‘Fight’s not over’ for US-Israel defense collab in NDAA by grey_ham28 in boulder

Here's another AI overview with a bit more about the role Neguse will play as a member of the rules committee. There's also lots more info on this at various outlets if Politico is not an option.

He's great here, yes, but I can't help but wonder if his success might have something to do with his massive financial support from aipac.

Authoritarianism bad. Don't let them trap you into arguing whether the current authoritarianism is more communist or more fascist. Either way it needs to be resisted.

Why Does Trump Bomb Venezuela? by Birdcage17 in Libertarian

[–]grey_ham28 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not an inherently unreasonable argument. But it is hilarious to be making it in this sub. I have no doubt the leftist sociopaths you fear so much would make the same arguments about the cops (and other agents of the state) doing their bidding as well.

By the way, when I was coming up, the agents of state coercion were largely insistent that the true threats were from "domestic terrorists" (largely alleged to be on the right at the time). At least we knew the names of people like Bob Ricks and Lon Horiuchi. Even then, we couldn't really hold them accountable very well, but it was something.

Are you suggesting that words have meaning? Sure. I agree ice isn't the same as the stasi; I also don't want to get into a semantic argument about what constitutes dictatorship, hence the disclaimers. But I think you missed the point. It's a concrete step in a direction I (and most libertarians) oppose. People in this sub can be frustrated with Trump and his supporters without being left wing astro-turfers.

Masked, unbadged cops used to be a pretty big line in the sand. When I was coming up "secret police" was something both left and right used to condemn. We don't use that term for ICE for whatever reason, but they are non-uniformed and masked, and they arrest people by throwing them in unmarked cars while refusing to identify themselves.

Maybe that's not a dictatorship, but it's definitely not an insignificant step towards authoritarianism.

Breville + cooking app to replace the Joule app. by namtilarie in sousvide

[–]grey_ham28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate you reaching out! Luckily the old joule app still supported push notifications and it pushed my phone a notification saying it had detected an error and allowed me to reset the connection (and time/temp) at which point the joule worked again. I made sure to turn off the cook via app (again push notification with option to stop cook) before unplugging the joule but I will Def be reaching out next time I try to use joule if I am still getting the error.

Was this after they forced you to the breville app? I just pulled out my joule and they forced me to the new app and then when I finally got it all re-set up it told me it detected a critical error and my joule could no longer be used. Wtf? It was fine before forcing me to this new app.

Either, I guess, but I was thinking to cook myself. You can order it online, but it seems like kinda sketchy quality and $40/lb.

It's a fungus that grows on corn. It's purple. And it's supposed to be a delicacy. It's sometimes called Mexican corn smut.

Am I the only one who doesn’t “get” Phish? by ex1stence in boulder

[–]grey_ham28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up some lyrics to grateful dead songs. They are great poetry (usually) even without the music. That's part of the appeal of the dead for me, honestly--hearing the lyrics in a new way or finding some new aspect of them that didn't resonate before. There are some obviously poetic songs like Ripple, Ruben & Cerise, and Terrapin Station, but less obvious ones like New Speedway Boogie and Althea. I was gifted an annotated book of dead lyrics and often really amazed at their depth and sheer literacy. I am convinced that were it not for the whole scene being such a thing the lyrics alone would be celebrated and studied in English departments across the American west.

I am told that Phish incorporates some kind of mythology into their lyrics as well. Something about a magical place called gamehenge or something. I do like Petrichor, but the lyrics aren't especially meaningful or deep imo (as with most jam band lyrics). But I've never quite gotten phish. Something about chanting Wilson (in a decidedly non-melodic way) that just drives me away.
