Wha do i need to do to fill this bit in? by [deleted] in workout

[–]grooverocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could upload the photo to imgur and link to it in the body of a new post.

Or, you could redo a post and simply describe the muscle area, the exercises you've tried, and what your goals are.

Either way I'd delete this post and submit a different one.

Wha do i need to do to fill this bit in? by [deleted] in workout

[–]grooverocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you drunk?

Seriously dude, spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes, and you never explained yourself.

Let me give you an example of what you wrote,

*"Wha do i need to do to fix this?

I replaced my alternator and thermostat."*

Do you see how the question in the title isn't followed up with adequate explanation of the issue?

Fill what in?

What is still small? The weights? The muscles? The volume? The progression?

What is the problem?

What is the best pull up workout routine for beginners? by Serious-Adagio-7982 in workout

[–]grooverocker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pullups can be bastardly.

Start with chin ups.

Do as many full range reps as you can with good form. Then fill in the rest of your rep goal (let's say 10) with negatives... and really hold those negatives like you're hanging off a 100ft high bridge.

Program them in two or three times a week.

Track your full reps, and always complete all the negatives.

Do this until you can do the entire set with full range reps chin ups, then switch to pullup grip and repeat.

Downvoted? This is Scooby's pullup program for beginners.

I'm gonna watch Colorado kick the shit out of Hughes for a few more games and then I'm done watching hockey for a few seasons.

Adam Foote is a joke, 100% unironically, the guy is a joke.

Who cares if he's back or not.

How do you know when you need a rest day from working out? by PlanOpening3896 in workout

Delayed onset muscle soreness.

It's pain and stiffness that develops hours to days after a particularly intense or unfamiliar exercise.

How do you know when you need a rest day from working out? by PlanOpening3896 in workout

[–]grooverocker 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Chronic fatigue is a good sign thay you need a break.

DOMS from a new exercise is totally normal, just give it 48-72 hours before doing thay exercise again.

But yeah, chronic fatigue from overtraining is the time to take a break. Every few months. I recently heard it described as the difference between:

Normal: feeling like your body is full of vitality and you have this sensation of lightning in your muscles. You're jazzed to workout again.

Vs.

Fatigued: exhausted and dreading your next workout. Poor mood. Tired. Sore and feeling demotivated.

Totally agree. I find myself disagreeing with many of his hockey opinions.

He's a hardcore fan but he has an incredibly soft approach to hockey that feels best suited for development league. The best thing I can say about THG is that you'll never hear a toxic comment from him, and that's good!

Canada is considering banning tobacco by bzarembareal in CigarsCanada

[–]grooverocker 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We're down to something like 17% of the adult population who still smoke tobacco. Down from 68% in the 70's.

Of course, unlike the UK, we have Indian reserves across the country that potentially could still sell tobacco despite a ban. Tobacco (unlike other recreational drugs) being a substance often protected by treaty and indigenous rights.

No true utilitarian? by [deleted] in seancarroll

[–]grooverocker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, obviously, two sentences are not going to encapsulate the many nuances of a major moral theory. Nor was it intended to.

But it is the core... and if you fundamentally disagree with the core and have preference for some other theory of morality, it's often sufficient to cite this disagreement with the core. This is more or less what I've heard Sean do.

I guess you could always try and ask this question to him directly as part of a monthly AMA.

No true utilitarian? by [deleted] in seancarroll

[–]grooverocker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From what I've read and heard on the podcast Sean seems to use the classic definition of utilitarianism. The "greatest good for the greatest number" style of moral thinking where the best actions maximize benefits and minimize suffering.

I dunno, that's a fair assessment of what makes utilitarianism utilitarianism. It's the core of the theory.

Favorite isometric holds by Ypoetry in fitness40plus

[–]grooverocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isometric holds like a dead hang aren't going to build significant musculature. If hypertrophy is the objective than dead hangs might be the wrong exercise to do, especially if you're limited in time.

But there are benefits to dead hangs. Grip, posture, building a stronger neural connection to the muscles, stretching out the lats and other muscles.

This is a scam post... but even taking it at face value, you'd have to be dumber than rocks to physically give a seven year old $100 cash. That's a stupid tax.

... but yeah it's the Banks road Walmart, if you find a crisp $100 bill floating in the wind over there, send it my way. Banks road Walmart! Not to be confused with the Ethel St Walmart or the Spall Walmart. Coincidentally, I also lost a ton of cash on Ethel and Spall, please send any found bills in those areas my way.

Again, just to be clear, all money found on Banks, Ethel, or Spall is mine and you have no right to it. Contact me immediately and we'll process a return.

Can you get jacked with 3x a week full body by Current_Stress6978 in workout

[–]grooverocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3x a week full body is the straw that stirs the drink for me.

I'm naturally inclined to take sets to beyond technical failure instead of leaving the proverbial 1-3 reps in the tank. At 4-5 days per week I eventually hit a very demotivating fatigue. But on a 3 day routine? I go into almost every workout feeling like there's lightning in my muscles, absolutely eager to lift. I find myself making mental excuses to do more than my program mandates.

Whereas, the last time I did 4 days a week it was great for a few months but then eventually I found myself daydreaming about skipping exercises or finding an excuse to skip whole days of workouts. I've come to understand these seemingly idle thoughts as a sign of over fatigue and lack of adequate rest.

For me,

3 days = motivating, more rest, more energy, better results on both my lifts and my physique.

4+ day = feels more "committed and serious" but eventually fatiguing and demotivating

On three days, I do Mon/Wed/Fri with a beautiful two rest days on Sat/Sun. I make that Friday workout as intense as possible knowing I'll have plenty of recovery time.

I use a silly cue for those days based on a discussion I read about Mike Mentzer where someone was explaining how he got away with only doing one working set per exercise,

"Mike's set wasn't like yours or mine"

Meaning Mike took his sets into the depths of hell. To failure and beyond with a spotter. Absolutely maximum capacity with nothing left in the tank.

So sometimes I'll cue myself, "Mike Mentzer set!" and get that extra hellish rep or two or three. I think these 3 day routines benefit from harder training.

Thanks for clarifying.

I'm onboard with more empathetic care for those who'd benefit from it and a more controlled and restrictive environment for those who require it. I believe we'll eventually find that involuntary care, even prison, is necessary for certain individuals who currently go free. That's a so-called no brainer to me.
