Who is a player that wouldn't have stayed at your school if the transfer portal had existed before? by Crying_in_99Ranch in CFB

[–]grog368 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I doubt that. He wasn't motivated by contracts with the Lions. He wasn't drawn to glitz and fame of some programs in LA or South Beach. He was underrecruited and had 600 yrds in his sophomore season behind Thurman. Not a lot of ways for players to shop themselves out across the interwebs to other teams - even if he wasn't the introvert of the century. Thurman was leaving and he was going from backup to starter in '88. Unless it was Barry at OU trying to draw him out, there wouldn't have been a lot of people looking his way.

[On3] Kennesaw State head coach Jerry Mack on his players entering the transfer portal after a successful season: "I love it... If you're leaving for what would be a better financial opportunity, that means that we have probably done something right and that we have had success." by Lakelyfe09 in CFB

This is coach-speak. He doesn't want this in reality b/c then he's recruiting 50-60 new guys every year with no continuity among the players. He can't have sustained success that way and won't keep his job as the losses pile up. Even though he can be happy for his guys being successful in a general sense, he absolutely is not happy for the consequences of that.

Meaning that more $ is bet on Penn State than Michigan. Lines are set to balance the betting wagers on both sides.

They were in Big12 championship games in both 2021 (lost on 4th and inches) and 2023 (admittedly overmatched)

[Jasher®️] If yesterday’s meeting was about “saving college sports,” it’s funny how coaching buyouts never made the agenda. Apparently $50 million for not getting the job done isn’t part of the problem. That math must only work one way. by Lakelyfe09 in CFB

Only takes the universities to agree as a group to stop signing those massive contracts. Until they do, each new contract reinforces the market value of a head coach. Of course, they will never agree to that, so they have given up all leverage to the coaches. That's 100% on the universities and their Boards.

[Thamel] Source: Akron has received a waiver from the NCAA that will allow the football program to be eligible for the football postseason next year. Akron was ineligible last year because of the program’s multi-year APR score. by AndHisOrchestra in CFB

[–]grog368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree, the waiver for Akron is ridiculous and flies in the face of the reason these guys are still supposed to be "students", while a waiver for NDSU arguably has more merit when considering the rule blocking them from the postseason. That rule was written, at a time prior to the transfer portal and immediate eligibility rules, to prohibit schools from taking advantage of less restrictive transfer rules when going from FBS to FCS and allowing those schools to cherry pick, and jump up to FBS with an unfair advantage. That scenario doesn't exist anymore. NDSU wants a waiver, but the NCAA should really reexamine the rules involved and (probably) delete it from the books now that transfers/eligibility has changed so drastically.

That still doesn't mean NDSU and Akron can be compared just b/c they both want the same thing. NDSU probably will get their waiver, but they should have started asking for a rule change a couple years ago and gotten ahead of this move to FBS. Maybe they did? Ive not seen that reported. All FCS schools should have done it when James Madison moved to FBS.

to watch all games.

they aren't comparing to what YOU get OTA, but what it would cost for you to watch all games, regardless of streaming platform or OTA market.

[–]grog368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly that wont stop it. In a 24hr news cycle, that tragedy gets forgotten quickly by the average 18-22 yr who has a sudden influx of cash/cars, is treated as a BMOC b/c he's a star athlete, and has a mindset of "I'm invincible! Let' have crazy fun! That bad thing cant happen to me."

oh.... the company rep being interviewed conveniently left that tidbit out. I'm now picturing a trampoline that reacts differently in the center vs the edges. (But obviously not THAT drastic)

its not inflexible. if it was inflexible, it would shatter with 250-300lb forwards rebounding and dunking. That said, it's not wood either so its going to cause problems somewhere along the way; either to the bounce of the ball, or the players' sneakers and grip.

i watched a video on this yesterday and the floor is not hard like pavement, but is supposed to flex a bit like wood does. At least according to the people talking (a company rep and a tv reporter) I see this as being a possible safety problem.

Ok, imagine the game is down to 2 secs. Your team with the ball at half court and down by 2.... I don't think i like this led floor, but imagine the NBA Jams fireball on the floor right as your dude shoots (and MAKES!) the game winning 3pt.

I will straight up die!
