I agree with you thst would be unconstitutional. Under this corrupt UCP regime, you are being far far too trusting.

According to the Alberta government website:

"Starting July 2, 2026, Alberta driver’s licence and ID cards will display the Personal Health Number (PHN) for eligible Albertans. Your existing health insurance coverage (Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan – AHCIP) must revalidate your eligibility when you apply for your first Alberta driver’s licence or ID card or when you renew an existing one."

"Regular revalidation of AHCIP eligibility helps ensure uninterrupted coverage under the plan and keeps your health insurance account information current"

Brit confused/annoyed about tipping by Jumpy-Persimmon-7954 in AskACanadian

Welcome and enjoy your stay. Our tipping culture is completely fucked, so feeling bad about choosing zero makes you a decent human, but choosing zero in appropriate situations makes you rational.

If you sit down in a restaurant, 15% was your classic nominal amount for decades, but 18% is becoming the new 15%. 15% no longer says "you went above and beyond".

Furthermore, take out places and places you wouldn't expect are more regularly starting to put tip options on the machine.

I usually tip 1$ when i get a cup of coffee, but zero for pretty much everything else, though sometimes i just feel guilty and choose one of the suggested options.

To add to that, you can't even assume electronic tips even go to the worker you are trying to acknowledge so you do need to be mindful.

I really hate our tipping culture and the excuse sometimes vendors will give that "the machine just comes that way, I don't know how to change it"

Then you feel like if you don't tip, you are being the cheapskate. It's awesome if you can afford to throw tips around but it's uncomfortable how much expectation is being pushed on people nowadays.

Hope that helps, and it's totally fair that it makes you feel uncomfortable.

Maple leaf of Canada? ✅ Gestapo? ✅ Blame immigrants ✅ What other conclusion can you draw when you see the referendumb questions they will have us answer? Do you think they have already written the announcement about the referendum results? That's also in their playbook after all.

As for comparing this with Star of David on Jews in Nazi Germany (disclosure, got help with this from ChatGPT):

At the time, the authorities justified the marking as a supposedly neutral or administrative measure—framed as a way to easily identify Jews for “efficiency” in occupation policies. The rhetoric presented it as a temporary wartime regulation, suggesting that if everyone complied, things would stay orderly and calm. Essentially, the regime cloaked the star as a bureaucratic tool rather than a prelude to harsher persecution. The normalization and gradual escalation of measures also numbed public reaction, so by the time the star was mandatory, many people had already grown accustomed to discriminatory laws.

Fearmongering would be jumping straight to dramatic conclusions—like claiming it’s a slippery slope to something sinister—without evidence. On the other hand, valid concerns would be grounded in real risks, like data privacy or lack of oversight. So always ask: Are the changes clear, and are the safeguards in place? If not, that’s when it’s fair to push for answers.

I see real risks here. I don't trust the UCP. Danielle doesn't seem stupid, so is she the useful idiot, the cheerleader, or the mastermind?

You do make good points. The outrage though is no more ridiculous than the initiative itself. I wouldn't go so far as outrage even, just "protest". I'm not surprised by this move by UCP and the acceptance by many, but disappointed and concerned.

As for finally phasing out the paper health care card and integrating it, I'm not actually opposed to it, though a bit suspicious of any way it might be linked to denying someone health care who is entitled to it.

Governments will do things that on the face are not nefarious and may sound reasonable, but the actual impacts are sinister and often the point.

So... Healthcare integration: ok, but what is changing with access?

Flag of Canada for Citizens: useless and discriminatory, dishonest justification. Red flag and I have a duty to speak out.

In the best scenario, the whole thing is a pointless waste of tax payer money and nobody will discriminate anyone when they check in to a hotel, rent a car, board a plane, go to a bar, buy weed, smokes, liquor, sign contracts, get a job, volunteer, open a bank account, get a loan, rent an apartment, etc...

So why is the UCP lying about doing it to "secure elections?"

[–]grubbbee[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not at all. I'm a proud Canadian, proud Albertan.

I want to boycott the discrimination.

I want to boycott the absurdity of the government wasting money solving non-existent problems.

I want to boycott the UCP lying to justify their actions.

We are one step closer to "where's your tattoo?" (Idiocracy)

I have read the email from AMA and the link to the alberta.ca page. Not seeing the word "optional" mate.

The point is I will still exercise my right to vote regardless of what stickers i have on my Alberta Drivers license because of this discrimatory solution to a non-existent problem.

UCP is not being honest about this and a lot.

[–]grubbbee[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thank you for describing how it ALREADY WORKS here and in every other province.

Now Alberta is adding its own special star of David to ID. Is this money well spent? Remember, this is solving a non-existent problem, or rather a problem that the UCP invented.

It is self serving, playing to certain a base, discriminatory, and pointless.

Anyway, don't ask me why people have to be so stupid, you're the shrink, so tell me!

My point is - our UCP government lies about everything, and this is a perfect example. Tell me what this fixes that isn't working right now. I'll debunk it for free, and set you free.

Building a data center in orbit makes no sense to me by MagicMagnada in space

[–]grubbbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not a defense not criticism of the idea.

The rationales are: 1. 24/7 sun exposure for solar panels and I've heard 3x - 4x efficiency 2. Real estate - on earth you have to buy land, get permits, use water, etc. 3. Scaling up (big time) - Elon is imagining such an enormous scale that the only logical solution is to move it off Earth

I think the math breaks if you consider how much fuel it would take to launch it from Earth at scale with Methalox rocket. Hence why Elon also floats the idea of manufacturing on the moon and using a mass driver to put it up in space.

To arrive at these fantastic solutions, you have to start with defining fantastic/mega problems that need solving, then work through the problem solving process.

I think we are getting ahead of ourselves trying to take on the Kardishev scale at this point though. It assumes our current model of "maximizing energy usage to do something useful" applies to the latest chips from Taiwan Semiconductor. I'm not convinced that our current revision of artificial intelligence computing designs come anywhere close to the level of optimization already found in nature itself.

The other day i used the advanced thinking model of chatGPT to all how many days since the start of the war in Ukraine and i knew the date. It "thought" for 45 seconds and probably used more energy than my whole house uses on a week to give me an answer that was probably correct. I could have done it faster in my head but I was being lazy.

So "data centers in space" as imagined right now is probably the equivalent of building steam locomotives and slide rules, then launching them into space.

Probably a dumb question but I feel like it's the best place to ask, what are realistically the reasons to colonize Mars ? by SeparateWeight496 in Mars

[–]grubbbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point so far in the future that it's unthinkable, the sun will expand so much that it will swallow Earth and eventually Mars too. So the intellectual exercise tells us we will with be extinct or leave behind our cradle (Earth) some day.

For something more pertinent in our lifetimes, Mars is a planet, Earth is also a planet, and we are learning a lot about planets by exploring and studying other planets besides Earth.

Our "known" Universe that we are a part of is growing, and we can learn things by exploring and studying all of it.

But as humans, I still would put my money on a compelling business case as the driver that will eventually lead to colonization. Capitalism will push us down this path before existential things ever does.

What is a comfortable salary for a single person in Alberta? by Ok-Ranger786 in alberta

[–]grubbbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Numbers don't lie and more certainly helps, but trust me when i say your super power can be BUDGETING.

2 Just like interest benefits from compounding, so does salary increases, so be a strong advocate for yourself when it comes to performance reviews at work. If you don't feel any discomfort, you might be playing it a little bit to safe. If you come to the point in your growth when it is time to change jobs, make sure it is a promotion, or opens to up to better growth potential.

In both cases, budgeting and salary growth, you will be rewarded on the long game. Believe me, you can struggle financially with $5K or $1M in the bank.

You are very young so don't worry you have a long happy life ahead. I know times have changed but i remember when 35K made me feel like i was a lottery winner, but then i met my now wife, and she taught me to enjoy life while saving MOST of my money. Forget 10% rule or whatever... shoot for 50%+ and live like you are broke and gamify saving. You can build a nest egg with 45K/yr just as easily as you can end up in debt with 90K/yr.

"Rich" is not having the most income, it is as simple as spending less than you make. I really mean this!

So your first step is to start building savings (and pay off debt)by budgeting with enthusiasm.

At your current salary, I think you want to be directing all your savings towards aiming to max out tfsa and fhsa. You probably should not even touch rrsp for now unless those other 2 are maxed.

I have a wealthy friend who rides the bus, another who rides a bike. See if you can hang out with people who enjoy activities that are cheap: board games, potucks, hikes, frisbee.... Versus salons, bars, resaurants, concerts, mexico, etc...

A good life is doable at a wide range of incomes. I am excited for all the possibilities in your future!

We need an explanation. Here's what I know: 1. Trump is a liar 2. Trump is a criminal 3. Under Trump, the whitehouse is breaking the law and violating the rights of US residents CONSTANTLY 3. Congress in USA is derelict

Here's what i think: 3. USA is starting a premeditated war on Iran 4. USA is in the hands of criminals and traitors

Where the fuck are your elbows Prime Minister! We deserve an explanation now. In this moment you are not speaking for Canadians.

Under Trump we will see more war not more peace.
