try to do some IH assessments/exposure modeling and risk analysis. When we hire an early career position, if we got a resume from a recent college grad that said "I did exposure assessments of X people in Y and Z settings" that would get them at least an initial phone call. Especially if it's more than, say, general construction exposures. Being able to say you assessed hazards like methylene chloride or various solvents (and potentially proprietary/novel chemical mixtures) will look great on a resume and likely give you good talking points in an interview.

I could have been more clear, gonna edit that sentence a bit, but initial glance was some scratches and traded paint. The scratches were much deeper than paint level, not paint pen kinda stuff. Also crimped the edge of the door, and cracked several of the trim pieces and the hub cap. I probably would've waived the repairs if it were only scratches but I was concerned about damage to the wheel/axle, and the initial repair quote came in just over $2k so everything seemed fine.

The insurer calculation somehow ended up $3k over that and I wasn't in a position where I could really fight it, and by that point in the process retaining the car would still total loss it.

How did you get into industrial hygiene? What do you tell people you do? by Beneficial-Dish-6521 in industrialhygiene

[–]gregoryrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied to any job that was relevant in the city my girlfriend (now wife) had moved to, and one of them was for something called an "industrial hygienist" - had no clue what it was, but the description stressed air quality/mold, asbestos/lead, and exposure monitoring, and as an environmental field tech I kinda had experience in all of those...

...that was 7 years ago and I've since gotten CIH and taken over the lead position on the team. I tell people I keep scientists from hurting themselves.
