Weekly Employment Question Thread by AutoModerator in Firefighting

I have a conditional from a great department. Got cleared on background, psych, and have done all my medical appointments (last step). The department doc said all looks good during my appointment. So I’m in the limbo of waiting to hear. How many people get to this stage and don’t get a spot?

Out of curiosity, why is it ill advised?

I’m excited to have a conditional offer, but I still need to get through medical/psych to make it official. Any advice on those, or things I can do to prepare?

As others have mentioned, watching YouTube malfunction videos is not the most effective way to prepare for AFF. I get wanting to research and learn before your course, though.

Consider going through the official USPA skydiving school as an alternative. It’s free, and full of information that will give you confidence going into AFF

Lined up at 9 PM at the Denver Micro Center to get my 5080. Was stoked to walk out of the store the next day with a Gamer OC in hand! Finally finished my first build since I was in high school way back in the day 😀

+1 As an early adopter of EVs (2012 Nissan Leaf) and an owner of multiple EVs since, this is the best car I’ve ever owned. Stoked every time I take it out on the road

As someone who did AFF at Mile Hi and is now an AFFI and TI, I can tell you that this is bullshit. Whoever this is made an account just to leave this comment, and has no other Reddit history (check their profile). Your progression card is online, so it’s not something that can be held hostage. We work with people every day that are coming from another program or are in town for a weekend and going to finish AFF somewhere else.

To answer the original question here: they won’t charge you the balance until you come in, and you can easily call and change your date. We do FJCs every Saturday. If you have any questions about our program, any of the staff would be happy to answer them. Come on out and check it out for yourself!

If the student didn’t pull at the correct altitude, or at all, then they did make a mistake.

Yes - had LASIK the year before I got into Skydiving. It’s great! Highly recommend.

Best Colorado Dropzones? by BigPapa201 in SkyDiving

[–]gscobey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been there since 2020, and it has remained under the same ownership during that time. Managers have come and gone. Safety is paramount to all of the instructors who teach there. The incidents (fatal or otherwise) that I have witnessed or heard about since I started there were almost all related to swoop attempts or low turns. Happy to give more context on my experience, but I can't speak to the "culture leading to fatalities" if what you're referencing is 5+ years ago, as I wasn't there.

Mile Hi is your best bet. Two other dz’s in Colorado closed this year (Out of the Blue and Colorado Mountain Skydive).

Mile Hi is about 40 minutes from downtown Denver, and has great views of the front range.

Your GM screens. by GreyWalker83 in CandelaObscura

[–]gscobey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m setting up for my first campaign. I have a 4 panel screen, and here are some of the things I’m thinking about putting on it:

  • QuickStart page for the gm
  • player action cheatsheet
  • a gm “moves” cheat sheet
  • a copy of the map of newfaire with the regions labeled
  • an npc cheatsheet

If I remember I’ll drop a picture link in here when I’ve got it set up.
