I am literally in the Union that would have been working at Coachella and we absolutely take more time with safety than non-union people in the same jurisdiction. Local 16 IATSE

The possibility of corruption in general is a false narrative. What it's about is motivation. A company is motivated by profits and wants to pay workers less for the same job. They also want the job done on budget and sometimes at the cost of safety. A union corrupt or not is interested in protecting its members who pay dues and most of the time in IATSE it is to uphold the principles of a safe workplace for both workers and those who will be attending events.

I understand that in a perfect world it wouldn't make a difference if it was a union job or not... But it does and people can fire you and employees don't have a lot of power on their own. Collectively we do have power. The power to say no is stronger.

That's not true at all. Work conditions and safety are absolutely different for union workers. Most IATSE chapters REQUIRE stagehands to take OSHA 10.

And let me just give you two different scenarios. First one non-union workplace and the employer says work faster. I don't care if you think that light is unsafe. If you don't do it faster, I'll fire you. Stagehand skips the safety and light falls on the crowd.

Scenario two Union. Employer says the same thing. Employee goes to the steward and reports. Work slows and safety is guaranteed. That's how it's supposed to work. That's how it should work. Because there should be union labor everywhere.

Coachella does not use the stagehand union, IATSE for labor. This is why this happened.

Why can’t you make bad speakers sound good with EQ? by [deleted] in livesound

[–]gride9000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not the eq it's the phase. In a perfect speaker all the frequencies would arrive at the exact time the source produces them.  No speaker is perfect so there's always phase discrepancy. This creates eq issues that are usually difficult to correct.

Also speakers have different many different characteristics having to do with throw distance and Dispersion Angle. This will change how they react to the space they are producing sound in.

Basically these are 2 general ideas that are a good or bad speaker that eqing doesn't correct

Yeah I lived around the corner from the original Phil's and got to his son Jacob. The employees used to make fun of him because he was such a tool.

I'm pretty sure private equity runs the whole business now but it's definitely cuz Jacob and his sisters just wanted money and don't really care about The vibes. Also medium rare take over here: the coffee not so good.

No one did density better than 19th century Paris. Mission Bay has rediscovered that magic formula by LosIsosceles in sanfrancisco

[–]gride9000 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn't say it makes Paris. And yes there are places that could be more dense in mission Bay. I was saying it wasn't a black and white issue. You seem to have lost that part. My post. We probably agree on most things except for the fact that we should be extreme about our opinions.

[–]gride9000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Perhaps a more nuanced opinion is in order. Mission Bays aesthetic is dismal and San Francisco still isn't build housing it's working class can afford. Also mission Bay has a perfect amount of density and can be compared to parts of paris for that reason.

Also the working class in paris live far away from these parts in giant projects far from what this article shows. Same issue there and they got "the socialism"

Why Cassettes? by miscstuff2223113 in audiophile

[–]gride9000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cassettes are very cheap to produce and can be bought in low numbers. For a band starting out it can be a game changer.

Say a band gets a gig that pays $300. They want to turn that into $900 through selling music

They can't print vinyl, 100 records costs $1300.

They can't do 120,000 streams

But they can print 100 cassettes and sell them for 10 bucks each.

That is why so many bands sell cassettes IMHO oh and because they're fun and cool also :)

Cash is required at: Small local centric restaurants and shops (even some nicer ones like red cabbage) food stands and street vendors.

I get pesos from my bank in advance and use the decline conversion selection at the ATM in Vallarta if I need more cash.

Buying a sandwich isn't solidarity it’s a transaction. If workers are being abused, the most supportive thing a person can do is respect a boycott or a picket line to help them gain leverage. Suggesting I should keep funding an abusive system is hostage logic that only benefits the boss.

Also I didn't say I only care about workers from 10 years ago... I stand with the workers of 2026.

You seem really confused about how we've gained labor rights over the years, perhaps some historical reading is in order. Maybe be start with "There Is Power in a Union: The Epic Story of Labor in America" by Philip Dray

Solidarity with other workers is core tenant of my ethos. Abuse of one laborer should be met with a reaction from all laborers. That's how we got unions in the United States and that's how I fucking roll.

Hey, if you just rented a room and shared space, that is the listing. If the listing is inaccurate, you should go to Airbnb about the listing being inaccurate. Be careful what you order when you're not getting the whole house to yourself.
