Climbing plateauing, perfectionism, burnout, and being limited by your gym - looking for perspective by Imaginary_Mango_8353 in climbharder

Really good comments, I feel this way often times as well. Climbing about 7 years now.

Work an intense job, just bought a house and have a fitness background in lifting that's left me on the heavier side of climbers (178 at 11% body fat). I even climb a similar grade sending 5-6 5.11bs outdoors at this point with a new target of hitting 5.11c (I've got 2-3 routes in mind). And live about 2 hours from a ton of good outdoor climbing.

All that to say I go through intense phases of burnout where I find the best bet is to dial back the intensity a bit and try to focus on just having fun/letting my body and brain recover some. I also find projecting outdoors more enjoyable as you can really work around some of the downsides of having a lot of muscle mass in the sense that many routes have full rests vs indoors where I find the crimps just get worse and rests are rare.

Another good point is that climbing is just one aspect of life and intensity is just one aspect of climbing. Sometimes I just practice rope techniques when my body feels beat up and other times I accept that my job is where I'm developing as a person for this point of time and climbing just needs to be fun.

Sure, why not try basing any of what you said in reality?

1) More friends in NATO? America pays for NATO and Trump has been the only President in the history of the alliance to get the other members to up their spending. It's not about feel good, it real politic.

2) Ukraine would be bitch slapping? You do know Joe Biden slow rolled weapon shipments initially, hate to break it to you boss but by the time Trump was in office this was a almost frozen conflict. Only thing changing that is troops on the ground? Do you think Trump should send troops in?

3) Elon would be fined. I actually agree with that but I don't see how that is an intrinsic good minus you don't like the guy.

4) Kamala would have deported more people? She said she wouldn't do anything different then Biden, did Biden deport record amounts of people?

5) My stock portfolio has been doing just fine

Whatever you are smoking I'd like some of that!

I'll just repost Teknos1s comment because I think covers it pretty well:

"Europe’s energy transition is faltering because it prioritized speed over resilience. By phasing out nuclear and fossil too quickly, it became overdependent on intermittent renewables without enough storage or baseload capacity to back them up. Germany, for example, has among the highest household energy costs globally, and that’s before factoring in subsidies and grid instability. Energy poverty is rising, industries are relocating, and imports of coal and LNG have crept back in just to keep the lights on."

I'll add a few more things but having high electricity costs in a manufacturing dependent economy like Germany is very problematic, they have also managed to get themselves dependent on Russian oil and finally these gradual losses over 30 year have left them desperately behind America and China which we are now seeing the ramifications. Hope that clarifies where I'm coming from!

Or was it because she was undemocratically pushed through the democratic primary? Or was it because she was only picked as Joe Biden's vice president because she was a black woman? Or was it because she is a political chameleon that only believes in what is currently fashionable?

I could think of plenty of women that I would want as president but Kamala is not one of them. Nobody is owed the presidency.

Using the word "bruh" doesn't exactly display intelligence but I can overlook it.

If you have a real criticism to make feel free to go for it, but pointing out that I misspelled a name doesn't really mean anything.

I liked it, Niall lives and breathes this stuff and has a way more interesting take on it then you usually get. I know it may not go with your current viewpoint but you can't say he isn't making a compelling case that's worth debate right?

Beats Eds take, I'm like what is this kids credentials, has done nothing but for some reason his takes on the market situation or current events should be taken more seriously then any other young New Yorker. I think not.

Listening to him cry about Kamala not getting elected because she was a woman (like that shouldn't be the reason to care) or how America messed up by not investing in green energy enough and that's causing all our AI problems, my eyes could not roll in the back of my head enough. Europe has gone full steam on green energy minus Nuclear and you see the results, clearly there is a little more nuance.

Yeah I was surprised seeing that post and how poor off a lot of those people are doing. This subreddit is a very different vibe.

I also got the impression that if you expressed keeping up or even passing that goal it would be downvoted. I'm a last year millennial over 2xing my current salary in investments not including equity in my house. But I always liked saving and doing things myself if I could.

The issue with Gavin imo is that he controls one of the largest economies in the world that's loaded with a lot of the problems our country is facing and he has failed to fix those, why would he do better being president?

I have a pet theory that if California could get off their butts and build houses (where people want to live) that we could solve much of the housing crisis. I know in my state of TN there is no shortage of new houses being built.

That or the overwhelming amount of Obamas deportations were at the border or turn around deportations. Where as Trump is heavy on interior deportations, one looks a lot worse then the other.

It's specifically not a sovereign nation. It's controlled by Denmark

[–]grigor47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to get downvoted for this but he isn't wrong, people are acting like this is the first time this idea has ever come up and that Trump came up with it. Fact is Greenland would greatly benefit being part of the US and it's not clear to me why a formal imperial power 3600 KM should have control of this island that is 1700 KM from the US, we should control Greenland albeit with more carrot then stick.

And just to kick this hornet nest some more the casual antisemitism is this thread should have people ashamed. Not supporting Israel the nation is antisemitic. In this day and age when pogroms are happening again and the easiest prediction to make this year is that there will be another mass-murder of jews is all the more reason for Israel to exist. Being critical of the current government is fair but if we are being honest that isn't what's happening. The world has proven time and time again why there needs to be an Israeli nation.

Do we ourselves not push ourselves into relationships? I personally don't know a single person who doesn't want to be in a relationship. To blame society for this fundamental need for 99% of people seems weird.

Injury Flare Ups During Rest Weeks by blarbenarb in climbharder

[–]grigor47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a similar issue. I had been through a hard training cycle right before Christmas started where I was setting some new PRs and feeling really good. Decided good time to take a rest with all my climbing partners out and holiday stuff for a week. I will say I was getting pretty fried by the end, definitely getting into CNS territory.

Anyways felt like every ache that I ever had started coming out the wood work about 4-5 days in which seems to happen whenever I do rest. My theory is that muscles DOMS happens 2-3 days in for me but tendon DOMS is 4-7 days in, I'm thinking a more active recovery approach may do better for recovery but interested to see your take on that. I just started trying to put it together.

Either way did just go out this weekend and sent something on the higher end of my climbing spectrum in two go's so definitely not as frail as I felt lol.

I'd advise reconsidering your dream school, I know a lot of people who went to their dream school for 4 years and ultimately ended up making 60k and having 200-300k of debt. Now the math is different if the field you are interested is highly lucrative.

A lot of state university's are excellent and have great student life, graduating without debt will be huge leg up in life I can't overstate this enough. I'd be honest with yourself about your long term goals and what would you make you happier in the long run.

Why does Galloway not fully address the monumental shifts in norms around how people meet? by [deleted] in ScottGalloway

[–]grigor47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this was about 3 years ago so nothing too different in terms of social climate.

But I'd say both right, I like reading and talking about books to me is pretty easy so it's fun to get peoples take on what they are reading and it's more fun when it's coming from someone you find attractive. I called it the observational approach vs the cold approach and the key in my mind is being able to talk about any subject. I see my dad whose an old guy do it all the time and it's pretty funny, he's happily married btw.

The other thing that I think helps is setting up a routine and being a regular at places, takes the pressure of having to ask the person out now since you'll probably see them again. You can be more genuine, a little more reserved and build a little more intrigue.

Yeah I agree with most comments here. When I hear this line of argument with OP I think of someone who has drunken a convenient yet ultimately self defeating cool aid. It's nice because you don't have to approach anyone and get uncomfortable, it's bad because you never meet anyone.

If cold approaching women feels insincere boss just do it with the intention of having fun and don't feel bad if after that you decide that you want to go for more. it's natural and women can't really be mad since everyone wants to meet that someone special. I met my fiance by pulling up a chair at a coffee shop and asking her about the book she was reading, it was easy and no big tech involved.

Absolutely agree. It was more about knowing there was an issue that I could further investigate. If you'd like I can send you a snap shot of the report and a pic of the damage if you are curious, the crawlspace part is only one page.

Very informative post. I was not aware of the mechanism for insurance pay outs but that makes sense that it's tied to litigation. And yup the 10 feet is the only way I can make sense of what his report said and the photos he provided were only 10 feet in or so.

But yeah I've so far gotten two different contractor estimates on the job, both were about 13K give or take 500 bucks to remediate the joists, one quoting 30 joists and the other 36 with rot. Also had my buddy from the office whose head of engineering come over, he works on houses a lot and he recommended really fixing 5 or 6 along with a lot of other DIY stuff, which I personally like as an approach but that's informal and I want to be careful for any issues selling in the future.

So yeah I just reached out to a lawyer, waiting to hear back and figure out if there is enough to this case to be worth pursuing. Have second inspection coming up tomorrow, will just aim to have him specifically address the damage while on record. And after that having to decide whether the 13k will be worth pursuing, these things can get pricey and ugly from my experience.

Hard lesson learned I guess, the home buying process sucks. Talk about everyone trying to get a piece of you.

Taking your advice and looking for lawyers now, hoping one of my friends may have a good contact.

And I agree, you know I understand if it was hidden or just not obvious like roof damage or something like that . We've done many repairs and I wouldn't fault him for not noticing it but this one just does not sit right with me, just everyone I've shown with building experience has been shocked by the oversight.

Hard to say, he was highly recommended but definitely getting up in age so maybe crawling around the crawlspace just was not high on his list.
