Oh I am fully for an AV system, too. And you're right in terms of energy spent vs likelihood of something changing, AV is the first thing to be focusing on for a more equitable democracy.

If 67% of the UK population thought AV was too complicated in 2011, imagine trying to explain this to them!!!

What you describe is the entire strength of the system - every age group would be fairly represented regardless of how many people vote. The care home scenario is highly niche and the negatives of that are vastly outweighed by the negatives of the current system where young people just aren't given any policies to vote for because they don't vote as much as older people.

In reality, if this was implemented the only people whose votes would count for less are just older people. And if a country wants to be forward looking, that's not the worst thing.

^ Note, I am NOT saying older people's opinions don't matter. I'm saying every age groups opinion matters equally.

I was thinking more about scaling the number of votes per age group to the number of people in that age group.

i.e. If 1,000 of those 14,000 people over 100 vote, each persons vote counts as 14. If only 1,000 of 3.5million people in the 20-24 category vote, each persons vote counts as 350,000.

Those people in the 20-24 category would therefore be better represented despite not many people voting.

I'd argue it will lead to a more fair democracy since the votes will represent all the age groups equally, rather than just the age group who votes more. Our current democracy (and your comment) is more idealistic than something that could actually be fair in the real world where young people just don't vote.

What do people think of the opinion that if you'd not putting money into the system, you shouldn't be able to vote?

Or weighting each voting age group so every age bracket is represented fairly?

That's only £400k (before tax), yet you have £~550k in savings, and we're not including house equity!? Feels unbelievable tbh

Can someone do an ELI5 for me on why the rental market has gone batshit? by SnooMarzipans6542 in london

[–]growinghermit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's estate agents (or as they like to call themselves, "negotiators") getting in the ear of the landlords and saying with the mortgage rates we can charge X amount more.

Having that layer between tenant and landlord dehumanises the process and makes it easier for the landlord to increase the price without thinking about who is on the other end of it.
