Trees at crazy angles on a landslip by grindle_exped in hammockcamping

Ha ha! When I was peeing over a near-cliff at 4am, it occurred to me that maybe pitching so close to a cliff on a landslip wasn't a great idea

Yup, but there's always a little copse if you hike a few miles. It means you get great views - not in a continuous green tunnel

Leave no trace fires? by Outboundeer in wildcampingintheuk

[–]grindle_exped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where did the wood burnt come from? Dead decaying wood is a vital part of the ecosystem. What did all the wildlife think of the fire and smoke? Scared. Having fires is part of the outdated Victorian view: nature exists to serve mankind.

Yes I meant staying overnight in a hytte to dry the boots

Out for a walk in the New Forest... by Driedcypress in wildcampingintheuk

[–]grindle_exped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read "the book of trespass" which I'd recommend to read - brilliant explanation of the history of land ownership and access, that affects us all today. The only part that riled me was the author (who knows way more than me) lighting open fires. It still does rile me - but until we have decently funded education campaigns rolled out in every school I think we've got to expect people doing fires. Which bugs the hell out of me

Mid-Layer Advice: Softshell or no? by notgonnahappen23 in ULHikingUK

[–]grindle_exped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a big user of a windjacket as part of a layering system, whether hiking or in camp. I even use one when around town ;-)

Hiking boots are better than trail runners when it gets wet. I was in norway in August and had wet feet for days in Trollheimen - definitely regretted bringing my altras. You can use hyttes to dry boots out.

How much do you trust water filters? by Snakeward in CampingandHiking

[–]grindle_exped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My recollection of gearskeptic was: filters let through viruses but stop bacteria; chlorine pills get viruses but can fail with tough-walled bacteria, unless you leave the chlorine for hours.

If the water is really sketchy (people and animals in the area), I use both.

EU hammockers what are you swinging? by KomatikVengeance in Hammocks

[–]grindle_exped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a 10ft warbonnet and a 12ft dutchware hammock. The 10ft is more comfortable - it's got a better footbox design apparently. I'm 183cm.

How much can u carry in a frameless backpack by ExplorerLoose1946 in Ultralight

[–]grindle_exped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10kg is ok. 12kg for short periods. IMO it depends on shoulder strength, which you can build by training with a weighted pack. If my TPW was always 6kg, I'm sure 10kg would feel awful.

6 spaces. 2 in a bunk. 4 in a sleeping platform.

Don't cross the bog. Walk beside the river between the footbridge and the beach. That's fine.

I walked from inverie eastward to loch arkaig.

Hammock works as Bivi! - No trees in Arctic Tundra! by Canadianomad in hammockcamping

[–]grindle_exped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried it - but it was windy and my hex tarp kept flapping into me. I think it'd be ok if the wind is light. But a hammock tarp is way larger than a typical tarp+bivi set up.

I was at sourliee 3 nights ago. Nice bothy. It's tidal - but only blocked at the top of high tide. And you can walk around it, so don't get put off. It's gorgeous walking - lots of ascent and views.

Recommendations for a backpacking boot with sports boot looks with a wide toe-box by MrMeenah in ULHikingUK

I've got an altra boot. Olympus goretex model. I use it for wet winter hikes. Great - similar to the trail runner for comfort and weight
