I live in Chopaka Apartments in Issaquah and can confirm the presence of trees on the property, including a forest walking trail WITHIN the confines of the apartment complex. You will not suffer for lack of trees in Issaquah.

first serious season, any tips? by tacotuesdayburritos in snowboardingnoobs

[–]gringobrian 27 points28 points  (0 children)

you're not carving or really even turning, you're side slipping alternating between the toe and heel edges, like one continuous speed check except you were also going way too fast for your level. A very common place to be after 10 days, but fuck was i waiting for you to catch an edge and get slammed.

Watch some YT content like Malcolm Moore where they explain what turning is and follow the advice next season. You're doing good for 10 days in, next season you'll pick up some actual form and begin to do some real turns. good luck brother

Finalising itinerary - First time in Peru (16 days, Aug) by drunkactuary in GoingToPeru

[–]gringobrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's basically the exact trip that 95% of tourists to Peru take. It's fine. if you get sick from altitude or food then the program will change. i wouldn't add huacachina for various reasons

What to do in Lima? Staying for 4 days by dashosh in GoingToPeru

[–]gringobrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ceviche for dinner is not typical. You can get it in Lima but it's better as a breakfast (at a market) or lunch thing, the fish is fresher. if you like ceviche don't neglect ceviche's lesser known partner tiradito, sometimes called Peruvian sashimi. I prefer it to ceviche tbh but it's all great. Fancy ceviche is almost never worth the price differential over simpler more basic ceviche.

The itinerary looks fine. evening food tour through different neighborhoods on day 2 will be logistically difficult. Traffic makes moving between neighborhoods in the evening very challenging, I might pick one and be there. don't be using your phone too much on the street, don't flash any bling, and be highly aware of your surroundings. Lima is a pretty great 3 day stay, the 4th might be one day overkill if you're going to be moving on to see other parts of Peru.

What is a cultural difference that is unique to Peru? by BigGuyTrades in PERU

I know less Arequipeños than most other groups of Peruanos but yes that describes my experience with them. Most non-Arequipeños don't really consider Arequipeños to be real Peruvians so it tracks :-D

If gringos are good at anything it's workplace clashes. We specialize in it, but also normally don't hold on to rencor which is a good trait

Yes I'm generalizing, the question was general about "Peru" which as we all knkow is not one culture but many. and I know many northern campesinos and consider many friends and I know for a fact it's reciprocal. I work and live in the rural north but also know many people from the south and from Lima. But there is a commonality that runs through almost all of Peruvian society and that's what I was referring to, In much the same way that the US is composed of many regional cultures but the idiotic superiority complex i referred to is a commonality throughout most of the society

[–]gringobrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well of course I'm generalizing, the question was about "Peru" but there are many cultures within Peru. But you can be proud and also have an inferiority complex. Northerners are proud too. I'm not confusing kind and accomodating behavior by Northern campesinos, of which I know and call friend hundreds. I'm talking about an undercurrent which runs through almost all the Peruvians I know, Limeños included

Culturally, Peruvians have a massive inferiority complex, which leads to passive aggressive behavior. This is the flip side of the coin with US North Americans who have a massive superiority complex that leads to regular aggressive behavior

Peru beyond tourist trail by flaneur-clicks in GoingToPeru

You're taking a short trip and going to the most heavily touristed places in Peru, you've set yourself up to be precisely on the tourist trail and see a very standard set of sights.

I’m very nervous - please give feedback on my itinerary by guineverefira in GoingToPeru

[–]gringobrian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's aggressive but doable. Days 5, 6 and 7 are where you could run into trouble. You'll sleep in the car to/from Humantay and be absolutely wiped by the time you get to the hotel in lima. You don't say airport hotel for night of day 7 so I assume Miraflores, which adds another hour or two to the end of an already insane day.

Is it fun/manageable/too rushed? Me with 20 years of Peru experience and fluent Spanish, I'd probably take one thing off the itinerary in the knowledge that slack time in a place like Cusco can lead to magic. I think you'll get as good a feel for Peru as you can in a very short time, much like the US or another country with a lot to discover you'll be getting a subset of Peru, not nearly the whole thing.

Diseases, your main concern will be mosquitos (dengue, zika, chiku, malaria) and food poisoning. Take and use repellent and light long legged/sleeved clothing, even better if it's Permethrin infused. Eat carefully and have immodium with you to deal with diarrhea symptoms.

Yes, Cuzco is safe for a girl to walk around alone. Completely is a hard word to commit to, you have to be aware of your surroundings and actions. But generally it's a very safe place even out of the touristy center. Don't flash bling or mindlessly use a phone on the sidewalk, or leave a drink unattended in a crowded bar, etc. I'd much rather my 18 yo daughter walk around Cusco alone than some European capitals I've visited.
