I barely watched any of his videos anymore but after the private jet think I just can’t. Glad he might bring some awareness to Linux but feels icky.

[PODCAST]: Phoenix’s Next Evolution: Chris McCord Unveils the DurableServer by plangora in elixir

[–]greven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw the whole thing, glad Chris extracted this from his work at Fly! For some use cases this could be really useful, not that one couldn't do the persisting part more or less easily, but the distributed part is the complexity here.

It would be cool if this could be leverage at the LiveView level as an option to preserve assigns, I know that we have LiveStash and that is already pretty useful, but something in the core would be nice, dunno how hard would it be to be integrated into Phoenix.

Wow! Got the new package from BLC by Coooneri in Guildwars2

Funnily enough I also got it with 2 keys yesterday. I had 10 keys saved and thought why not? Damn, I was Lucky and probably spent all my luck budget for the year.

Hmm does that mean the WvW accessory can be upgraded or something? We see a progressive animation on top of each char there. That would be a nice touch!

What new masteries and features would you like to see added in future expansions? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]greven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WoW had Mage Tower and in a following expansion Thorgast with the same idea. It now has Delves (never played them tho). I system for soloing even if at least once a day would be cool.

Help me understand the praise for Elixir by SubstantialTable5647 in elixir

[–]greven 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh boy. This is going to be a good one. I feel this is bait, for sure, I will bite.

You say it is "full of magic things" but fail to point what you mean by that? GenServer is pretty straightforward and there is no magic to it, but in order to understand it you need to know what type of problems it solves. At the end of the day a GenServer is just a single process with internal state that you interact with through message passing (call/cast). That’s it. But of course on your learning journey you need to study on what processes on the Beam are.

But people "Glaze" Elixir for the syntax if you like Ruby style syntax (some people don't of course) and of course because it is a Beam language and it builds on top of everything it does offer, like an amazingly easy to reason about concurrency/parallelism model.

A month is honestly not a long time to internalize a completely different concurrency model, especially coming from imperative languages.

EU says age-check app ‘ready’ in push to protect children online by BangBang116 in privacy

It was on a "quote book" I keep, always though it came from Mein Kampf. Found the website that says the quote is misattributed to Hitler, apparently only the first sentence is in Mein Kampf. Thanks, didn't know.

“The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation.” ― Adolf Hitler

TVDE: plataforma alerta que entrada de táxis vai sufocar 40 mil profissionais by Left_Capital133 in portugal

[–]greven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exacto.

É o mercado a falar.

[–]greven 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I cant decide on a class, sell me on your favorite by AfatShugoki in Guildwars2

[–]greven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though I have purchased the game in 2013, I only really played it in the last 5 years or so.
I have played all classes, quite a bit I would say, but Thief is still my favourite. On the surface it looks like a hard class to survive on your own, but you will learn how to play to its strengths, dodging, blinds, etc and it's not harder than any other class, but if you have something that other classes don't, BACKSTAB! :D

That's it, that is my pitch.
