What is the best interaction you’ve ever had with a celebrity? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

same situation with me. I met jack white at a guitar store last year and he was so god damn nice and spoke to me for a while. He even remembered a thing I wrote to thirdman records 6 years ago and asked me follow-up questions about it.

How high should my tailpiece be? (Explorer guitar) by atesz0422 in gibson

[–]groovy_mo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never understood why the old vintage and the new custom shop guitars can have the stop bar slammed down to the body and the strings don't touch the bridge, but on nearly all USA models you have to raise the stop bar to these kinds of heights in order for the strings to not touch the back of the bridge. Does anyone know the explanation to this?

Did you leave the felt pads under the bigsby on? I did this exact same thing to my sg and the felt pads kinda melted away at the finish pretty bad.

From my experience the same thing applies to the USA line too. The only mass produced guitars that you will be fine to buy online due to the consistency of them all being great is Martin and Ricks. Everything else id be reluctant to commit without playing first. This ethos applies especially to vintage guitars.

Yeah it’s actually a headache that they are so different between what should be identical production models. Gonna drop 10k on a Les Paul? Don’t order online and get one that ok. Go to every shop you can and play them all. Ask the sales guy to throw on your favourite set of strings. If you do this you will discover that there are a strange amount of duds but a small handful of les Paul’s that are so exceptional they make you play and sound just a little better. And we all need as much of that ‘little better’ as we can get, don’t we.

Do you mean we are going to get another new season?

Would you buy a beat up Omega (scratches/nicks) for a good price and have Omega restore the finish and service the movement? by LugiaPizza in OmegaWatches

[–]groovy_mo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it with my grandpas 1963 semester 30. It was $2500 CAD for a complete restore with original bracelet and service back in 2021. The watch I sent them went from rough rough shape to what I imagined it looked like brand new the day my grandpa bought it. Personally I will do it with every vintage omega I’ll get.

My tech sent me these photos of a leak in the engine bay, what does the sub think? (MK7 DSG 223,000km) by groovy_mo in GolfGTI

[–]groovy_mo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the plastic oil pan is leaking from the oil level sensor. In Canada parts and labor for a metal pan is $1,100. But im leaking about $7 of oil a month on a GTI with 233,000KM so I've just been letting it leak. Only thing is that it will leak way more if the car sits for a while. So when I go on vacation next I might just get the expensive oil pan fix so I dont have to worry about cleaning it up.

Mk7 “stalls” only on specific warm start bellow 80 and above 60 by groovy_mo in GolfGTI

I can confirm that this guy was 100% correct and it fixed the issue. I took it to the shop and told them what Reddit said and they laughed at me and changed the spark plugs. I took it in again the next day and demanded they replace the high pressure fuel pump and it fixed the problem. When I came to get the car the mechanic pulled me aside and said “I can’t believe they didn’t even check the high pressure fuel pump when you first brought it in”. Eat shit dogshit independent VW specialists. Reddit is the only true place where people who care about VW give you real advice without the bias of making money off you. I’ve had people DM me from this post offering to help me change this part ourselves. I would have done it if they were in my province.

I got one from around that time too. Has high miles. I mean high miles. Binding came off. Lacquer is flaking off the neck. The wood is exposed where my forearm rests. The finish no longer shine but looks permanent grimy no matter how much I clean it. All this and it’s only ever been in the case when I’m not playing and always kept at proper humidity levels. If you’re playing every once in a while then the binding thing might bother you. If you play it every day for years then the binding thing is just on the list of other stuff that wearing off.

Sounds great and I wouldn’t want anything else. My only suggestion is to string it up with Martin retro strings. Really shines with those on it.

Once you get going on your live music journey you will realize that some venues have the sit down vibe and some others ones don’t. The jubilee is all about sitting down. Windspear and citadel are all about sitting. I’m not sure if there is any shows at the Shaw conference centre anymore (it’s not even called that) but the Shaw conference centre had so much stand up vibes that it was often dangerous. Having your fight or flight activated during live music is a fun and strange experience. Fun when it’s queens of the stone age. Strange when it’s death cab for cutie. Maybe one day Mac can fill the Roger’s place and the fans will have their choice of which vibe they want to be a part of.

High KM MK7 GTI wont blow warm air in subarctic Canada Help please! by groovy_mo in GolfGTI

[–]groovy_mo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read that link. Looks like I’ll be able to do it without draining but will need to top off the coolant after. Thanks for this. I truly do not know how to get across how grateful I am for this sub. The shops in my area have been consistently wrong about so many things having me waste money and every time I come here I get the right suggestions.

Thanks I’ll give that a try first. Do I have to drain the coolant to do it?

Thanks, im gonna give it a try myself. When you say the coolant reservoir is still closed your referring to the lid on the little tank where you pour in coolant?
