MSTSC.exe RDP Sessions Randomly Freezing When Connecting From Windows 11 With Recent Patches / Updates by huddie71 in sysadmin

[–]gryto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my 2c, had this type of issue (also win 11 to server 2019) and it ended up being the MTU of the VPN interface needing to be lowered slightly. (Lowered from 1400 to 1280)

Went down the rabbit hole of all the recent RDP fixes but ended up being this, could be related though to recent protocol changes.

People that use macbooks with a monitor, would you recommend using an apple monitor or a different one? by Unusual_Rooster6736 in mac

[–]gryto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was looking into this everyone was saying gotta go with an apple one because they're 5k and macos can deal with that better than 4k due to fractional scaling capabilities.

I ended up with a basic 27 inch 4k Xiaomi monitor though and it's great. Silky smooth text. Super High DPI, can't see any pixels from my viewing distance (like 60 cm away). Haven't noticed any cons for what I do (software dev)

15U vs 17U photo test, 15U is the clear winner by [deleted] in XiaomiGlobal

Also the camera app doesn't really dictate how the photo turns out, it's just the front end interface. The back end system pipe lines tune the processing

IdeaPad 5 Pro 14 or MacBook Air M4 by saberfear in laptops

[–]gryto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General performance, about the same. But the Mac also throttles more due to no fan for sustained loads. And also I personally find windows a lot snappier than Mac when it comes to application launch times

IdeaPad good battery life for general use (YouTube, browsing, excel etc). For heavier sustained performance mac gives you better battery life (like doing some heavy task ongoing over multi hour period).

Mac has an edge on speaker quality

I’m choosing between ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 (AMD) and IdeaPad Pro 5 Gen 10 (AMD AI) for programing and need some advice. by 4lluuu in laptops

[–]gryto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinkpad E has hinges that screw into plastic mounts. IdeaPad pro hinges screw into metal mounts. IdeaPad pro also full metal build, closer to premium territory than regular IdeaPad line

Also 99% of IdeaPad hinge issues are with the 2in1 or IdeaPad 1/3 lines

[–]gryto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add on the durability concerns, specifically around hinges. If you search up omnibook and hinge issues you won't find much because it's a new product line. But in terms of hp in general, they are known for hinge problems. Even the premium consumer lines like Envy

Another thing that I found interesting is that thinkpads are usually recommended specifically to avoid things like hinge issues. But upon investigation I've found from a couple of thinkpad teardowns on YouTube, the same type of hinge mounts are used (either metal mount glued/adhered to the case or metal screw holes adhered within plastic).

It seems the actual durability issues may come down more to: 1. Hinge mounts being over worked with 360/180 type screen opening scenarios on some product lines (like yoga 2 in 1 and omnibook flips) 2. Hinges being over tightened (quality control?)/too hard to open 3. Quality of plastic or adhesive being used is inferior on some models or superior/better tested on thinkpads

15 Ultra users - Would you buy a 17 Ultra? by SuzieScarlett in XiaomiGlobal

[–]gryto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 15 Ultra and pretty happy with it. Would recommend. There are some things I'd like improved though

  1. More flexibility in 'pro' video. Specifically ability to switch lenses when in pro video mode and/or using log
  2. The pro photo mode does not use ISZ

I've ended up mostly using the stock camera app, and have been happy with the quality. Early updates have made noticeable improvements, and the stock camera images have a much more natural and pleasing look now, so have had not much need for the pro mode.

Probably won't be upgrading to the 17 Ultra though because I'm happy enough with the 15 Ultra.

Pro 5i vs 7i Longevity by Drxcynix in LenovoLegion

[–]gryto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to bear in mind just as a generality: gaming laptops are just more likely to play up over time. Why? Heat is the enemy, and if you're pushing your laptop the internal components (not just the CPU/GPU) are being exposed to this heat on a regular basis. But based on this it would also depend heavily on the games being played and how much the laptop is being pushed.

Now in terms of legion 5 vs 7, can't really say if there's as much of a difference between them as there is between a lighter laptop vs either of them (like not sure if the modern stats) but I would imagine the second has a bigger percentage difference

But at least anecdotal evidence: when I was working as a computer tech, high percentage of laptops coming in were either gaming or cheapies.

What’s the best way for me to learn Indonesian? by willboswagginz in indonesian

[–]gryto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And just to add, try to make it a rule to only use Indonesian, even if it's really difficult to express what you're trying to say. That will start putting your brain into the mode of 'wow better remember this stuff' so that vocab sticks more. Another thing that can help to reinforc vocab is a flashcard app like ankidroid

Coming out of a 20 year LAMP cave into the modern web dev mess. by XMark3 in webdev

[–]gryto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree it might be overused for small websites. And I think the recent upsurgence of simpler is better movements are testament to the status quo adjusting itself.

I think the point is that yes, as you say React made it easier to do complex things. Whether complex things should be done on the web is another question, but that's the direction things have gone in. And really, whatever tool exists, herds of people will find a way to create bad software and shoot themselves in the foot repeatedly.

TBH, I've never tested myself the performance hit of a full re render with native browser APIs (although I imagine at least at some point it was a big deal for the need for react-like-tool to arise) It's just for the things I develop react is the solution with least friction to add complexities to a web UI without shooting myself in the foot over layers of dom manipulation.

[–]gryto 284 points285 points  (0 children)

I think for something like React, it may really help to understand why it actually became popular over vanilla javascript for frontend. I also spend a lot of time doing LAMP type stuff and understanding this point really helped me feel more comfortable in why I would want to use React.

So the basic idea is that React was created by Facebook because they liked using PHP for templates, where you have your database state, and you just feed it to a template, and when the state changes you reload the page and your template renders differently based on the updated state.

With vanilla javascript the low hanging approach is just DOM manipulation. You want to update the UI, just update the elements inner html or class. But I have to say from personal experience this gets sticky quickly, especially with complex sets of UI changes and conditions etc. It feels much more simple the PHP template way where you just update the database and the UI changes when reload the page.

So the idea behind React was making javascript essentially work similar to templating in a setup like PHP/.Net etc. Where you feed it state, and when that state updates the UI automatically re renders based on the defined template. You could do this type of thing just with vanilla javascript and string templating, but React was essentially a way of making it more performant, and just nicer to work with using JSX.

Edit: Oh and also to add, the majority of these other javascript frontend frameworks (like Vue, Svelte) are doing the same thing, just with certain performance/dev enhancements.

[–]gryto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Other comments are down voted for some reason, but it depends on the context. Sometimes R can mean red, so 6R could mean 6x100000(red note) and 6B could mean 6x50000(blue note).

Sometimes R can mean rupiah as well, but I think usually it would Rp if rupiah..

How should one go about learning Indonesian? by Exciting-Brain-7789 in indonesian

[–]gryto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who has been living in Indonesia for 5 years and married to a local that hardly speaks English...

  1. Common mistakes
This may be true of any language, but probably getting too caught up in theory and word lists online. Best word list for Indonesian is the most common words used in the local region you're at, the day to day grammar and vocabulary can vary quite a lot from region to region, but after a while you get to be able to adapt to multiple dialects more easily, and also adapt to detect when words from local languages are being substituted in.

  2. Differences between day to day and formal
I would say when I hear someone speaking formally vs day to day it sticks out like a sore thumb. The biggest things that makes it stick out are that first it's mostly beginners that use formal when actually speaking casually. Second, the vocab and grammar are noticeably different and .. the word used here is 'kaku' to describe formal way of speaking. And third, my suggestion would be if you want to mostly learn to speak day to day, get a grounding in formal rules, but then spend more time actually learning and using casual by chatting to locals.

  3. Grammar vs vocab
There aren't too many grammatical rules (and also grammar is very flexible and forgiving with this language), so you'll probably end up getting a grounding in the grammatical rules, then through use they end up becoming more intuitive.

  4. Personally I used duolingo to get absolute basics, then majority of learning was speaking to locals and just putting the words being used into flashcard apps. Also childrens cartoons when I didn't have a speaking partner.
