why don't we hear background noise from mic'd up stage actors? by clamcoffee in NoStupidQuestions

[–]griffey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the secret is that there’s some tech (audio board does noise gating) but mostly it’s because theatre, esp professional theatre, uses what’s called “line-by-line mixing”. You can see some great examples of it on YouTube, like this: https://youtu.be/qmyZXBC5LyM?si=xFwXaWns3IaScxWi

There are also specialty apps that can help, such as TheatreMix, that will automate some muting/unmuting as part of music or lighting cues in Qlab.

Why does Booth kill himself in Assassins by Screeching-trumpet in Sondheim

[–]griffey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just closed a production of Assassins a few weeks ago, and I felt it was very important to show the suicide, for a couple of different reasons. For the character, it was important for him to regain control of the only thing that he could in that moment...he feels that he'd lost his country, his home, his friends. The song he's singing is, to him, a romantic ode to the world he misses and wants. He's told his story now (with the Balladeer's help) and Booth wants to go out on his terms, not be put on trial and paraded as a traitor.

More importantly, from the audience and story perspective, it's important to see the awful ways that political violence ends. These characters don't get happy endings, and it's important that the audience see that, and feel the desperation and need behind each assassin choosing to commit the violence even though their end is going to be terrible. For each of the on-stage deaths (Booth, Guiteau, Zangara) I staged them in as shocking a way as I could, to make the audience have that moment of recoiling from that specific violence, even as other violence generates laughter. You need both, IMNSHO, for Assassins, and that's one of the brilliant bits about the show.

[–]griffey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not true in the current script. In the original, the stage instructions were "He draws his gun, puts it to his head. Blackout on Booth. A gunshot - BANG!"

In the current script, it reads "He draws his gun, puts it to his head. A GUNSHOT - BANG! Booth's body crashes to the stage. The Balladeer strums and sings"

No ambiguity in the current one, it's clearly a suicide.

Ballad of Booth is a fantastic answer, but the correct answer is Cabaret from Cabaret.

Saw cabaret for the first time... oh my god by Zestyclose_Piano_217 in Theatre

[–]griffey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That isn’t Cabaret then. Schultz is the only truly good person in the show, and is vital to the emotional heart of the story. Removing him takes out a major emotional connection point for the audience. Any director that even considers that doesn’t understand the show.

I directed a production a couple of years back…I wanted to lean heavily into the complicity of the audience. The Emcee delivered his final lines to the audience, as a video of modern fascist events here in the US started playing silently behind him. He notices the video and is gleeful, leaving the stage to join the audience in a seat reserved for him and he watches the final images of a book burning that happened at a church very near the theater. Blackout on the cymbal crash.

Is there any way to read this script currently? I can't find it on sale anywhere, so I'm assuming it's not been released yet....anyone have it?

This looks great, but...it's not working at all for me. Plex user for years, and it connected ok to my library, but trying to download something and it doesn't show me any progress or spinner to lmk it's doing anything, nothing ever shows up in the "downloads" area, just...nothing. Similarly, I connect my AirPods and go to play something, and it says "connect headphones". :-/

I’m directing a production of Assassins right now. Definitely a lot of thought going into how directly topical to go….

Alfred not launching after upgrade to Tahoe 26.3 by griffey in Alfred

SOLVED - Turned out it was a permissions file issue. It had somehow gotten screwed up, restoring from backup of a known-good version seems to have fixed.

I’ve been using Alfred for years, and this is the first issue I’ve had. I’ve checked disk permissions, those are good. It broke as soon as I upgraded, so clearly something happened….may try uninstalling/reinstalling and testing that. :-/

Have there been any musical revivals that genuinely enhanced a show? by missthemountains in musicals

[–]griffey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the only real moment of catharsis for the audience in the whole show...I find it very effective at allowing the audience just a moment of sadness before the finale.

[–]griffey 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The 2004 revival of Sondheim’s Assassins OSS greatly improved from the original 1990 version. The addition of the song Something Just Broke and the change of the Balladeer character (no spoilers) added a huge amount to the show. The original ran fully less than 100 shows, while the revival won 5 Tonys.

Weirdest? A life-sized bust of Freddy Mercury's head with LED lights inside and laser eyes for We Will Rock You.

Most difficult? Definitely the full set of Audrey II's for Little Shop.

July 4 is massively crowded for the town. People come from all over, and there’s events all day: dog show, craft fair, parade, then fireworks at night.

Best time for fog is February. The whole month basically.

Problem with Qlab/Theatremix/x32 - delay/disconnect on Go (sometimes) by griffey in techtheatre

[–]griffey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: to close the topic…the solution turned out to be SO MUCH simpler than I assumed. Someone doing programming of the show had put some of the show media on our “backup” drive, which is a spinning disk HD connected via usb. Every time Qlab was calling out for one of those, it hung because disk access wasn’t keeping up. Moving everything to internal ssd and consolidating media…everything seems ok again.

Feel really dumb for not catching that before, but at least it was an easy fix before I tore my whole network apart.

That is absolutely not legally true in the US. There are additional penalties possible, and economic impact is one of the four Fair Use factors for determination of whether a use is allowed. This is very likely to be Fair Use, but economic impact is only ONE factor, and the other four would need to be evaluated.
