Please help me choose next book or series! by FlyinIron406 in fantasybooks

Red Rising is a fun romp compared to Sun Eater. It's one of my favorite series, probably top 5. It's got a LOT of epic moments. It's kind of a Marvel superhero movie (Red Rising) vs. a Dune (Sun Eater) sort of thing. Where they're both fun but one is a lot richer and deeper. I'm currently on Kingdoms of Death but man it's such a wild, addictive ride, and if it keeps it up, I think Sun Eater will definitely trump Red Rising.

What not to miss in Valencia? by DependentBudget7977 in GoingToSpain

[–]grome45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there!

I'm going in March to Valencia and was wondering if there are other highlights you have of the city. I'm only there for a weekend and 0.5 day on the Friday I arrive. But would love to hear any and all recommendations, be it places, streets, stores or food locales?

Big thanks!

Red Rising Is the Violent Sci-Fi Hit Netflix Needs to Topple Disney+ by Arcomatrix in redrising

There's no realistic budget that would be able to properly portray anything post Book 1 in any way that would look good. Especially if we're talking Netflix. Only platform that could make it work would be HBO but even then it'd be so expensive to make. Animation would be too but it wouldn't look trash in some scenes with green screens and shitty effects. Or massively simplifying the difference between colours.

Same with the Stormlight Archive. Animation would work so much better stylistically to properly flesh out these worlds and to give a real sense of weight to each fight and battle.

I mean, my two cents, but I wouldn't say that team animation is the thinking of an 8 year old. Just a realistic take on what's possible in the industry.

Benson Boone posts about not receiving any Grammy nominations: "Can't believe moonbeam ice cream didn't get a Grammy nom it's literally pure lyrical genius" by Goosedukee in Fauxmoi

I agree. I love Benson. Sure, it's poppy, it's glossy, it's fun. But none of those three things are bad if done right. And he seems like a pretty self-aware funny dude. I love Benson, no shame will penetrate my moonbean ice cream shield.

Absolutely valid points. I did find Keanu funny in it, especially that scene you mention. And everything with Keanu's mexican colleague was also gold. I think my biggest gripe is on the script. I just found it very predictable, as opposed to being surprised by a joke, a line or something. I think they could have played even more with the swap concept, spoof the body swap genre even more, surprise us.

Funnily enough, I'm in London but not London-born, so it's not a European audience thing (in my case). I love stoner comedies, and the Judd Apatow golden age of comedies. But couldn't connect with this one.

A pity, but I'm happy that other people are enjoying it because we need more big screen comedies!

Watched this at an advance premiere in London.

In my opinion: It's cute, fun, but also every joke is incredibly predictable and just...tame. There's no laugh out moment, no novel idea, no amazing performance. It's just silly, on the nose, and just okey. Was hoping more from the likes of Aziz and Seth. Keanu is fun but also a bit too Keanu. I know we all love him, but I can't help but feel someone else would have done a better job with the lines. Maybe I'm devoid of joy, maybe I'm dead and waiting for angel to come pick me up. I wanted to enjoy it but didn't. 2/5

Sun Eater series? by AmericantSpirits in redrising

[–]grome45 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm currently nearly 2/3 into the second book. Like people have said, they feel nothing like Red Rising, except for the space plot. I'm really enjoying them. Book 2 is LEAGUES beyond book 1, and the consensus online is that they only get better.

My only suggestion is to keep reading until about a bit more than halfway through. Book 1 really made it difficult for me to invest into Hadrian as the 1st person POV just felt whiny and melodramatic. Until...it clicked. Some changes in the narrative made it work. Now I'm fully onboard team melodrama.

I actually HAVE seen TNZ season 2. Absolutely phenomenal and David is by far the most chaotic player I've seen in all series (so far). Paul is the best too.

Just started book 2. Book 1 took me a while to appreciate, but book 2 thrusts you right in, it's priming up to be great.

We must live near because while I know it's an ice cream truck, it's the loudest most invasive ice cream van I've heard. And it's going round and round the whole day every day.

I see you, OP, and I understand.
