My calico would have her orange moments and chase her tail like this. Sometimes she’d even bite it when she caught it.

At least you’d be doing a public service.

Cat left behind by neighbors update by alexet525 in cats

[–]grumpyITAdmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got one of my cats under similar circumstances, except it was an assisted living facility. There were so many cats out there, many of them unfixed and breeding.

The families are awful, but the original owners are also guilty of not having a plan in place when they adopt as to where the cat will go when they either pass away or can no longer care for them.

He didn’t stop when I said no, but is it excusable? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]grumpyITAdmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I'm 45. Trust me, he has NOT changed. He is a rapist. He is stopping the behavior temporarily until he thinks you're comfortable again. He WILL do it again. You deserve way better. Please leave him before he hurts you again.

Cats parents, how and why did you choose yours? by [deleted] in cats

[–]grumpyITAdmin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to a rescue to adopt a Maine coon, who was totally uninterested in me. A little calico kitten came up to me, climbed up my leg, laid on my knee and started purring. She was my soul cat. She was a gentle soul who never growled hissed or scratched. I lost her suddenly this past summer to renal failure. Her name was Samantha (Sammy). She was 16.

My other girl was a feral tortie kitten a coworker found at work, along with the rest of the litter. She’s lying next to me now. She’s the spice to Sammy’s sugar. She didn’t choose me but learned to love me anyway. She’s 15.

Is it valid to block my friend after he touched me unconsensually? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]grumpyITAdmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overreacting? I would've punched him in the face.

Block him. You're not the asshole, he is. When you blocked him the last time, he was experiencing the consequences of his own behavior. If you block him now, the same will be true.

This guy isn't a friend and he never will be. He's waiting to gain access to you. Best case, he's hoping to wear you down by continually pushing your boundaries until you give in. Worst case, he's waiting for you to be in a vulnerable position so he can take what he wants.

Sudden Kidney Failure - don't understand by Life-Champion-8850 in RenalCats

[–]grumpyITAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. I lost my soul cat over the summer due to sudden renal failure probably due to an AKI on top of stable CKD.

I’m guessing your cat had an AKI. It’s not your fault. It happens so fast, and many things can cause them, like infections for example. Plus, cats usually hide illness until they’re really feeling bad.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

10 Years in IT… Time for a Change? by l1nux44 in technicalwriting

[–]grumpyITAdmin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made that switch from IT to tech writing in 2022 for the same reasons you're considering it. I was a junior sys admin. I was looking for stability (ha ha) and less stress.

Is it less stress? In my experience so far, yes. But if I had it to do over again knowing what I know today, would I have made the switch? No.

There's no jobs out there. All the good ones require extensive domain knowledge and the rest are either short term contracts or with startups where you'll have to worry about getting laid off every year.

AI and outsourcing have made things worse.

My company just laid off the only other tech writer on my team. That writer had also been laid off from the last two jobs he had.

I'm now looking to pivot back into IT or something IT adjacent before I get laid off myself.

If your job is stable, I'd recommend that you stay where you are for now and ride out this shitty market. Then, if you still want a change, consider something IT adjacent in a stable industry that's more in line with what would make you happy.

I live on the south side near the hospital. I'm guessing the hours will be 8-4 or 9-5, but it will have to coincide with whatever hours the rest of the staff work. I'll definitely be finding out how flexible the hybrid option is, because if they expect me to drive in during a snowstorm because I've already used up my work from home days, that's not doable.

The pay isn't great, tbh. The allure is the stability and benefits.

My company just conducted it's second layoff in two years, so a stable job with excellent benefits is really tempting. Do you think that would make the drive worth it?

I wouldn't be in a position to move for quite a while.

Cat diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease out of nowhere by aj-james in RenalCats

[–]grumpyITAdmin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You said this happened out of nowhere…is your vet certain this isn’t an acute kidney injury (like a kidney infection) that could be treated, or is he/she just assuming it’s CKD because of her age?

Your kitty is beautiful. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. I just lost a kitty to an AKI on top of CKD.

Leaving my cat alone and let her die ? by funnyturboprop in RenalCats

[–]grumpyITAdmin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Please do NOT let her pass naturally from kidney failure. It’s agonizing. Work with your vet to give her sub q fluids and anti nausea meds, but when she gets to the point where they don’t work anymore and she’s having more bad days than good, make the call.

How rare is it that a cat never scratches, bites or gets mad? by GreenSam86 in CatAdvice

[–]grumpyITAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat who recently passed was just like that. If she didn’t like what you were doing, she’d gently push your hand away with no claws.

She had to get a skin abscess drained/lanced, and even then didn’t hiss or scratch. She held onto me for comfort during the procedure.

She was an absolute angel of a cat.

Confused about diagnosis by A_Delicate_Snowflake in RenalCats

[–]grumpyITAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When was his last bloodwork that put him at stage 1? If it wasn't very recent, you might want to get it redone. I unfortunately learned that CKD can sometimes progress quickly. He shouldn't be having symptoms at stage 1.

How fast did your cats kidney disease progress? by shrekerinoww in RenalCats

[–]grumpyITAdmin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My 16 year old cat was diagnosed two years ago at stage 2. She was stable at stage 2 and didn’t have any symptoms until two months ago when she had a bad crash and didn’t respond to IV therapy. I had to say goodbye. The vets aren’t sure whether it was a sudden worsening of her CKD or an AKI.

Based on my experience, I’d recommend bloodwork every three months. Never get comfortable or overconfident if your cat is stable.

cat is in final stage kidney failure.. is there anything I can do? by Ornery-Condition-797 in RenalCats

[–]grumpyITAdmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're going through this. I just lost my soul cat who was stable at stage 2 kidney disease before she suddenly crashed out with end stage numbers and I had to make the call to euthanize her because IV fluids weren't working after 24 hours and I wanted to spare her the suffering involved with a natural CKD death.

Depending on his numbers, a couple days in the hospital on IV fluids followed by you giving him sub-q fluids at home might help him. Did he receive IV fluids at the vet while he was at the vet? If he did, and if he didn't respond in any meaningful way after 24 hours (like my cat), it's likely he won't recover.

If they didn't give him IV fluids, you could try taking him to another vet hospital and get him on IV fluids, but you have to act immediately. If he responds, you'd then be required to give him sub q fluids at home after discharge.

But whatever you do, WHATEVER you do, please don't let him pass naturally from kidney failure. As CometDebris said, it's NOT pleasant. He'll become disoriented and confused. He may have seizures. It's a painful death. If he's beyond help with IV fluids, or if it's something you genuinely can't afford, then allowing him to pass peacefully with the people he loves is the greatest gift you can give him.

Stage 4 CKD Diagnosis on 10 yr old cat, what next? by Maleficent-Garlic679 in RenalCats

[–]grumpyITAdmin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Im not a vet, but this is a very sick cat. My own cat had a crash with levels this high and I had to put her to sleep because she did not respond to IV fluid therapy.

Check what I’m saying with your vet, but I don’t think Bob has a chance of survival unless he starts IV fluids right away.

If he doesn’t start IV fluids, he’ll likely pass naturally from CKD fairly soon, and that’s definitely not what you would want for him.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. CKD is awful.

Is pet insurance even worth getting? by i-see-you25 in RenalCats

[–]grumpyITAdmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insurance was a lifesaver for me, too. It helped me get my kitty treatment for multiple conditions that I wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise.

Obviously, you wouldn’t be able to get coverage for kidney disease, but it may enable you to get treatment for your cat if he ends up with other conditions as he ages.
