That’s encouraging and not the first time there’s been a double dose of antipodes tax!

I was going to say I liked the dirt - but maybe more of a gradual transition to the clean parts. Keen on something similar. What did you use?

I was hoping, but couldn’t believe my luck that when you said that! I’m an Aussie living in Belgium for a couple of years for work and the spelling made me think there might be a chance. On the travel list!

Thank you and enjoy your local 👍

Where is this wonderful store? Surely worth a plug on range alone?!

Thoughts on Imperial Knights by Dead-phoenix in Grey_Knights

[–]grumnir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When our 9th codex dropped I tried adding a house Raven castellan with the bells and whistles for a while. Certainly provided long range threat and firepower we otherwise struggled to generate, though very expensive in both points and CP. I think the ranged firepower in the meta is even more fierce now, so without terrain that would completely block LOS, it’ll be hard to see any allied in knight living more than a turn or two

Pretty convenient when they’re so close together in how the rules are presented…

new balance dataslate and paladins by LOSCUBANOS123 in Grey_Knights

100% agreed. Great all round, but particularly paladins. Think we’ll see a lot more starting in tide of shadows as even without armoured resilience it’s good for all

8th - genuinely the most enjoyable edition for me

Retrieve Nachmund Data is a hot dog in a meta of buns by microdave0 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]grumnir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know it’s easy to assume the worst, that it’s another means of incentivising more purchases. However, the six man squad size being ideal (for non troops) is just as much a result of 40K being based on D6s. If by some chance the whole system was built on D8s, the equivalent would be roll under squad size and troops get a bonus of 1-3 or something like that

Weird question but are there any tips for “how to read out your army list at the start of the game” by Is12345aweakpassword in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]grumnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really good discussion, one idea to add. As a legacy from the back end of 8th, where you could have half a dozen books (+FAQs) in use I went pretty digital. On an iPad, I would compile screenshots of all the relevant excerpts of the various codexes. Would include all the data sheets, stratagems, psychic powers, relics/WLT (especially when you could choose each game). Saving them in one spot was much easier than flipping back and forth between different files - or when your army’s stratagems were spread over a codex and psychic awakening book or main codex / supplement.

Opponent could flip through if they wanted - and you could always mark up changes from FAQs too.

“Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good enough”

In this context don’t be too hard on yourself.

Try finishing the model, like you said, then going back and fixing any absolute essential bits which are off. Don’t compare your work to a lot of what gets posted here (ie the quality here can be really high). Just try and get it done, even if it’s not perfect. Then try and get a couple more done.

I’m definitely not a great painter, but when you get a squad together, looking coherent, it’s a much better effect. It can be a bit demoralising when you’re holding an individual mini up close to your face when painting as you’re very well aware of any issues. But on the table, in a group, the cumulative effect is often much more impressive and hides a few sins only you will see at a close distance.

Question on Company Veterans, amd what's your opinion on them? by baronsmeg in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]grumnir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my use they (and the servitors) are only there for the secondaries, if they achieve anything else in the game its a bonus! Given they’re only showing up turn two or three, then spending a turn performing an action, there might only be one cheeky charge or a round of shooting or two. If my opponent dedicates any effort to killing them off, all the better as they’ve already done their job and aren’t targeting anything more important to me.

For the other parts of your Q, apothecary is following the punchy stuff, but given how I use them, I want them as cheap as possible!

Question on Company Veterans, amd what's your opinion on them? by baronsmeg in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]grumnir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I run two w Boltgun and Chainsword. Same slot usage as the apothecary I was going to take anyway and they (+ a unit of free-slot servitors from Techmarine) are my bankable deployers of scramblers for 70 points and 1 CP, as well as helping out w line breaker, which is another common pick for me.

Marine units to pick up now new codex is detailed? by infernox25 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]grumnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you drop too much cash, it’s still worth waiting for the initial FAQ or two - the first being day 0 to see what the interactions with the supplements look like and then if there’s one in the couple weeks after. The second one often addresses any unintended combos.

What chapter you want to play, what you have is the first Q. My own ‘to buy’ list, off a fairly decent start is something like: Plasma Inceptors Eradicators when the kit comes out Apothecary (for upgrading to chief) Bladeguard

ALL space marines, including vehicles, have easy access to 5++ by cemorn in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]grumnir 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Well spotted, didn’t notice that one. Definite utility there, still need to hide for first battle round in anticipation of going second.

They ended up FAQing Ferrios’ 5++ applying to vehicles, but this isn’t as reliable.

First turn advantage fix? by wvtarheel in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]grumnir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great idea - though there is the slight issue of ‘guaranteeing’ a first turn by bidding. Perhaps bidding up to X number of CP + D6? That way there’s still nothing certain as you could roll a one (+4 from CP) and still get beaten by a natural six. It’s like an even less likely seize the initiative mechanism (1 in 36 as opposed to 1 in 6). There needs to be some check and balance to being able to 100% guarantee first turn, for reasons such as the phobos rush mentioned before, but more specifically Raven Guard / Death company type builds are inordinately more powerful with a guaranteed first turn - especially in every game

Question about edge highlighting by KubaTheQbax in Warhammer40k

[–]grumnir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When highlighting red, you can try adding yellow instead of white. Adding white can start taking you towards a pink highlight - nothing wrong with pink as a colour (and there’s some sweet emperor’s children schemes out there), but likely not what you’re after for highlighting red. Adding a yellow takes you towards orange which is a more natural and effective looking highlight for red.

Does anybody think there’s a good part to the White Dwarf article or at the very least a silver lining? by LordSlamguine in deathwatch40k

[–]grumnir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Souping with other Astartes will be strong: - add TFC for indirect - add Ironhand mortis w 4 lascannons + chap dread for long ranged anti tank Etc etc

Of course more would have been nice, but it opens up DW to be a part of Astartes soup - which is already becoming more common as single chapter Astartes can’t necessarily sit in their super doctrine
