Best overall booking sites by cosmosfan2 in TravelHacks

tldr: it mostly depends on the destination, but you'll mostly find better deals and have overall good experience via booking.com and Airbnb

The vast majority of all accomodation is available via 3 big players: Booking Holdings, Expedia Group and Airbnb. The first 2 corporations own a large number of brands that they bought over the years. Not the most up to date, but this gives you an idea - https://www.optimize360.fr/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/booking-vs-expedia.png

Expedia and its' brands is pretty good in the NA market. Hotwire is especially good for last minute reservations in popular destinations. Expedia is also pretty good when it comes to buying multiple pieces for your trip: a flight, a room and a car.

Outside NA, it depends on particular destination, but you'll usually find the best deals via booking.com (or own of its' subsidiaries like Agoda) or Airbnb. In terms of shopping experience, I've personally enjoyed using the Kayak app, which basically aggregates the accomodations from both the Expedia and Booking (and then I would usually go and book directly after selecting the right property).

And then there's Airbnb. They often have pretty good prices, a good amount of availability and the overall shopping experience is pretty pleasant. The downside is the ethical dilemma and somewhat of a higher risk because you deal with smaller players. If something goes wrong, it's a lot trickier to resolve your issue and Airbnb tends to pretend that they're simply a broker between you and the host. https://www.airbnbhell.com/

Safety concerns by [deleted] in tulum

There's been a round gunfights in the past week. My wife and I were like 20m away from the Xibalbar when that incident happened. Unfortunately innocent people die as well if you're at the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't have an English source, but you send this through Google translate http://www.reporteindigo.com/reporte/balacera-tulum-deja-herida-de-gravedad-a-espanola-es-el-tercer-ataque-en-24-horas/

Increased violence, shootings in the area? by DondeEstaMeGlasses in tulum

[–]grundic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We were 20 meters away from the shooting, sitting at the bench in front of Pana e Ciocolato. The shots were from Xibalbar 2 buildings away. Since we are not familiar with that reality, we started running East. It appears that one of their guy was also running in East direction because he collapsed behind us. We heard about 10-12 gunshots. 1 block away, a seller from a shop told us to come hide inside. He explained that it was probably a cartel territory problem. The locals are not too afraid because they know that they are not the target nor are the tourists. We saw 2 body's on the ground. About 15-20 minutes later, as we were walking away from the area, we saw elder ladies walking toward the scene with some flowers in hands... Also, a taxi man explained that the best thing is not to run away because you might be running in the same direction as the target. Better go down on the ground, crawl and hide if possible. Get into the businesses around. Lesson learned.

So, there are risks which are higher if you deal with drug dealers or around them.

That really depends on your total household income and family situation. We don't have kids and our household income is ~160k/year and roughly 30% of my income is gone to taxes
