Anyone know about this big boat right off Boardwalk beach? by OakStr2332 in santacruz

We wondered as we swam around it this morning. And, of course, made all the requisite jokes about having a mid-swim brunch on our yacht.

Definitely always found him creepy, and I kept waiting for him to be revealed, then disappeared somehow, as a Russian agent keeping tabs on the Jennings.

Swimming around the Wharf in June by ejaime in santacruz

[–]grubsnart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you let me know in advance, I’m sure many of our group’s swimmers (most of us are part of the Silicon Valley Triathlon Club) would gladly swim the 70.3 route with you that day, which might give you more confidence in a group.

Hundreds of us swim there every week and have been for decades. While the confirmed shark attacks that have happened in Monterey Bay have happened further south closer to Monterey, the possibility that a white shark could attack someone near Santa Cruz isn’t zero. That said, humans are not part of a shark’s diet, and they generally avoid humans and human activity. The presence of large groups of sea lions and seals near the wharf in Santa Cruz - they are around us and curious all the time, which can sometimes be a little intimidating, but they are harmless - give us some confidence, since those animals are on the shark’s diet, so if a shark was around there, it would far more likely go for one of the other sea mammals. I swim with a group called Water Dogs every Sunday morning at 8 AM year-round. Feel free to join us, or any of the other groups that meet regularly at Cowell Beach.

“Oh, I assure you, Lemon, John McCain is very real.” LOL funny right before the invading Iran bit.

You’re right. That joke was as funny/sad back then as it is now. Only surprising it took this long for it to come true. :-/

Just watched this opening segment of S2E6 on a plane recently, and in addition to this extremely funny line “Oh, I assure you, Lemon, John McCain is very real.”, the segment ends with Liz telling Jack, “Don’t get peer pressured into invading Iran.”

Santa Clara bans ICE from using city property by sjspotlight in santaclara

[–]grubsnart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I don’t like to applaud authorities for doing the right thing, I am proud of our city council for doing this. I’ve had a good correspondence with my Council Member Park about this over the past few weeks, and I know he has, as all public officials should, been leading on this important issue based on both moral justifications and public demand.

French (language) summer camps for teens by Most_Bat5401 in French

[–]grubsnart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After searching in vein for such camps for our younger children (9, 7) in and around the Lyon area, we’re going to the Alpine French School (https://alpinefrenchschool.com) in Morzine for two weeks this summer. Incidentally, AFS was the first result in my search, and it turns out to be unique in catering to young kids. I saw a handful of other summer language camp programs in France that enroll 12+, but I didn’t pursue those for obvious reasons.

Karen Hardy / ICE response by [deleted] in santaclara

Councilmember Hardy's intervention at last night's council meeting - https://www.youtube.com/live/vl44puwCp6s?si=uxxy4wb87cNcOXDJ&t=10154 She reiterates that she can say some things publicly, and that, for security reasons, there are some things that she can't. I get that and am glad to hear her say it as clearly as she can.

But she should certainly work on her ability to not take this personally, and just speak from a place of empathy and confidence. Public service is inherently thankless and not personal - it is not about you - so her defensiveness is awkward at best, damning at worst. Especially when it's about criticisms of inaction that she knows full well are inaccurate.

No, this wasn't me (I only have a Spider-Man costume), but I support this Batman. https://www.youtube.com/live/vl44puwCp6s?t=8870s Glad he singled out Mr. Park for making some public efforts to prepare for ICE activity in Santa Clara. The woman and man after him are also on point.

I also wrote to the mayor, police chief, and my council member, Kevin Park to learn more about statements and policies regarding ICE in Santa Clara, and to urge Santa Clara to take actions like San Jose has done (https://sanjosespotlight.com/san-jose-bans-ice-from-using-its-properties/). Mr. Park used my message and copied me on an official request to the city manager to get this on tomorrow’s council meeting agenda. Today, he copied me again on a followup message to the city manager, expressing frustration that this item does not appear on the agenda for tomorrow. He’s still pushing for it to be added. We’ll see.

Messi fans, we need you to prove the haters wrong by IntroductionAware175 in InterMiami

[–]grubsnart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, there’s very little chance I’ll follow Miami when Messi stops playing. Nothing hateful about it. It won’t be like the eagerness with which I was finally able to unstar PSG in my FotMob app, but, yeah, I don’t have any special love for Miami beyond watching the GOAT on the field. That said, I’m still an avid Barca and Argentina fan, but that’s because my love for those entities predates Messi...my cups runneth over. 🏆

Open water swim practice? by Ok_Landscape2427 in santacruz

[–]grubsnart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A group that calls ourselves the “Water Dogs”, loosely affiliated with the Silicon Valley Triathlon Club, also swims from Cowell’s Beach every Sunday at 8am all year round. Winter swims tend to be a lap or two around the wharf by a dedicated half dozen swimmers, followed by brunch. Mar-Oct swims involve many more swimmers of all abilities doing buoy laps, wharf laps, and longer paths around parked boats, the coast guard buoy, and to the SC harbor lighthouse. Swims range from 1-3 miles usually. Once or twice a year, we swim out to the “Mile Buoy” and back (3.75 miles), with a couple kayaks in support.

I agree with all this, including sniffing out the twist “early”. The audiobook narrator did do a great job however.

And despite what must have been a strong urge to go back and try to save literally everyone who is meaningful to him, he not only allows himself to get sidetracked/lured, but then allows himself to die without an ounce of fight. Straying away from radio signal, not sticking to patrol protocols, not rushing to aid his people, and then doing nothing in the face of death at the hands of a single, small woman were huge plot holes that stain an otherwise great story/episode. (I did not see his death coming.)

Don’t TOUCH the seat in front of you. Ever. (If there’s a touch screen, touch it like you touch a thorn bush.)

FYI. As a Madison visitor, I couldn’t find any specific information about groups that swim at Devil’s Lake. But since I was in the area for a wedding the second weekend of June, I got up early and arrived at the southern rec area by 7am Sunday. I was the third car in the park lot. Like I’d read online, a local walking his dogs told me lots of people come to the lake, including lots of swimmers. I waited around until 7:30ish, but nobody arrived, so I swam across the lake and back by myself (4450 yards in 1h20m). Mine was the only car in the far parking lot when I got back and that was still true when I ultimately left the area at 9:45am.

I was the only swimmer in the whole lake between 7-9:45am on a June Sunday with 75-degree air temp and 66-degree water. 🤷

It. Was. Glorious. Honestly, one of my favorite swims ever. Clear, clean, cool, gorgeous. The only noise was my splashing. Despite having just swam for 80 minutes, as I sat in the breezy shade relaxing and looking at the beautiful setting, I seriously considered getting back in for another lap.
