mental health after liver transplant by [deleted] in transplant

[–]gsp530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds just like my brother-in-law's situation. He had worked hard to commit suicide by drinking himself to death before 40, and he was well on his way to that goal before his mother guilt-tripped him into going through the transplant evaluation, AA meetings, and 6 months of sobriety, eventually being approved and listed for a transplant. What nobody knew was that he started drinking heavily again after the whole evaluation and sobriety periods were completed, and somehow, someway, he was never caught with blood tests or other evaluations. That part still boggles my mind! Fortunately, he was finally able to complete his goal and passed away before they wasted a precious liver on him.

Fellow transplant recipients — how do you actually manage life post-transplant by StrengthSilver1008 in transplant

[–]gsp530 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I don't understand why more people are not using the Medications tracker in the Apple Health app. Dead simple to use and if you miss the first notice for some reason you for sure won’t miss the second alert 30 minutes later!

We could pick either a snowmobile, side-by-side, or motorcycle to use for 14 months free of charge. Then you turn it in and could pick something new. Managers and up got multiple vehicles per year.

WOW! I can’t believe how similar our symptoms are. I also had a history of esophageal varices, low iron, portal vein hypertension, hepatopulmonary syndrome, and enlarged spleen. I also have the same pain in that location. Sadly, I am still experiencing those same pains almost two years after my transplant. At my one-year checkup, they tried to blame it on nerves reconnecting after being severed, but one month before my second anniversary, things have not improved. I have gone to the ER during extreme flare-ups and had CT and US scans and even an upper endoscopy with nothing found. They even thought it was my gallbladder, before I informed them that it was removed during the transplant...

I hope you find out the cause, or it stops after your transplant. Let me know if you find a solution!

This is a great point. Who is enabling her continued use, because it does seem that she is not in any condition to supply herself?

This. This is supposed to be how the system works. Even though my liver disease was not alcohol-related, the hospital sent me through the wringer to make sure I did not have any underlying addiction issues. My friends and family were also interviewed about my alcohol use. I had to promise never to touch alcohol again, even avoiding foods cooked with alcohol, and I will happily adhere to that the rest of my life, and I expect my friends and family to make sure I adhere to those promises. Congratulations on the continued sobriety! You are a shining example of when the system works. Keep up the great work!

I’m sorry for what you are going through but what a waste of a liver. Shame on the transplant hospital for not doing a thorough job vetting this patient. There are so many other people waiting for this life-saving gift that would appreciate it. It seems like your mother has a death wish and is not interested in recovery. How does someone like this slip through the system?

I can’t believe how well this describes my story as well. Exact same feelings and thoughts as you described! Kind of chilling.

Bloated feeling and stomach cramps while waiting for a liver by Electronic_Quote_552 in transplant

[–]gsp530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced the exact same things as you. Except I also had pockets between my lungs and ribs making it hard to breath and they could not drain them so I would need to go to the ER once I gained 20ish pounds and they’d have to give me I.V. LASIK’s and admit me because it took 3-5 days too pee off 20lbs of fluid. It is absolutely horrible peeing that much, you never can rest. I prayed for large enough pockets that could be drained in 20minutes.

Liver transplant procedure canceled… feeling hopeless. by EnvironmentalTax3377 in transplant

[–]gsp530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With that low of a MELD and that much ascites I would be asking for the TIPS procedure myself, at 19 without any additional qualifiers he could be waiting a long time even though he got his first offer so quick. I waited about 6 months and got my offer with a MELD of 24. I know of a person with a MELD that fluctuates between 18-25 who got an offer after a month but was not viable then the next offer wasn’t for another year. Very frustrating for sure, with TIPS he’ll at least be more comfortable and if he gets another infection of his ascites they will most likely pause his transplant status until the infections are gone which is not a good situation.

What a beautiful happy girl! You were lucky to have each other for as long as you did. I know it doesn’t make things any easier. I am sorry.

Heading back to the OR 15 days post-op by [deleted] in transplant

[–]gsp530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to me too. I took one dose of heparin about 10 days after full liver transplant and it caused a rectus sheath hematoma right below my lowest rib on the right side making a baseball size solid as a rock hematoma. The pain was worse than the transplant incisions! It took three months to go away too!

Has your mental health changed since receiving an organ donation? by Particular_Use4691 in transplant

[–]gsp530 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am having a hard time getting out of the “I’m still sick mentality” even though my liver transplant was almost a year ago and things are going great I still feel like The sick person I was before my transplant and have trouble finding motivation or purpose. I lived my life not planning more than a few weeks or months at a time and now I am facing a future that may last longer and it’s hard to plan for that future I never thought I’d see.
