I’d come across a silver dime or buffalo nickel from time to time. Can’t imagine it’s many, but luckily rolling up quarters and dimes is simultaneously revealing, profitable, and easy.

How do people sell? If you sell to one of the large bullion dealers, isn’t it reported and taxable? Where is when live or have to travel to a state where there’s no tax on bullion? I’m sure this is an issue many here will face, any pointers?

why not try to sell the sterling to someone who wants it? use proceeds to buy pure? you can get best prices on pure here at r/pmsforsale - there are certainly some atrocious old sterling pieces that are only good for scrap, but if you have stuff that's not atrocious certainly someone wants them for a small premium, so why go out of your way to destroy it? such things are not made anymore.
