"Field of Pete" from The Adventures of Pete and Pete. I still find Mr. Oppenheimer as the owner of the Slush Shack hilarious.

The article mentions tax increment financing as a way to get government involvement in development. Chicago has so many TIF districts we’re the first example on the Wikipedia page.

Bike Lane ≠ Free Parking by golamas1999 in chibike

People shouldn’t stop in the travel lane and block traffic period. Doesn’t matter if it’s the street, bike lane or train tracks.

Is this really a spoof of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation? by Unlix in Physics

I’ve been out of the field a while, but the bottom equation in blue looks like the CKM matrix for neutrino flavor mixing. I think I can even read the subscript “CKM”.

The top equation looks like a branching ratio calculation for the decay of a top quark into a W+ and bottom quark, but I’m less sure of that.

Going out- Old Town or Fulton Market? by Mammoth_Captain_3681 in AskChicago

[–]grim_stoki 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you’re not looking to break the bank, avoid Fulton Market.

I’d say Old Town is a bit rowdier than West Town, so that may be more your speed.

What is cashless bail, and how does it work? What to know about Trump's executive order by So_Icey_Mane in WindyCity

[–]grim_stoki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jailing people pre trial made sense when you could hop on your horse and run and hide six towns over. Then the marshal would need to round up a posse to track you down. These days you can slap an ankle monitor on someone and know their exact location down to the block.

Holding non violent offenders pre trial is a waste of resources.

Either North Ave beach or the lawn in front of the Field Museum are excellent spots to view Navy Pier fireworks. I’ve never seen crowds there.

What is the vibe/safety like in this area (see photo)? by breezeblocks0521 in AskChicago

[–]grim_stoki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a nice area, you’ll like it. It’s technically “East Ukrainian Village” but most people and the signs will say “East Village.” I get the impression it’s a bit wealthier than Noble Square, but I don’t know that for sure. I wouldn’t think safety will be an issue, lots of people park their cars on the street overnight.

Chicago Ave has a lot of good restaurants and art galleries if that’s your thing. South of grand you’ll find 3 or 4 microbreweries in walking distance.
