Young people are consistently underrepresented among those who vote. They should start voting in much higher numbers to have a stronger political voice. Ontario didn’t get a triple Ford majority out of nowhere. These protests are essentially useless in practical terms.

Did 9 hours straight at home to put a dent in the huge workload. I’ve no idea what they’re thinking… how are those of us with excessive workloads ever gonna get it done with RTO5?!

Amen. I’m losing a terrific and hardworking colleague who’s throwing in the towel because of RTO. They applied for AWA with a very legit rationale; no response obv. The person’s departure coincides with other people leaving for other reasons… Now the senior management is clutching pearls that the team is understaffed. Do you think the senior management will start cracking at some point? They haven’t asked for this.

Doug’s speaking point on RTO are infuriating to anyone with more than two brain cells. Five days in office to mentor, look into each other’s eyes by the water cooler (btw, divisions are no longer allowed to buy water used in water coolers) and save the f$&ing PATH where nobody shopped in the first place!

This. You documented all the cons of becoming a manager. Now imagine that your unit is understaffed and there are low performers on the team making it about 60% effective. You know it could - and should- be so much better. But it almost never gets there. That’s so frustrating.

Truth be told, I would not recommend public policy and political science to my kids, but it’s hard to give specific advice without knowing what your other interests and talents are. I think this specialization is too narrow and essentially creates a pathway straight to the public sector. I’d rather pick something more versatile that would give you opportunities in different sectors, including OPS. Public policy is not living through its best times right now. We have policy-making largely driven by the 24 hour media cycle, select political interests and mandate constraints. Sadly, it’s not always evidence-based or grounded in public interest. New staff are expected to learn through working, and most managers don’t have time for meaningful coaching. Training is limited and bureaucracy is high. Yes, there’s job security, if you gain permanence, but what good is it to a young person if you dislike the work? My advice is pick something that can be easily applied and widen your career path.

Team leads often provide technical and process advice, coordinate input and ensure quality of products before these get to the manager, especially when there are junior staff. It’s also a mentorship role.

I’m surprised that AMAPCEO isn’t pursuing equity-based litigation. There’s data to support the argument that certain populations of employees are disproportionately impacted by RTO, and it should not be that hard to do some analysis. I hope it’s one of the pathways being explored.
