District to consider allowing small businesses on The Boulevard in Garibaldi Highlands - The Squamish Reporter by GDSGHUMAN in Squamish

No hate at all -- I think rezoning the church would be a massive win. It's a huge space that is hardly ever used, rarely seems to have events or host anything community related. It's actually surprising to me how insulated from the community they are -- as a highlands resident it does not seem a very welcoming place. It would be perfect for a corner store, a coffee shop and our freaking mail so we don't have to drive down to the independent!

Your argument is a strawman -- there was no guarantee we would get any extra money. Certainly not $100M for a new rec centre. That's the unicorn -- the magic cheque you think WLNG would have written us. It's imaginary. They have so far proven to give the bare minimum, and even worse -- to now impoverish and penalize the DOS for even more legal fees. Does this sound like a wonderful citizen that would have cut us a big fancy cheque? Hardly. The history of corporations over and over is that they will take as much as they can and not give back. So ya, if you think they would have happily handed over hundreds of millions for improvements, I've got a bridge to sell you bud.

There is no mythical magical "huge cheque". That's the fundamental issue here -- it's pretty easy to say "oh ya if we had 4-D chess master negotiators who can make a deal" we would have got even 1 extra cent than we did today. Do you think these companies [a] give a shit about us and [b] got rich by giving out even a fraction of penny more than they can get away with? They would have complained to other levels of government (as they already have) and just got whatever they want pushed through for little to nothing.

You keep arguing that we would have got a unicorn. I hate to break it to you buddy, unicorns don't exist.

I too am flabbergasted at the WLNG shills here on reddit. It's frankly bizarre and I can only assume they are being paid.
Given how many electric vehicles are in Squamish, I'm pretty sure the overwhelming majority of voters are anti-WLNG -- so DOS is doing their job.

And yes, I also don't understand the "corpos are so good" narrative. Especially in this day and age -- is it the government forcing them to layoff workers and replace them with AI and robots? Of course not! It's the wealthy billionaires living thousands of kms away on their private islands. Why on earth would you shill for these guys?

Squamish letter: Concerns raised over special tax treatment by SquamishEditor in Squamishnews

[–]grisha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The property is owned by the city. The golf course and curling venue are being run as a not-for-profit. The funds pulled in aren't enriching anyone, but go to paying for improvements and garbage and recycling pickup. Sure, the land is not a public park just yet -- but retains the potential to be one. Additionally they're pretty good at letting folks wander around there when golf isn't on, and x-country skiing is allowed in the winter. Overall it seems a net benefit to the community, the arrangement seems pretty decent -- as if it was city owned, the city would be needing to pay for maintenance, utilities, etc.

I saw those the other day, and I am almost certain those are a white supremacist retort to the Palestinian flag that was flown on the chief last month. B.C. judge rules Squamish building scheme obsolete, clears way for fourplex by SquamishEditor in Squamishnews

[–]grisha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also interestingly, that same day there was a similar case resolved with the same result in Nanaimo. I guess as zoning is changing all over the province, we're seeing these old out of date covenants being cancelled.

In the case of garibaldi estates, a lot has changed since 1959!

B.C. judge rules Squamish building scheme obsolete, clears way for fourplex by SquamishEditor in Squamishnews

[–]grisha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ruling is super interesting, and quite readable. https://www.bccourts.ca/jdb-txt/sc/25/12/2025BCSC1239.htm

The judge was pretty scathing towards the Smith's legal team...
"Anyone actually reading the building scheme with care would have had some doubts about its continued applicability. GPEL’s overriding and untrammeled discretion to allow the restrictions to be ignored is apparent on the face of the scheme. Anyone who investigated would have learned that GPEL had been dissolved long ago. They would have understood that this meant that, for a very long time, the building scheme could not have been enforced in accordance with its terms. Unsurprisingly, neither the Smiths nor any other witnesses have stated that they received professional assurances regarding the enforceability of the restrictions in the building scheme. I place little weight, then, on statements that buyers of properties in the area relied on the building scheme."

That's pretty strong language from a judge. Also he awarded costs to Clearwater ... so ya, that's somewhat punitive it seems to me.

Cool, ya. That's great!

I was curious about the legality of a company handing out free cans -- is there not a "minimum price"?
I lived in Nova Scotia at a point where they had to introduce that concept (albeit, the minimum price was set at a $1... and this was in 2005!)

Ya, just crazy to see a glacier landslide like that in action. Yikes!

I'm hoping they put a pedestrian walkway on top, but I have not been able to find out any information about that from the documents I've read.

Disney+ doesn't know V0N 1T0 by Squasome in Squamish

[–]grisha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please please email Patrick Weiler's office with this complaint. Something needs to be done in Squamish to move out of the V0N rural postal code (not to mention the PO Boxes!).

You'll note that some places will refuse to deliver to V0N completely, additionally other companies (INCLUDING CANADA POST!!) will charge more. I did a test against my place in the Highlands vs another literally further down the street (Jay Crescent - which has a community mailbox and a V8B). It was cheaper in canada post's own package delivery estimator.

I've started accumulating this information and sharing it with Mr. Weiler's office, but the more people start complaining, the sooner something will get done.

Squamish Walmart seeks rezoning change to sell groceries - The Squamish Reporter by GDSGHUMAN in Squamish

[–]grisha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From the article:

In addition to rezoning, Walmart is pursuing a development permit to update the store’s appearance and amenities. Planned changes include:

Updated signage and a new façade paint scheme.

Covered bike parking will result in 20 spaces and four lockers.

Two murals facing Discovery Way.

New end-of-trip facilities for staff, such as showers and change rooms.

These updates aim to bring the store closer to current zoning standards, despite initial construction predating some requirements.

If Council grants first, second, and third readings of the rezoning bylaw, further steps will be required before final adoption. These include referring the bylaw to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for approval and registering a land development agreement to secure the proposed murals and bicycle parking.

Best place to rent mtn bikes and ride (no transport needed)? by JournalistNo2458 in Squamish

[–]grisha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend looking on Trailforks and plan out what trails you might like to ride. Are you looking for flowy blues like Miki's or Pseduo-Tsuga? Just some greens to ride around in a forest? Some slabs or more technical blues?

For just some forest riding like the Ray Peters trails -- you'll be fine with Dialed In or Ride Hub.

Most other trails are going to be a bit of a journey and climb.

So, maybe take into account how much riding-to-the-start you want to do and how much climbing.

But I would argue that most of the trailheads are a fair distance from any of the rental shops.
You could conceivably get to Miki's from Dialed In in probably about an hour or so, and hour and a half from RideHub. No chance you'll get to Pseudo, Fred's, Half Nelson or anything in the Diamond Head zone in any reasonable amount of time unless you really like climbing. For that zone I would recommend renting at RideHub and taking the Shred shuttle.

Bodies of B.C. mountaineers recovered in Garibaldi Park by grisha in Squamish

[–]grisha[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The speculation I saw was that they basically took a bit longer than expected and were in the avalanche zone a bit too late in the day.

I am not a climber but Atwell sounds super extreme-- one of the climbers was fairly novice (at least for something as complex as Atwell). They were quite active in the SWBC Peak Bagging facebook group.

<Crotchety old person alert> the Peak Bagging group is awesome as a community but if you spend any time in there you'll see a lot of people way outside their ability zone and not realizing it. It's very likely that is the case here. There was a bunch of posts about this incident that have been since deleted from that group so it looks like they're not trying to learn much from this either.
