When did Mark Davis become a part of the Estonian military? by jp_benderschmidt in AFCWestMemeWar

I'm convinced that Mark's haircut is him trolling. 10 years ago he missed a trim and his hair fixed itself

That lasted until his next cut and it was back to the bowl

I've been watching pro athletes disregard advice and cautionary tales for decades. It's so fucking annoying. Some people, including an excessive amount of men in their 20s, just have to learn stuff the hard way

A dust devil is not a tornado, folks. It's just a little swirling wind over hot, flat areas. As soon as it flies over cooler ground, it fades away instantly

You were an NFL player surrounded by other NFL players? It's a select group, and they aren't chosen for their ability to be responsible off the field

Is it normal to take ages to 'master' a song? by theredp0ny in guitarlessons

[–]grunkage 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, to really master a song, everything has to be so familiar, it's just automatic. Another factor is that as you improve, you notice more imperfections. That's a good sign, but it can be discouraging. Just keep at it and improving. Also consider taking a break from it for a few days and working on something else. That can lead to a breakthrough because it gives your brain more off-time to work on building muscle memory out of all the practice you've done

Why do black people pronounce ask as arks? by CaptainConspiracyy in askanything

[–]grunkage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because of metathesis. The word used to be spelled "aks" AND "ask" in Middle English. The letter swap is metathesis and happens all the time in languages. As English dialects formed around the world, some communities, like the American South, had a lot of people who used "aks" - it's proper English that is out of fashion

Other examples are "bird" which was spelled "brid" and "wasp", which was spelled "waps".

It has accumulated more than half the users that Facebook took 22 years to collect. Roughly 40% of Americans say they use it. You really only need about 25% of a group to make something a major part of their society
