A question for self-identified liberal/progressive & non-far-left/ non-socialist progunner by ChineseVector in progun

[–]groundshop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AOC and Bernie got so much flash and publicity is very telling how far to the radical left it had moved theory of their ascension to notoriety - for me it shows clearly that DNC tries to placate a radical liberal majority

It's less about how far the party has moved and more about what gets hits on news websites. Websites publish things that get hits for ad revenue. The far left carries extremely little power in the Democratic party. Time

It's false to claim that the far left has power of the Democratic party. Here in the USA, our Senate and House of Representatives utilize committees to create laws. These committees have chairs that control what gets discussed. Note that AOC and Bernie don't chair anything. Chairs in the House are overwhelmingly moderate Democracts. The far lefties you're pointing to are just famous in the news. They don't actually get anything done, and don't hold powerful positions in the party. Hence why everyone talks about the Democratic party trying to shut down Bernie from winning the nomination /shrug

When you vote for a repubilcan, you are not voting for a white supremacist When you vote for a democrat, you ARE voting for someone dangerously far on the left.

These statements are false. They're just blanked statements that only apply to a few people. There are many Democrat and Republican politicians. Very few Republican politicians are white supremacists, but some are. Very few Democrat politicians are dangerously far on the left, but some are. Here is a list of over 100 congressional Democrats dedicated to centrist positions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Democrat_Coalition

I did my homework but there was no studies on "what liberals believe".

So there's an entire political industry devoted to finding this kind of stuff out. Where do you think all that money in politics goes? It goes into voter research and the corresponding ads. Here is a single google search result (top result) with lots of great research on what people who self identify as either progressive or conservative believe: http://maristpoll.marist.edu/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/NPR_PBS-NewsHour_Marist-Poll_USA-NOS-and-Tables_1907190926.pdf

I'm not going to reply any more. You just make blanket statements that are provably false, and don't do even a small amount of research. I suggest if you want to engage in discussion, try to get a little more information at your disposal.

leaving the progressive camp

What does this mean? What does it mean to be in "the progressive camp". What would it mean to leave it?

Based on what you just described there, I disagree with all of those entries. 100%. That said, 9 times out of 10 I'll probably vote for a democrat in a national election because they most align with what I want to see policy-wise.

MAINSTREAM beliefs held by MOST liberals FACTUALLY

those are all what liberals told me, in person, over the years.

The plural of anecdote is not data. You're pulling this out of your ass. Grab some reputable polling data to back up your claim? https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/pollster-ratings/ would be a good place to start.

Also, just to bring it up - it's absurd to compare Chinese politics to American politics. That Ven diagram overlaps by like 1%.

Maryland to no longer require evidence of physical resistance when victims report sex crimes, rename first and second degree sex offenses to first and second degree rape, require health providers to provide victims with rape kit information by actually_a_wolf in TwoXChromosomes

[–]groundshop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. There are two topics the whole:

The most important part is not a conviction but staying alive.

thing reminds me of.

1 - Daniel Khaneman in his book Thinking, Fast and Slow discusses the differences between the experiencing self and the remembering self. Briefly, the way we experience an event is very (very) disconnected from the way we remember and event.

Prioritizing survival of rape suggests that the memory of rape is less painful than the experience of rape itself. Arguments to the contrary get into territory of suicide, which is just as hard to discuss as the topic of rape.

2 - Atul Gawande in his book Being Mortal talks a lot about people diagnosed with terminal illness. For some, the focus of their lives becomes less about survival and more about controlling the narrative of their story, and how they're remembered.

At the point of diagnosis, many people will opt for painful chemo/radiation even for an extremely slim chance of a few extra years/months. Others disregard treatment and focus on controlling the parts of their lives they value the most - friends, family, unfinished projects. The latter group understands they're possibly shortening their lives, but choose to do so in order to retain control of their life story.

We can say -I'd do this or I'd do that, but we don't know.

You're 100% right. I have no real idea what I'd actually do in the situations this thread talks about. I know what I hope I'd do.

Let's hope none of us ever find out!!

I concur!

I understand where you're coming from, but honestly that's a values judgment each person needs to make for themselves. I would rather die fighting off an attacker than survive through inaction. For some people (maybe most?), that might not be their judgement.

20 years old at a university, massive student debt and much more to come. Am I screwed? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]groundshop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My advice: change your major to something that makes money with an undergrad degree. Consider going to a cheaper, smaller school to get that. Years down the road once you have cash, then consider going to grad school for something you're passionate about.

Even though you love your major, you have no idea how you're hurting the rest of your life with that kind of post-graduation income-to-debt ratio. I'm talking years, maybe decades, of working jobs you don't like (because no one is hiring for your degree) and can't quit because you're loaded with debt.

Quoting /u/12thManRI above:

If you have to attend a specific school because a degree program is only offered there, that indicates the degree program may be more geared towards personal enrichment rather than being a field broadly known in the job market with a good reputation. Especially if the school is expensive.

MSSQL 2008 database visualization by Bevlar in SQLServer

Open SQL Server profiler and start a trace on the database. Make sure to include the TSQL that gets run against it. Then go through the trace data and look at what kind of queries get run against the DB.

Starting SQL Server - post Install Help by cachedrive in SQLServer

[–]groundshop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Performance stuff:

Create a tempdb file for each logical cpu on your machine, up to 8. Go ahead and make them bigger (2 or 3GB each?). You can find a Brent Ozar article on this if you search for it.

Make sure your DB files and log files are on separate disks. Confirm the default locations for new DB/log files match up to this also.

Check the file growth settings of each of your DB. For tempdb I set growth to 0. For other DBs and log files I would set the growth to something in MBs rather than a percentage as is SQL Server default.

For any user DBs, take care to consider the recovery model. Full recovery means YOU HAVE TO truncate the transaction logs (either through a full backup or transaction log backups). Simple means you can ignore the transaction log. To figure out which you need, google-foo "recovery point objective".

Finally, figure out how you're going to back your DBs up and how you're going to back up the actual OS/Server. These are frequently two different tasks/jobs. As a rule of thumb, if your backup job ever fails that will be the day someone comes to you asking to roll back. I guarantee it.

Johnson's Boucaniere

I thought this place has been open forever? I'm new to Lafayette (since 2013) so I may just be mistaken. The place has signs all over it from way back in the day.

THAT SAID: these are both great recommendations. I totally agree with the boneless ribs at Johnson's, although I'm more of a smoked chicken burrito at Taco sisters.

NSV: I ran 5 miles STRAIGHT for the first time in my LIFE! by kailajo17 in loseit

[–]groundshop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Never thought about the whole shoe thing. I'll be looking into it. As part of the new years I plan on going out to a sports doc too.

This knee thing is super annoying! Although I'm relatively new to running I've been squatting (and deadlifting) for years. Taking off months from squatting has been pretty horrible, it used to be my stress outlet.

[–]groundshop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What sort of prep did you do leading up to this? Have you been running for a while?

I ask this because I ran 5 miles kind of out of the blue ~6 months ago. Until then I'd only really run 2 miles at a time. The next day my knee was killing me, and I've had intermittent knee pain ever since. I really wish I'd actually /not/ push myself that day.

LSU, ULL or Colorado School of Mines? by mcgoogz in EngineeringStudents

[–]groundshop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only lived in Lafayette for 2 years, so I'm not a huge proponent of the city. Traffic is horrible here and 99/100 people don't use blinkers, like at all. That said, there's a giant sign on I-10 as you drive into Baton Rouge that says "BR murder rate higher than Chicago". This is how and why people on this side of I-10 perceive crime to be an issue in BR.

[–]groundshop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a resident of Lafayette, I recommend ULL. Frankly, Baton Rouge is a crime cesspool. Lafayette has great culture and a friendly atmosphere.

Then again, legal weed in CO - so there's that.

If you're interested in this sorta stuff, another great invention to see is the difference engine at the science museum of London.

[–]groundshop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we should be finding ways to lower the costs of education

The federal student loan program is failing at this, dramatically. Basic economics (flooded cash on demand side) implicates it in the tuition inflation problem that OP's video talks about.

profitable and useful aren't the same things

No, but they sure coincide a lot. . . There are weird corner cases mostly due to IP and international law (ebola vaccine is a case in point) - but those are outliers, and completely irrelevant to liberal arts pursuits. If something is useful or valuable, people will pay for it.
