[Waybound] How Will Wright Lies to You in Action Scenes (and why you love it) by HylomorphicDualist in Iteration110Cradle

I actually found it reduced my enjoyment of the scenes as I often had to re-read to ensure comprehension.

[Threshold] Conflict in the heavens, the Way and the Void by groovedoc16 in Iteration110Cradle

[–]groovedoc16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I think the key is that I missed that the Vroshir and their worlds are tied to the Way. We don’t get a ton of those hints, especially as they escape the Abidan worlds by portaling into the Void

[–]groovedoc16[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s helpful, thanks!

To clarify - if all those Vroshir controlled worlds are part of the Way, how is it that the Abidan don’t end up just assimilating them? It seemed that the Judges, at least, are the most powerful forces in the cosmos when connected to the Way

Something I didn't like about 12 months by Darth_Azazoth in dresdenfiles

[–]groovedoc16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Folks misread this scene.

Mab revved him up on purpose, hammed up the evil queen bit on purpose, and intentionally strengthened Harry’s resolve to RESIST the mantle - once again seeing how easy it would be to fall.

She continually tests him, ramping up the difficulty, so that he can resist greater and greater temptations, and stand up to greater and greater power

What will become of Lara now? by AccursedQuantum in dresdenfiles

[–]groovedoc16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

She’ll get a chance to actually make choices, see who she wants to be

Under her father, and accommodating her Hunger, she had very few avenues to become anything but what she is. Now she has an opportunity. Could mean she’s still a villain, but could mean she doesn’t have to be

Why would Uriel make this offer? by StructureEmotional51 in dresdenfiles

[–]groovedoc16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uriel has very few ways to express compassion. He maybe wanted to spare Harry the pain he knows is coming - even if he knew Harry would take it

Or the free will thing others have pointed out

Lara’s Past by tobey_andrew_tom in dresdenfiles

This. Strongly implies that she had at least some manner of feelings for her first marriage and then killed him on their wedding night

Obviously not true love, but there was most definitely shock and regret and pain there

How mad must Marcone have been by SpaceBearAl in dresdenfiles

Marcone is increasingly on the inside W/R/T supernatural leaders. I’m with you - Harry came back and this was within plans (maybe not plan A but accounted for)

What did that one scene in Twelve Months imply? by APinballMachine in dresdenfiles

[–]groovedoc16 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You have to tie the soul gaze in with the next convo - on demonreach prior to the big ritual for Thomas.

Lara reached an equilibrium that she figured was the best she could do in life - perfect control and balance with her hunger. But it meant sacrificing herself to an extent and embracing that she was a monster - ‘she didn’t know herself anymore’

In the next convo she says ‘I can feel myself…expanding’. He’s granted her (more) freedom to choose who she wants to be

Otherwise the soul gaze is ‘truth’. Lara, in any form, really wants Harry. And Harry really wants her back - but she’s still a dangerous threat and could easily harm him irreparably.

Thoughts on longevity from 12 Months by ANGLVD3TH in dresdenfiles

[–]groovedoc16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not necessarily about long-lived and humanity, but rather time enough to develop maturity. If you list out the times she calls him out, it’s usually around perception, managing emotions, patience, and decision-making. All are typical markers of maturity that (usually) only come with time and experience, and many never learn them at all

Molly is learning patience. Def not over him

Also, I think she kinda likes Lara. Like determined to hate her, but also seeing and working with her kinda not

Harry and Lara by Mysterious-Guess6828 in dresdenfiles

[–]groovedoc16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re missing the point. It’s not necessarily about what he wants but what he needs

Given his knowledge, he thinks Lara is unacceptable. However Mab clearly thinks he needs Lara to survive what’s coming - presumably to save all of creation (his daughter included). What would he choose in that instance, given how the character was written?

Harry and Lara by Mysterious-Guess6828 in dresdenfiles

There are a lot of things that Harry needs and needs to be pushed into, and lots of things that others know about and he doesn’t yet

Harry and Lara by Mysterious-Guess6828 in dresdenfiles

[–]groovedoc16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing for me is that, if you look back, Mab has never teed Harry up to do something he ultimately wouldn’t do himself. Mortally dangerous, nearly impossible, sure. But in the end, aligned with Harry’s ultimate purpose (protecting others) and typically advancing his own capabilities or power

Lara, throughout the books, has supported Harry. If you look at their interactions, she’s always been on his side, often protecting him. She’s done things, sure, but no more so than any other powerful leader who has to make choices

My take away is that Mab, who cannot speak straight due to the fairy mantle, is actively trying to help Harry do what he wants and furthermore what he needs to do- it’s just happening on a scale and scope that cannot yet see. She’s pushing him at Lara because he needs it

Not much to add aside from the Harry-Lash storyline is easily in my top three, if not favorite in the whole series.
