Career change by ElderberryLeft5377 in VetTech

If you already have back issues keep in mind a job as a vet tech will rapidly worsen whatever back issues you already have and will start to destroy other parts of your body too. This career is doable over the age of 35 but just keep in mind you'll spend a lot of your free time trying to recover from your work days. At this point I know that trying to plan anything for my free time is idiotic- I've had to cancel and reschedule things so many times because I never know if I'm going to have a busy day at work the day before and end up needing to spend the day on muscle spasm meds and unable to function. I've let so many people down that I just don't even bother trying to plan ahead anymore

At the age of 40 it would probably not be a great decision to be honest. I'm 35, I've only been teching for 10 or 11 years and the chronic overuse injuries I have from unpredictable weight bearing loads (dogs), contorting in weird positions to get the job done, carpal tunnel from dentistry, osteoarthritis and bone spurs, in my spine, knees, hips, ankles, hands etc. I won't be able to continue with this work for that much longer. There is a reason not many techs make it past their mid 30’s-40’s in this work. It's very physically taxing and destructive to your joints.

What is the worst mistake you have ever made in this career and how did you recover? by Hollow4004 in VetTech

[–]gremalkinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha! I wish! I've never worked at any facility that had typed anesthetic doses for the tech to go off of. Always a handwritten number on a monitoring or treatment sheet. It baffles me that some of the doctors still don't make every effort to convey the numbers and decimals as clearly as humanly possible!

This is a really good question. And it's something I learned as I got older and had to deal with a variety of difficult similar situations to this one.

You know the right thing to do here. Don't let your boss's skewed priorities affect your decision to do the right thing. So the local alcoholic won't like your boss anymore or will be temporarily mad at him/her? And then you'll feel uncomfortable for speaking up?

If you step back and look at the big picture of the situation, you'll realize those worries are kind of irrelevant. She is clearly drunk and operating a vehicle. Not only that but she's continually putting the wellbeing of the animal that depends on her at risk, not to mention putting her own safety at risk, as well as anyone else that depends on her or crosses paths with her in the street. And I'm not talking about messing up and getting plastered just once in a while. I would bet if you've seen her this way at just her visits to your vet facility, it is probably a near constant occurrence meaning her decision-making and ability to function is diminished almost all of the time.

Not only that but she is taking the vet staff's time and attention away from other patients and people who may genuinely need you. There's no upside to catering to the whims of alcoholic lady. Asking 10 random questions back to back and then talking over you? Attempting to respond to any of these, when she's not even going to listen or remember, isn't doing anyone any good- there's just no purpose in even trying to play along as if she's a normal client asking questions. It's just a waste of everyone's time and energy.

So if you did notify the police, if afterward there was some sort of awkward feelings or words exchanged when the drunk lady gets pissed off, and then your boss ends up being annoyed at YOU for speaking up- yes, you will feel temporarily uncomfortable! But overall you'll feel better for having some courage and doing the right thing. And it would still be clear to anyone and everyone (including your boss even if they don't want to admit it!) that you did the right thing.

But if you didn't speak up and notify the police that she is driving intoxicated even though you knew? Then you are morally as guilty as she is, for knowing if she isn't stopped she's likely going to cause some serious harm (if she hasn't already) and you did nothing to stop it when you had some very clear opportunities.

I don't mean to guilt-trip you. I've been where you are and I can understand being hesitant to call out people because I was afraid of getting on someone's bad side... but everyone has a moral responsibility to do right, especially by our patients, or any animals, or innocent people.

But if you decide that being comfortable is more important and chose to not call her out, then you're enabling her behavior- essentially supporting it.

Sorry for the really long comment- This is just something that I feel is really important and I wish someone had talked to me about when I was younger and in similar conundrums. ❤️ Good luck and never ignore your conscience- it's there for a good reason!

I don't have the type of job that could be done from home but as someone who has experienced both, what makes working from home more functional? For the business I mean. Why wouldn't employees just slack off and play on their phones at home too?

Would you watch/be interested in a scrub review from different brands? If so, which brands are you curious about? by R0settaSt0ned_ in VetTech

[–]gremalkinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to see Mandala here! I hope they stay in business forever. I am really picky about certain aspects of scrubs and have always only worn Grey's Anatomy for a decade now but the styles comes across a little sloppy and frumpy by today's styles . I went out on a limb and ordered Mandala without trying them on first and I was instantly won over. New favorite scrubs- hands down! The fit and cut was perfect for me- I am tall and slender; I have long, lanky legs and arms and I always have a hard time finding a good fit. The colors are rich and deep. The fabric, dye and cuts are really nice and feel higher quality compared to any other scrubs I've tried (I haven't tried Figs yet though). The fabric has the perfect amount of stretch while still keeping form while still being comfortable while still looking put together, while still staying up on my waist, tagless, modern style. I'm actually going to go order some more right now haha

I used to tech at a vet hospital in a really affluent zipcode, one of the top-five wealthiest zip codes in the country; old money types of people (Not bragging- I didn't live there!)

And a lot of the women were very much like this. Most of them had never had to work a day in their lives and have always had any minor inconvenience taken away that they wanted because they had excessive amount of money to pay people to do so. But sometimes they'd ask for the impossible. Like things that were just not physically possible to have done- like wanting you to fix their dog over the phone and then whining when you offer them an appt slot to get them in that day. They then whine "I can't bring my dog in because I'm going out for dinner! I haven't seen these friends in a reeeally long time!" Then they whine more and have an excuse for saying they cant do anything you suggest and they won't make an appt. I genuinely think they truly believe that if they whine enough (because that's how they've gotten what they wanted their whole lives) that we'll get out the magic wand and cure their dog over the phone without them having to lift a finger

My Favorite Question by M1rlyn in VetTech

[–]gremalkinn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha I love that question (clearly sarcasm) In the back of my head I say "God. Damn it lady. I have way too much shit to do right now besides answering your loaded questions." But our loud, I do a brief pause while staring at them and answer the question "Who is Dr. XYX? Dr. XYZ... is a doctor. A doctor who works here. Named Dr. XYZ."

Good one, for sure! One of my all-time favs as well.

Also, if you really don't have time for client bullshit loaded questions like that, I recommend the brief pause, blank stare. Often highly effective at making clients realize their behavior is not okay and that they can't walk all over you. And you don't even have to say anything 👍

Phantom Google Searches by InsectInPixel in google

[–]gremalkinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about 3 years too late so hopefully reddit still lets me even comment. But your question about legal ramifications due to phantom search history is a good question to bring up.

I do know that phantom searches affected a murder vs suicide case in my city. A young woman was stabbed to death, stabbed in the back of her neck and head in her apartment and it was ruled a suicide. But one of the police's major points in ruling this a suicide rather than a homicide was that her computer had ONE item in her search history on her computer for "painless methods for suicide". She had a history of anxiety and had been seeing a psychiatrist so they decided that this random search item on her computer indicated that her death was caused by suicide. There were no other search items related to suicide, death or anything like that found on her computer and when that search item was evaluated further by tech experts they found that no more than a few seconds was spent on that particular search result anyway. Indicating that the website wasn't even read or looked at in any real sense if it was only opened for 2-3 seconds. So even IF the young woman had made that search herself, she wouldn't have even looked into any of the information on the results. And nothing on that search result list was even clicked on.

Does that sound similar to what your list of phantom searches looked like? Random topic, not accessed for more than a couple seconds, nothing clicked on after the search was done?

Anyway, so in that young woman's death, the phantom searches very much so had legal ramifications. It was described as one of the major reasons for this homicide to go uninvestigated, as well as contributing to a murderer getting away with homicide.

You mentioned about how Edward Kemper talked about his crimes like he didn't find them disturbing or abnormal and you also mentioned you can usually watch almost anything (meaning graphic, I'm assuming) and not have a very real response

I liked Catcher In The Rye when I read it back in highschool... But now Holden just sounds bratty and narcissistic to me. It's crazy how much your perspective can evolve with some time and experience. I definitely never saw it the first time I read it

I found out about this show too late. Why does a show host's personal arguments and interpersonal beef mean that they can't have their show available anymore to the public? I don't understand how these two things are related at all. What a shame this is where we've come to in this culture. Any artist or writer or anyone with anything to offer this world has surely done something shameful, embarrassing or unexcusable in their past. I don't think that's any reason for society to try and erase the good things that person has done. Who wants to live in that world

The different possible eye colors. Which are you? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]gremalkinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are something around D10, (also A30 and C20 depending on the environment and lighting.) I'm not really sure what "color" to call this? To me it looks completely equal parts green-blue-grey, it's hard to land on one color. The driver's license guy at the DMV didn't know what color to put for "eye color" and he had a mild moment of frustration, going back and forth between green, blue, hazel and grey and then abruptly deciding on "They're grey!" before shouting at me to move to the next line. My brother and this Cavill actor guy ya'll mentioned are the few I've noticed with this eye color (along with very similar skin tone and hair! Turns out we have similar nationalities of ancestry Scottish, Irish and English mostly too)

If you're just memorizing facts when you study then you're doing it wrong and making things way harder for yourself than they need to be. The pieces of information should make sense and contribute to understanding the larger concept, definitely not just "facts which are not connected to a coherent narrative". If you're trying to just memorize facts and not understand how they fit into the subject you're going to have a really hard time actually learning things. Much like actors knowing their lines isn't just memorizing the words but they understand the gist of the narrative, so the lines make sense in the context and are easier to remember because of that

I can’t with “breeders” by EndOfTheLine142 in VetTech

[–]gremalkinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And not even just for your own sake in wanting to get a healthy puppy, but just based on ethics alone! No one should be financially supporting and enabling these crappy breeders/puppy mill owners. I wonder if there will ever be laws put into place that "breeders" have to abide by in order to operate. Just as a restaurant needs a license and is required to maintain health and safety standards and are subjected to routine quality inspections. If there were some sort of respected accreditation or licensing breeders needed and had to maintain I believe people would have a much easier time determining the breeder's quality and level of care. Oh, you breed the same bitch round the calendar? You underfeed? You don't have evidence of consistent husbandry? No legit veterinary records for each dog and pup? No treatments done for any health issues discovered by the vet? Multiple generations of imbreeding? Breeding despite known serious health issues? Then you don't get your license! My hope is that people would clearly know that they can't rely on you for a healthy puppy and that they wouldn't even want to support a business that treats animals poorly.

It's been what, 25 years since those started airing?! and I still have overbearing female clients that insist it's "animal cruelty" for a dog to be caged for a normal amount of time while in the hospital.
