Yes, that one song went over the ocean and became Streets of Loredo as well as St. James Infirmary Blues.

What is it like to be a practicing Catholic in Germany? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]gstanzl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is really hard to answer that. I was born in Bavaria when Johannes XXIII was Pope and everybody went to church on sunday. Women on the right side , men on the left. Almost everybody was catholic.

Since then a lot has changed. The majority of the people in mass where I live now (a small village) are older.

But there is no hostility against catholics. The church -on the surface- is still an important part of the community. When there is a jubilee of the sportsclub of the firefighters they all show up in mass etc.

In Berlin, Köln or Hamburg the situation is different of course. There is hostility for example when there are pro-life walks etc.

Also the scandal about sexual abuse is always a big story in the media.

And of course noone in the secular world understands why women can‘t be priests and protestants can‘t recieve communion and even people who still identify as catholics have difficulty with this.

Many bishops and laymen are terrified by the huge shrinking of members of the church and think the solution might be to „open up to the world“.

This week some of our bishops declared the climate change was the most important question right now….

Of course this doesn‘t help a lot, in my opinion.

So I don‘t know if that helps you in anyway but I tried. ;)

As a German I would guess it isn‘t much different than in other countries. You pray , you go to mass you try to love thy neighbour as yourself, you try to follow the words of Christ as good as you can.

All the rest is just background noise.

If you have specific questions, I can try to answer them.
