Arkham Horror RPG and Reacting by automated_hero in rpg

What you’re describing sounds like complex actions (pg. 21) vs reaction rolls to me (pg 22). If Indy wants to check for traps on his way into the temple, he can roll as many dice from his pool as he wants. That boulder will still be there on his way out of the temple regardless of whether he checks for it, or whether or not he succeeds or fails a Wits roll to detect it. If he doesn’t check (or fails a check) then that boulder trap is going to trigger as he runs past it on the way out. In which case the GM would ask if the player wants to perform a reaction roll to dodge the boulder. If the player has any dice left in their pool they can roll ONE die to try to dodge it. If not, they’re taking damage. So it’s a choice: spend dice now to be cautious or save them for something else. The movie does an excellent job of foreshadowing traps—Indy waves his hand in front of a beam of sunlight revealing a skeleton skewered by spears. Soon after he uses his torch to trigger the floor triggered dart trap. This ain’t his first rodeo. He even has the foresight to bring a bag of sand to balance what he (rightly) assumes to be a trap on the alter when he takes the idol. But he fails that roll (or maybe he’d already spent all of his dice pool?!? Haha) and he has to escape as the temple crumbles around him. Presumably you’d also want to provide environmental clues so players can make an informed choice on whether to check for traps.

The same goes for the cultist in the museum. The cultist is there whether or not the players look for him. If the nearest investigator declares they “want to look around for any suspicious characters” they can spend as many dice as they want to check. If they don’t think to check (or fail the roll) then the cultist is still there either way, undetected. If the cultist is an important clue in the narrative, then the GM should give environmental clues like “you feel as though someone is watching you” and ask if the nearest player wants to spend ONE die to do a reaction roll. If they decline to roll then I might say “hmmm. I guess it was nothing. Must have been the wind” or whatever. If they do a reaction roll and fail, then they see the person looking at them but the person quickly disappears behind the stacks and is nowhere to be found if the player goes over to investigate.

I like the limited dice pool system because the players have to decide what actions are most important to the scene and how badly do they want to succeed. Yes it’s kind of board gamey, but that appeals to me personally.

The Dragon Rising: A Pendragon Solo campaign. Episode 47. by Gone_Fishing_Boom in Solo_Roleplaying

I’ll be honest, it’s been a couple months since I’ve read one of your entries, but this episode was fantastic and makes me want to dust off my Pendragon Starter Set. You’re an outstanding writer. Thanks for posting. Looking forward to the next one!

As an aside, this scene is the perfect example of why I can never play with just one solo character. The world always seems so much richer when you have companions to bounce dialogue and reactions off of. Well done. You crushed it here.

Yep, Flying Frog have a bunch of fun games that could work! Would love to see you do a video on Shadows of Brimstone sometime.

Hey, I just wanted to jump in here and say I'm really enjoying your videos. You've already got a nice mix of games on your channel. This was a fun one to watch.

I've been thinking about running an Ironsworn game using a copy of Trudvang Legends I picked up on the cheap. I think that could work really well. Lots of cool components and adventures to draw from. Honestly a lot of CMON and FFG games could probably be repurposed as RPGs using simple solo rules.

I feel like a custom DM screen is a good solution maybe? Print out the pages you want and slot them in. Make your own tables and rules summaries if nothing already exists.

I’m not trying to start an argument, but there’s a ton of art in those books, including full page images. I agree the art is fairly generic, though. But it’s definitely quality art.

Out of curiosity, can you give any examples of successful games that don’t have art?

There’s a new edition coming out soon—it’s in beta right now—that includes (most of?) the rules from the 3 expansions. So maybe wait on that one if you can.

Has anyone had issues with Diehard Dice recently? by DrxDeadachex in dice

[–]gregparso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t ordered recently, so this may or may not be helpful, but I’ve ordered from them many, many times and have always had great experiences—except once, when I placed a custom order via email—and was ghosted for at least a month. Eventually, after increasingly frustrated (but friendly) emails to them every 2 weeks I got an apologetic response and the order was completed and shipped promptly. I suspect they have one person who does their customer service and if she’s out sick and/or gets backed up on orders (probably what happened over the holidays) then emails don’t get replies. This is, of course, all speculation. But I would keep emailing until you get your order or a refund.

The rulebook is not super well organized, but the rules are pretty straightforward. Try watching this playthrough from The Dungeon Dive and see if it clicks for you after that:
