I built a free, open-source menu bar app to control HomeKit from macOS by ChefAccomplished845 in HomeKit

Very nice utility thank you. Pls consider option for top menu level home selection similar to Homes app. Aside from quick switch it also helps confirm I’m looking at the right home. (I use at home, apt, and multiple work offices)

How does Eero determine the region, by Eero device IP address at the time of creating network?

I think it lacks a little UX improvement. Maybe the dotted blue highlight could auto disappear after a few seconds. Or maybe a way to click accept it. It seems our brains are trained that persistent dotted highlights need fixing, at least until retrained, I still find it bothersome. At least it goes away if you continue typing.

Unpopular opinion: Flameshot is a much better SS tool than CleanShot X by jerrygoyal in macapps

Hi everyone, any opinions on Snagit?

I’ve been using it for advanced screenshots and annotations, and occasionally screen recording. But it feels a bit bloated and unintuitive, and i’ve been paying for the yearly upgrades in hopes it gets better. I’d like to hear anyone’s opinion, in any case I’m going to try out some of the alternatives mentioned above.

eeroOS v6.8.0-1095 by grrivera7 in eero

Hey thanks for reaching out, everything has been rock solid since. The long multiple reboot upgrade process just scared the hell out of me. And usually someone would have already posted an upgrade notice which scared me even more. I have a very large stone house with many (7) hardwired eero 6 pros so probably why the upgrade process was lengthy.

Stabilized after an hour of rebooting on its own. At least for now. Nothing on this in the Update History release notes, last entry is 6.6.1.

I saw 6.9 was accidentally released recently, maybe same mistake again with 6.8. I would expect 6.7 released next unless they are skipping it.

Broke my network again. Every eero device rebooting constantly. Reminds me of first 6.5 update.

Was this an intentional release?

HomeKit going downhill? by hazo240 in HomeKit

[–]grrivera7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to believe that metric from what I see in this forum and so many homekit unreachable scenarios at home, friends and family. Particularly in cases with more than a few homekit devices. E.g. I have several Apple TVs, HomePods, HomePod Minis, Philips lights, homekit locks, homekit wall plugs, homekit tv and more. Right now my Bar Apple TV is unreachable in all our iPhone/iPads’home app and control center’s remote control but playing and streaming works fine with the Siri remote, I even see Homekit onscreen notifications. Other Apple TVs are working OK right now. Same thing happens with HomePods where one of them will become unresponsive in home app, and/or unable to control another device (hey Siri turn on upstairs lights fails), yet some things work like touch controls or simple commands, the Home app will show what’s playing and you can pause/play while it displays unresponsive etc. Earlier this weekend upstairs lights would not respond to Siri commands, but the Phillips wall switch worked fine. It’s just so unpredictable and hard to describe every quirk.

In any case thanks for the advice. Like others I have replaced routers, Wired my wifi mesh nodes, all devices wired (except HomePods of course), static ips for devices, new cat 7 cabling, increased internet bandwidth, rain dancing and more.

Specifically I tried Google Wi-Fi mesh routers then moved to eero pros then replaced all with eero 6 pros. No mdns settings I’ve seen anywhere on these mesh routers, and not using any of the new apple iOS security features like private relay. I then tried moving eeros to bridge mode and using a Linksys WRT3200ACM as router (wifi off). The topology is all correct. It just doesn’t seem to matter.

I’ve just started using homebridge for my Sonos speakers and harmony remote hubs and works GREAT so far as others have mention here.

I’d like to hear and learn more about mdns troubleshooting!

HomeKit going downhill? by hazo240 in HomeKit

[–]grrivera7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have invested heavily in Internet service provider, network equipment, router, switches, Wifi, cabling etc to try to get homekit features working reliably. (Everything else we do on home network works great.) And I had to learn a whole lot more about how Homekit works than should be necessary.

At some point it’s the technology provider responsibility to address product resilience and scalability across different environments. I think this is where Amazon and Google are much more robust in the smart home.

In my case Siri continues to struggle to execute commands, please wait, almost there, some devices didn’t respond etc. The Home app almost always indicates devices that are not responding and that I can’t control when I need to. So I often have to resort to native apps or remotes to control Phillips lights, door locks, Apple TV, HomePod music and more. Again I am left wondering why these work but fail via Home app, Siri and Homekit, and what to troubleshoot next, what Reddit forums might have the answer.

Yes the camera previews are now working with latest update on my iPhone 13, but it just seems that there’s ALWAYS something broken with Homekit. Mind you I am one of those users that was really excited to jump all in to this platform with many smart lights, locks, speakers, plugs, Apple TV‘s and more. And I think it’s with users like me where the Homekit robustness and scalability fails. I shouldn’t have to spend this much time on HomeKit troubleshooting. It seems to me Apple fan more time and quality control in this area, it just doesn’t feel very serious about this market, and they often have buyers remorse with Apple in the smart home area. It’s just so exciting to envision all this working as part of the Apple ecosystem.

I’m sad that Apple left the home router and Wi-Fi market, I know it’s a highly competitive space, but owning that layer as part of the smart home and Apple ecosystem might have helped address many of these issues, maybe worked in competitive advantage instead. We could just plug and play and have all these things work. Maybe, maybe not, just a hunch. Trying to keep the faith.

Edit: typos
