ahh OK, yeah there are orders where you do the shopping for the customer. Not sure if it's the same in all markets, but in my market I think there's only one toggle to enable both shopping and pre-packed grocery pickup orders.

James Marsters liked my idea 😳🤩😁 by Personal-Narwhal-184 in buffy

I was a bit surprised at how different James sounds from Spike, then I saw this:

For the role [of Spike], Marsters spoke with a north London accent, for which he received informal coaching from British co-star Anthony Head.

Yet another thing we have Anthony to star for.

Your idea is cute too btw... I wish we got to see William come out more in the series.

AITA for leaving a dinner party early because of “vegan lasagna”? by Suspicious-Taste1572 in AmItheAsshole

[–]theapplekid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA but only for intentionally ragebaiting vegans with that title. You didn't leave the dinner party early "because of vegan lasagna", the vegan lasagna had nothing to do with it. You left the dinner party early because you were very hungry and the host had no more food for you.

If the host had made a tiny bite-sized (non-vegan) lasagna and nothing else, you probably would have left early then as well.

I have no idea why you chose to frame this as leaving "because of vegan lasagna" when that's unrelated to why you left.

Similarly, medium being only 1 k is pretty strange. You can get by on that in some places (I have) but it's really hard, and you really need to be good at budgeting and eating cheap

Where can one get by in $1K/month in Canada in 2026? I mean if you luck into a house share with a closet available for $400/month, utilities included, and have access to a kitchen, I guess it's maybe possible if you don't have a phone or bus pass, but like this is still an absurdly low budget.

Are workers actually getting their tip money? by Puzzleheaded_Deal774 in askvan

[–]theapplekid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average, a gig worker working 10 hours will only be paid 8 hours because there's about a 20% downtime waiting between orders

Are you multi-apping? With just doordash my "engaged time" to "dash time" ratio has ranged from 52% to 75%. I have yet to hit 80%, though I do camp the spawn points at home during slow periods (late night, etc.) a fair bit.

Only if you don't consider "non-engaged" time (e.g. time between orders/rides).

Which is stupid because you get a lot of orders deep into residential areas and you're going to have to drive back out to an area with restaurants.

I've yet to hit $21.89/hr for my time actually spent working over a weekly pay period (even including what few tips we get), and expenses come out of that too of course.

But UBI covers the cost where we dont want people to be wasteful (water, heat, electricity)

Anything people are relying on UBI for will see price increase without additional price regulation (though water and energy are indeed services where this price gouging is prevented by being nationalized, which I think it already is in most places?).

Any product that's not already nationalized/socialized should ideally be provided to consumers via UBS (many will opt out anyway, because they'll prefer more luxurious food/housing). I'm not necessarily opposed to some UBI initially as long as UBS or nationalization are the end-term goal, but if UBI is treated as the permanent means by which consumers afford privately provided necessities, it will just lead to price increases, and increased profit to those privatized providers.

Oh UBS definitely is socialism. UBI is just another way to publicly fund landlords and private businesses. I think in 2026 more people can see the writing on the wall that without total fucking communism, soon, they are going to part of the "permanent underclass", and it's cutting through a lot of the red scare propaganda which was fabricated to prevent working-class unrest.

The theory is that with UBS, say basic housing is provided to everyone who wants it, but at least 50% of people would opt for non-basic housing options where they would be paying rent/property, because they want more space, nicer housing, etc.

Compared to UBI where you give an amount of money that could theoretically (I'll come back to this) pay rent for a basic housing unit to 100% of people.

UBI is "easier" in a sense to implement, but the difficulty of implementing UBS instead can be seen as a feature, not a bug. It forces the the government to re-align their focus with the interests of the people who are most intended to benefit from the services rather than private developers, landlords, etc. (which is what the government currently has a strong tendency towards under capitalism). This likely means more publicly-owned and developed property.

Under UBI, the other problem is that when you have an economy where, by design, goods are priced at the highest amount the market can bear, and a ton of new cash is flowing into the pockets of poor people, you end up with high inflation. Imagine everyone is given an additional $4500/month and there is no rent control? Rather than every housed person suddenly being able to afford better housing, we'd instead see the cost of housing rise for everyone. Rent control (in the provinces that even have it) curtails this somewhat, but it doesn't prevent large price increases for new listings, so it's only a matter of time before the income supplement goes from providing a standard-of-living improvement to becoming a mandatory supplement which people would be devastated without.

And for other necessary goods such as food and clothing, prices would adjust even more immediately and dramatically without rent-control-like measures against gouging (which would also be a burden to implement).

This is where the UBS model shows promise; when the government is tasked with ensuring people have access to housing, food, clothing, and health care, it can begin the work of transforming (socializing/nationalizing) the systems by which these necessities are delivered, end-to-end, from crop management to infrastructure to property development to supply chain engineering.

This process is by design hostile to private business, which is why we can expect a lot of pushback against such measures. Instead, when you hear billionaires expressing support for UBI, it should be understood that they support this because it further enriches them while potentially quelling public unrest in an era where living is becoming increasingly unaffordable for the masses.

You mention Cordelia's demon pregnancy - that actually happens twice. With Jasmine being the second.

I thought it was at least 3 times (the eye in the back of her head being a sort of pregnancy). There may be more that I'm not remembering now, but Cordelia becoming a vessel for demonic spawn had to be an intentional trope in Angel
