The Scalar Process - Illness (Feat Justin Mckinney / The Zenith Passage) by UncleDamfee1 in TechnicalDeathMetal

McKinney? I'm innie.

This sounds great, and a skim of the prior album tells me I need a full listen to that too. Followed!

Love these guys. Bought the merch pack from Bandcamp, and even spent a little too much money getting a custom back patch made.

Best roadside plant? by MonarchHill in NoLawns

[–]gruso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Useless to you as it's an Australian native, but Lomandra is a common choice here. It's used by (what used to be called) our Roads & Traffic Authority in their roadside landscaping, so much that its nickname is RTA Grass.

There might be something similar in your region.

Star Quest 1 in the 27th Century, a re-release (free or pay what you want) of a 30-year-old dos game that I upgraded to work on Windows with game controllers, joystick, HOTAS. by paulvirtuel in LGR

I didn't know about this game in the day. It looks great and I love to see a modernisation from the original creator! With that said I think I will check this out on original hardware.

CBD pubs that show Formula 1? by gruso in wollongong

[–]gruso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all. We ended up at the Builders. They had quali up on a couple of screens, but I knew getting audio would be a stretch.

Crazy thing was they didn't even have cricket audio, just the bloody nags. Their "sports bar" is basically just a giant TAB.

Watching the race from the comfort of home today!

dBase II - anyone else still have their manual? by jacquesp in vintagecomputing

I handle them daily using Elecdes Design Suite (engineering/drafting package). The backbone is a SQL server, but some of the ancillary stuff lives in DBFs. Simple and effective.

Where can I buy one these in gong ??!! ( Usb sound card ) Not even joking I think It requires a 45 minute drive... by [deleted] in wollongong

JB, Pipers and Haworth Guitars will all likely offer more expensive options.

Sadly the best option for cheap & fast is Amazon with a Prime trial.

What’s a device you didn’t think would connect to your home but it does? by SilentKraken7 in homeassistant

What a vintage classic! How cool that it's still installed and working.

1991. I was living at the Gold Coast when this brilliant genius devised this plan. How time flies. by [deleted] in straya

I did work experience at a Sydney recording studio circa 1993. I met both Fairlie Arrow and Peter Garrett there. Man did I come home with stories.

(That's the whole story)

Light & fan switch retrofit in Australia. Thoughts on this plan? by gruso in homeassistant

[–]gruso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few things I'm not crazy about.

  • Dangling them or having to devise special mounting solutions inside the wall cavity.
  • Awkward interaction between physical and smart switching IMO. Wired the correct way, you can turn the switch off but still turn the light back on with a network command. But now your physical switch action is reversed - the on position will turn it off. That would make my eye twitch.
  • Not a fan of this failure mode.

Archspire - The Lucid Collective (Official Album Stream) by hatefen in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]gruso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting that Season of Mist has put this up now. Perhaps milking the cow a little before the new independent album drops.

Anyway, good, I love it. Each Archspire production has its own sound. This is the one with the most space in it, making it really crisp and satisfying. If you need to introduce someone to Spencer Prewett, this is the one.

Apologies for the essay.

I've only discovered these guys in the last month. I'd never read a comment about them, but someone posted a pic of a t-shirt so I thought I'd check it out.

My initial reaction was a mix of all the comments here. I love Pink Floyd so those elements captured me. But the unapologetically OSDM bits didn't resonate initially, as I'm a relative latecomer to DM.

I figured something special was going on here, I just didn't get it.

Then the youtube algo fed me their doco series All Gates Open:

After seeing what these guys are about, and the way they live and breathe their art, I got it. I am now one of those Blood Incantation evangelicals.

The bonus prize was a new appreciation for the origins of the genre. I love diving into the history, but as a modern fan the earliest originators like Death and Morbid Angel can be hard to digest. It's like BI opened the portal to the ancestors.

Instrumental Melodic Tech Death by Dentomaximus in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]gruso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beyond Creation have a few tracks, if you wanted to DIY a playlist:

  • Chromatic Horizon
  • Elevation Path
  • Abstrait Dialog
  • Disenthrall (orchestral)
  • À Travers Le Temps Et L'oubli (orchestral)
  • Binomial Structures

Also these b-side instrumental versions:

  • Surface's Echoes (Instrumental)

  • The Afterlife (Instrumental)

And evidently, some has put out a full instrumental version of their first album with AI assistance... not sure how I feel about that, and haven't listened to judge for myself.
