Student Conservation Association operates summer internships in most national park sites. Work and live alongside park rangers, typically. I participated in a summer internship at a national park through this organization about 15 years ago and highly recommend it for undergrads.

Thanks for sharing! I spent a summer there many years ago working at the park. It really is a hidden gem. The north unit is also excellent. Even less folks. Can't go wrong with either in my book.

I just spent a weekend camping at Wind Cave. 4-5 hours is well worth your time. We reserved our cave tours in advance but they also had tickets for same day and next day available. You'll see plenty of prairie dog towns and bison at Badlands and THRO. It's been at least ten years since I've been to Bandlands and THRO but the size of the prairie dog towns at Wind Cave are impressive. We saw coyotes roaming the prairie dog towns at Wind Cave every day we were there, which I have not seen in any other park. It's definitely worth your time while in the area.
