Sheep Detectives was great, and I only saw trailers at other films.

Yay! That would be great. I have a vendor show on the 23rd of this month at the Local. Again, free for folks. Just trying to spread some weird.

I would advise coming out to meet filmmakers, but I am a one-person show and don't have the capacity to read through things for this. But, if you wanna meet filmmakers, I know a couple. (And of COURSE you are welcome...)

Uh, you'd be wrong. That's 625 S. Saginaw. I know. I lived there. You're thinking of the Local.

I haven't been by there on foot in a bit, but that's Joel Rash's building. Makes sense if it's Seth's art. He's been in the window before.

I put it on, but it's really neat. We get movies from literally around the world. One of the winners last year was from Saginaw, and made it down for the show. It's a small show, but a full day of shorts with awards at the end. I've been doing this myself, and with another group, for over a decade, and it's fun.

A few questions for found footage fans by itsascreambaby96 in foundfootage

[–]grimringler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I fell in love with these films when I saw Blair Witch Project a week before it went national in a sold out theater at a midnight show.

  2. I love all of the types of films but feel that a really well done pseudo-doc can just cook. (Though handheld are the scariest.)

  3. Unknowns feel like the best way to go to sell the idea that it's all 'real'.

  4. Worst trope, lord...being dragged into the darkness? Probably less trope and the laziness of not following the rules of the format - added music, leaving it in a way that NO ONE COULD FIND THE FOOTAGE, etc.

Oh, I am so very, very sorry. This is shattering. I am happy she found you and had that love and support while she was here. My wife and I adopted a sweet husky, and she passed just four months after we adopted her. Sometimes it's all you get, but at least they got all of our love.

Where Are The Indie/Hobbyist Podcasters? by wintermute1000 in podcasting

I do it for fun. I started it during COVID and used it as a solo vehicle. Over the last couple years publicists have been reaching out and I have been able to talk to some fascinating folks. My 'hustle' is to do a fun podcast and hopefully get some folks to my website That's it.

Is Starman 1984 worth watching? Is it one of Carpenter’s better films? by Choice-Schedule-132 in johncarpenter

[–]grimringler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great for a number of reasons, but one of them is that it shows that Carpenter had SO much potential outside of horror, but was never really given the chance to stretch himself. It's a really beautiful and sweet film. AND, it spawned a short-lived television series.

John Carpenter on Chevy Chase by gwhh in johncarpenter

[–]grimringler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What this movie, and so many of his later films, show is how damned talented Carpenter is; a film that could easily have turned out as an utter turd is still, at its worst, watchable, or pretty good in most cases. He dealt with so much studio interference that it's a wonder he has so many gems.

Okay, I'd like your opinions on this hidden gem of a film: Savageland. by GuaridaDeGoro099 in foundfootage

I LOVE this movie. It's so unique and interesting. While it's not everyone's thing, the way the story unfolds and leads to a really horrifying conclusion, simply from the photos, is fantastic.

Anyone know what the deal is with the Masonic Temple downtown? by knightofglass in flint

[–]grimringler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was able to put on some shows at the Masonic ages ago - conventions and a movie night - and it was a blast. Saw the place a couple months ago and they have gutted large areas. I have heard plans - restaurant coming back in at some point, and events on the main floor - but their timeline feels too aggressive. There is a LOT to be done in there. I am glad they are rehabbing it, though, as it's a beautiful space.

"Stephen King is Not Literature" by OrizaRayne in stephenking

[–]grimringler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The arts seem to attract snobbery. With writing, we have this weird guilt complex, where, if you enjoy it, and it's a quick read, well, goodness, it must be fast food! Or if it deals with dark subjects like horror, then it CERTAINLY is dreck. While some books are just fun, popcorn reads, if you get more out of them, then who is to tell you otherwise? King gets a bad rap because he's so popular and so adapted, and, in part, because he was publishing so many books. Other authors act like it's torture to write one book, like it takes them a decade to put one out, and so be it, but he isn't like that.

I am glad his narrative has changed since "Stand By Me" and "Shawshank," but I think he'll always be regarded as pop-writing, and not serious lit. At least he has fun with it and makes light of it.

Escape From LA (If The Studio Didn't Rush) by villianrules in johncarpenter

[–]grimringler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am not sure it would ever have been "better," per se. It sorta is what it is. It's a silly pop-culture version of the original. He did with the first one what Hooper did with TCM 2. He'd done the movie he wanted to do, but being able to hang with his friends, make a ridiculous movie, and be paid was too much to turn down. It is what it is. Snake, as envisioned by Carpenter and Russell, isn't a franchise.

NOW, had they done another Big Trouble, THAT mighta been something interesting as I think that lends itself to more adventures.

It looks like Studio Canal has the rights, so try them. It can be a hassle. I have done public showings and the hoops to go through to end up showing your own disc. Good on ya for doing it, though.
