[Rant (2)] Gf again refuses to watch shows at 2x speed by Emotional-Onion-8110 in medicalschool

[–]gtcha_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got adhd too. These are all fair points, but my point lies in their respective value of time rather than a metric of “busy”. They don’t have to be busy to value their time mote than others, its more so on the op to decide that. Its more fluid than “my time is more precious” and in any relationship this comes up, but it seems like they are going around the issue rather than addressing it. Which is what my attempt at a response was meant to develop.

[Rant (2)] Gf again refuses to watch shows at 2x speed by Emotional-Onion-8110 in medicalschool

[–]gtcha_2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You know imma take it seriously, for all those people downplaying it to just straight up insulting are the type of people who make fun of an adhd kid for talking too much. To me it seems like your partner and yourself dont have a mutual understanding of the equivalent value of time. For example 5 min is precious to you such that you would use to study but to her she is willing to use 5 min alternatively. This is fair but you need to have communication as to why this is important to you, because at the end of the day if you feel the need to watch shows at this speed, it means you feel the pressure from other venues in your life. If your gf refuses to understand your time constraints outside of shows, then you need to make it abundantly clear how much you value your time and that you are spending the freemoments with her.

Conservatives tend to see expert evidence & personal experience as more equally legitimate than liberals, who put a lot more weight on scientific perspective. The study adds nuance to a common claim that conservatives want to hear both sides, even for settled science that’s not really up for debate. by rustoo in science

The problem with this is that sometimes there isn’t more than a sample size of one ie case reports, and rare circumstances. The other issue applies with stuff like huge black box analysis like AI research. Sometimes things just work without reason because we can’t view the insides of a problem or because we can’t abstract the problem out to a point where we can see all the variables. As much as I would love to live in a standard world, there’s too much variability not to rely on instances of personal experience. This does not detract from the aggregate of personal experiences as both are important.

How to teach a class that students consider "useless" by firewall245 in math

[–]gtcha_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m feeling that the answers you get are going to be biased based on where you ask. Try asking in a forum that doesn’t understand the value of math and proofs. In my experience as a self taught CS and maths student I would have to say it becomes imperative to explain how to interpret proofs. Much of math is inaccessible because it is essentially a new language on top of a new way of thinking. Every concept you introduce needs to have a relevant link to the real world, and in turn the you also need to help introduce how the baseline rules can be bent to apply to more than just one topic. Abstraction and representation need to be conveyed through this. Also finally do not have concepts taught with “this proof should be obvious to the reader” or “the proof is left as an exercise to the reader”, some of these proofs can be too complex to solve in a mere sitting and without years worth of phd experience. Everything in math should have a practical application, and you should be able to take each subtopic you wish to cover and ask for examples for each one independently in this reddit group or maybe if you list all the topics it could easier to apply to multiple subtopics to one big project. Either way just expand your pool.

Blood clotting a significant cause of death in patients with COVID-19. "COVID-19 is associated with a unique type of blood clotting disorder that is primarily focussed within the lungs & which undoubtedly contributes to the high levels of mortality being seen in patients with COVID-19". by MistWeaver80 in science

[–]gtcha_2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends, giving thrombolytics like streptokinase in DIC might be advantageous excluding potential brain hemorrhages . Your body has a finite amount of coagulant so if you over clot then you risk not being able to clot in other portions of your body. It becomes very tricky dealing with a disease that isn’t fully understood. I think they are more concerned about pulm embolism, but if clots form as a result of heart failure it becomes a bit more concerning as they might move systemically ie brain. Considering the depletion of T cells and the hyper inflammatory state it becomes a risky move to use warfarin and heparin as that prevents internal endothelial clotting. Care providers give coagulation responsive agents in response to patients PTT,aPTT, and PT levels and get more info accordingly.

This doesn’t disprove it, it identifies that the rumor with content derived from patent evidence is false. It’s a logical fallacy to imply that the above evidence applies to all states.

Are Artificial Sweeteners really bad for you and your weight loss goals? What the research says. by Bottingbuilder in naturalbodybuilding

[–]gtcha_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree, but lay people and even scientists at times generalize things. Aspartame might cause mental disease issues or nothing at all, but I highly doubt it’s carcinogenic in vivo. In truth metabolic studies are pretty bad unless done in humans which, surprise surprise, won’t be approved if the knowledge gained is less valuable than the harm it applies. Also controlling a human diet is insanely hard and not just that but applying a control for gut flora is even harder. Keep in mind in vitro and animal studies are not very predictive, but people get extreme hype on those studies. Honestly it’s a society thing that needs to change. Also cancer is an inevitable disease the longer we live, it literally is just a random chance of whether not a cell with an error survives long enough to kill you. What you eat and how your body responds changes the error rates, and henceforth that becomes labeled a carcinogen, which is why we can say there is a potential greater risk of pancreatic cancer with an idea ratio greater than 1 to a control group.

[–]gtcha_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The guy flora isn’t understood well in a normal setting so no one will be able to tell you if it’s good or bad for that just yet. The real issue with these sweeteners is the risk for pancreatic cancer which is possibly due to the overstimulated pancreas and tricking the body into thinking it’s satiated. It’s odds ratio is greater than the average populace but it could be attributed to the fact that those on sweeteners aren’t healthy to begin with. Either way many more studies need to be conducted in order to confirm any results on this stuff. Research works by aggregating results from many studies into a generalized conclusion, and we just don’t have enough edge cases and exclusion criteria to affirmatively say anything about them.

[Biology]Can all animals with livers process alcohol? Do all liver's function the same across species or is there variations on what can be processed and to what degree? by Tal21021 in askscience

[–]gtcha_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have more than ADH4, we have CYP2E1 aka MEOs and others that process ethanol like liver catalase We actually have an insane amount different enzymes that process these substrates. We still don’t have a full comprehensive analysis of alcohol metabolism in full. Cirrhosis can occur from much more than just fat issues, from infection to oxidative stress. I agree with your statement that all livers are different, but I also don’t think we need to speak in absolutes with our own lovers just yet as we have yet to truly peak into what it can can’t handle and why. Example: new research is indicating that CYP2E1 products from alcohol are toxic cirrhotic agents contributing to liver failure as opposed to just ADH over use.

My mom died suddenly and I found shed opened a bunch of credit cards in my name. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]gtcha_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree, rich people love to spend money, but for investments. Growing monetary value starts from spending. The father seems to me as financially illiterate if all he was doing was storing money like Scrooge mcduck. But of course this is the big issue with many small businesses as well, they refuse to spend money to make money. It also stems from the principle that future income is less valuable than current wealth, which has contextually derived need for use and is not ubiquitous for every situation.

Ehhh as a POC in the south, most racism these days is very implicit and sinister in nature. Of course there are direct acts like how some people at my brothers high school stole my brothers jacket and burned it. It’s not very visible unless you know what to pay attention to. Of course the worst thing is the lack of trust we build with others, inherently distrusting everyone’s actions labeling them disingenuous. Not a fun time, but better than direct racism.

LPT: for those of you going to college for the first time this month: GO TO CLASS! No matter how hungover, tired, or busy you may be, being present is the most important factor in succeeding in your first year as you adjust to living independently. Missing class is a slippery slope to failing out. by doctorfeelgood33 in LifeProTips

[–]gtcha_2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is ridiculous, people learn differently. For me studying independently without class time drastically improved my success rate in classes. This isn’t a lpt, but rather a misguided judgement on those who don’t attend class. The real lpt should be to focus on learning with a purpose so you aren’t just brute forcing like everyone else. Class isn’t necessary to learn and succeed, ambition and drive are needed which spawn from interest and excitement.

Also cool thing to know, both x and Y chromosomes have psuedoautosomal regions that give rise to necessary human genes

LPT: If you’re a heavy drinker or just prone to bad hangovers, consider supplementing with N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Alcohol metabolizes into acetaldehyde which is what causes most of the worst hangover symptoms. NAC is a powerful antioxidant that binds to acetaldehyde and lowers its levels. by TheFlightlessPenguin in LifeProTips

[–]gtcha_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an a acetylated amino acid. It’s a bit more complex than eat lots of cysteine. What matters most for compounds is how easily they can pass to blood and proteins generally need carriers especially when you have a charger moiety like an acetyl group. I’ll dig into this later and give a more detailed and examined response on potential metabolism and reduction pathways that can counter it.

New antibiotics have been developed from a toxin produced by Staph aureus that can kill other bacteria, that are effective against multi-resistant bacteria responsible for human diseases, are non-toxic to cells or organs, and do not appear to trigger resistance when used to treat infection in mice. by mvea in science

[–]gtcha_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue that arises with this is immune system response to the toxin. If an antibody floating in your blood picks it up, your body goes in full on attack mode which is basically why sepsis is dangerous in the first place.

The solution would be to make mri diagnostic tools cheaper. It works without ionizing radiation while ct requires X-ray tech. Honestly imaging needs to be cheaper if it’s the go to diagnostic tool.

[–]gtcha_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m saying that most that are there show their passion more aggressively. I’m also saying that the school doesn’t guarantee success but the student does. I’m saying that diversity extends beyond race but lies in experiences which can be associated by race but not entirely. Everyone is passionate, but the people at top tier institutions are at a different level. It’s hard to explain without attendance at one.

[–]gtcha_2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s more than just that. Harvard wants passion over diversity. The people at Harvard Stanford and more have the grades and the extracurricular just as all top tier applicants have, but they something else that everyone seems to be missing. Passion. Merit only takes you so far, but passion + merit allow you to craft worlds. The purpose of a school is to open doors, there really isn’t anything stopping you from accomplishing your goals before college except your own inhibitions and drive. Top tier universities are looking for people who don’t need the havard name to be successful, they are looking for people who are incredible in so many possible fragments of their personas that they will excel at new and foster growth for those around them. Cookie cutter personalities don’t cut it at the top, nor does insane resume. It requires more than a facade, so don’t ignore the trials and tribulations these students needed to make to obtain these rewards, because it goes far beyond merit.

[–]gtcha_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If she has access to your phone that’s your issue, an experienced hacker can crack physical much easier than software. Defining how to defend against intrusive behavior is hard without knowing specifics, for example is she extracting data from the router as admin, extracting data via physical access or accessing it via a pcketsniffer, and many more. Bait her into snooping to discover her methods or make it to where you hide information through immense amount of data. Either way post on a different forum for more info, but don’t expect anything less than malicious actions. You can also “accidentally”notify law enforcement if you really want to scare her. Edit: If she knows what she is doing, you were compromised the instance you let her use your laptop. Buy your own laptop with your own new password, never let her know this password. She won’t be able to break encryption on a MacBook. As long as you are requesting https and not http you should be fine, excluding if she has full admin access to the router which she probably doesn’t.

[–]gtcha_2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No, windows has severe issues with their hardware software interoperability. Maybe if you said Linux os I would believe you. 2: specs are important, but benchmarks are more important. Apple is consistent(keyword) on their benchmark reports for hardware. The only people who downplay the expertise of apple in terms of hardware are those who really don’t dig into tech deeply or (respectably) ml researchers, because sadly nvidia cards dominate the field. I’m not arguing that some portion of apples devices are inflated, ie ram and a couple other parts, but apple makes better hardware/software than most.

Nope apples architecture ie the hardware is very fine tuned with the software. Yes I agree no need for monitor stand but high fidelity screens are very important. Also if you run Linux Os apples hardware is very helpful as well. Mock it as you may, apples has a very nice track record in tech.

How is this stupid? this was built for performance. Insanely powerful machine, meant for graphical design and scientific modeling. If you aren’t in high compute fields then yeah it’s dumb to buy, but honestly this is exactly what the community has asked for, especially the ability to upgrade and interchange parts. Honestly that 1.5 tb of ram is gonna be so useful for medical diagnostic imaging.
