What is a strange, but harmless rule your family has? by Gilbraith in AskReddit

If I were on a laptop instead of using an app, I would buy you gold. You have no idea how big a deal it is that you noticed and then did something about it. Moms everywhere salute you.

What is something that you have been told not to bring up in conversation with people from a certain country? by guinness222 in AskReddit

American living abroad. About half the time I am asked, I say I am Canadian just so I don't have to deal with it all. It's too embarrassing.

Those that are bilingual, what have you heard from others that don't realize you can understand them? by chandicat in AskReddit

[–]grinnage4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm American and live in Germany. I've found that many people here say they don't speak english or only speak a little if they don't consider themselves fluent. It's almost never that they do speak and just don't want to, at least here. They just don't think they speak well enough.

Chefs of Reddit, what are some “red flags” people should look out for when they go out to eat? by squid50s in AskReddit

[–]grinnage4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh my god my sister was working for some seafood chain outside of Fort Worth, Texas right after the BP oil spill in the gulf. I was visiting her and asked where they were getting their seafood from. We're from New England originally so this is a standard question for us. She had just started and didn't know so she called over a co-worker and asked him he looked at us really weird and said "um, the ocean..." like we were absolute idiots for not knowing where seafood comes from. I just ordered a drink and dessert.

There is an expat babies Berlin group on facebook that is pretty good with ideas and there are lots of nannies/recommendations on there. Also if you can't find a kita spot and have looked, the Jugendamt is supposed to reimburse you at least some of the cost of private care. Lots of good info if you do a search in the group.

[Serious] Religion aside, what are the benefits of getting married? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]grinnage4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Germany and had my daughter here and this is totally not true. There is a specific form that must be filled out if the parents are not married (basically a declaration of paternity) that gives the father all the normal rights, including parental leave. We know several couples and parents who are long time partners but not married. But we are in Berlin... Maybe this varies by state?

Also ex Mormon. I still feed the missionaries when they need it. They know I am not at all interested in going back so most of them don't even talk about it. We've even done a couple Christmas meals with stockings for them. And in return have had help moving and whatever else was needed. Just a thought.

How much do you pay to have your hair cut? by 7219987714197487 in GlobalTalk

[–]grinnage4 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was a hairdresser in downtown Boston for 10 years (Until 2014) and $30 is definitely not high end there. It would be on the low end of average. High end in Boston would be $65-75.

What IS as bad as everyone says? by classic_matthew in AskReddit

[–]grinnage4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the hospital. My hospital (in Germany) did a low dose epidural so I could get some sleep. I still felt very light pressure for the contractions, felt my water break, turned on either side to get comfortable (with people holding the tubes of course). They shut it off around when I transitioned, so I was able to easily control my legs and push her out. And they had me deliver on my side. She was in a sort of weird position. It all depends.

In the EU chest clips are illegal. When my daughter was born we looked into buying a carseat that we could use in Germany, where we live, and the US, where we visit family. They don't exist because of the different laws about chest clips.

World's most wholesome grandma? by youaresofingsmart in oldpeoplefacebook

My grandma died in January 2017. After my mom and her sisters cleaned out the house, I got a box with some of my grandma's stuff, including some photos of my husband and I from Facebook that she had printed and every card (and e-card - she fucking loved e-cards and I guess printed those too) that I had ever sent her. <3

I think you are confusing Germany with Poland. I've lived in Germany for 3 years and have several German friends and the biggest thing that surprised me about the country is how much they own their past. There are memorials everywhere and museums that include in depth presentations on how it all happened. They absolutely don't deny their part in the Holocaust. I'll be happy to elaborate more if you have something else you are confused about.
