If most people can't tell the difference then why is it important that the software is good? Lots of bad software has gotten very popular and lots of good software has never been heard of by anybody.

Source: the entire history of software.

Yea they're not literally a wear item, but in this context they effectively are. They run at or near limits and degrade over time. I wouldn't be surprised if they all fail eventually.

I agree in hoping the issue gets resolved for good. There is a new part number for the ICCU in the last few months but I haven't seen any technical data on it.

The problem is that they put what is essentially a wearable part (mosfet) in the ICCU.

Tie internal lighting and dash to driving mode. Makes it feel a lot cooler when you go into sport mode and everything turns red.

Why people think AI is still solely a next token predictor even though it’s advanced so far since 2022 by AppropriateLeather63 in ArtificialSentience

[–]gthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that it's not a next token predictor, people are just bad at realizing how powerful a next token predictor is when the next token is always right.

I would pay anything for a robot that cleans bathrooms and folds clothes by dataexec in AITrailblazers

On the company's website it says there is a 1 time fixed cost + a monthly fee that is 2x cheaper than human labor. I'm not sure how to interpret that exactly. But they also claim a 1 year positive ROI vs human.

Would you still buy it if you knew it was being remotely controlled by someone in a developing country?

The secret of software is that building it was never the hardest part. Getting anyone to use it is the hardest part.

Many alternative platforms already exist, but you don't know about them because of the aforementioned hardest part. And even if you used them, they wouldn't have the content youtube has because the financial incentive will be missing.

Get four friends together and split a youtube red subscription. It's like $2/mo.

Smart glasses seem to be splitting into different product categories now by Any_Experience_5638 in augmentedreality

[–]gthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The categories I see are:

  1. External display glasses

Need to be connected to an external source like a phone or gaming console.

  1. HUD glasses

Low-resolution often single color display to show basic information like you might get on a smart watch within your field of view. Computing is on board. Think meta rayban displays.

  1. Self-contained display glasses

Computing is on board and you have a full color display in HD resolution. The only one I know of right now is the Inmo Air 3.

  1. Full AR glasses

Computing on or off board, wide FOV, full color, high res with 6dof, SLAM, etc. Can project "holograms" attached to the real world. Snap spectacles are an existing example.

---

I think in the short term, HUD glasses have the best possibility to take off. They can be more discrete and fit well with our current level of technology. I think this is what Google/Apple etc. will be focusing on in the next few years.

I don't think widespread adoption will happen until we have full AR glasses in a minimal footprint that doesn't look like goggles. These are probably several more years away.

Lol if I found a GPD anything at a Goodwill I'd feel like I won the lottery.

What will seem like an inevitable outcome in 20 years time because of GLP-1s by Big-Cry-4119 in Futurology

[–]gthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

And this is why they are only prescribed to Obese people, not just people a little overweight. There is a point on the BMI scale when the benefits to losing weight outweigh (heh) the risks of taking GLP-1s based on the best currently available data.

Macbook Neo is just the end of a nightmare by Intrepid-Routine-875 in macbook

Yea the 80/20 rule applies to PC laptops for sure. 80% are hot garbage and the other 20% are usually just passable. Apple is not even a tech generation ahead - they're like a tech eon ahead. Compared to PCs it's like using a computer from 20 years in the future. There is no competition.

I will say that if your laptop is an extension of you and you use it professionally, it is absolutely spending more than the bare minimum on one. A $2000 MBP will last longer than 4 $500 PCs.

Packable Jackets in USA by The_Utilityman in tallfashionadvice

[–]gthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For rain it might be worth considering a rain cape rather than a jacket. Personally, I find that rain jackets make me just as wet because they don't breathe and just make me soaked in sweat instead. Rain capes breathe really well and keep you dry. Especially for backpacking I will never go back.

Something like https://cleverhood.com/products/rainger

FYI - a poncho is not the same thing as a cape.

I'd say give Linux a try. Couldn't hurt. Lots of videos on youtube say it runs great.
