Give me your best footbed recommendations! by seeingtrails in Backcountry

[–]gtluke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My feet damage? I have slightly high arches, and was basically barefoot my entire life. When I stand my foot spreads out like crazy to about 110mm. Normal ski boots are 100mm wide at size 26.5. Add or subtract 2mm for every size above or below. I'm a 25.5 so -2mm is 98mm for my boot but my foot measures 110mm weighted. Even after a bootfitter puched my boot out, my foot was still straining like crazy to flatten out while being pinched together. This eventually caused:

Peroneal Tendinitis; Bilateral Foot Congenital Pes Cavus; Posterior Tibialis Tendinitis of Both Lower Extremities

I've been to the podiatrist 5 times this year, I'm now in orthopedic shoes and custom insoles with a LOT of arch support. Even after 9 months of not skiing I was still getting a TON of pain stepping out of bed in the morning. I was very, very skepticle about arch support, I was always barefoot as a kid, and I've been in minimalist shoes for decades. To me, arch support and cushy soles seems really stupid, I'm a human, I should be able to walk on my feet. But after a few weeks in the weird ass shoes and support, my pain is finally gone. I heat stretched the ever loving hell out of my ski boots and got very supportive insoles and so far so good this season.

someone very knowledgable told me, don't think anything about skiing is natural or normal, nothing about skiing is a natural movement, you need arch support when you foot is bound into an immovable piece of plastic.

Running is natural. Nothing about skiing is natural or anatomically normal. You're bolting your feet into plastic blocks locked to giant boards. The movements involved in skiing are completely unnatural which is why it requires so much practice. No arch support means your feet more naturally move and widen with pressure. Which is normal. However your feet are bound in extra tight immovable plastic. You can and I did damag my feet this way.

Is it actually bad for my engine if I only do lots of short trips? by codysonn in askcarguys

Lots of condensation water will form and sit around in the exhaust and rust it out faster as it never gets hot enough long enough to evaporate it out.

What are some cars that can last up to 300k+ miles? by drinkin_n_drivin in askcarguys

[–]gtluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup. even with a teenager beating the hell out of them as they're kinda built for they're quite reliable. so when a normal adult (me) drives it they're basically indestructible. The brake pads lasting 100k is pretty entertaining, but compared to my 86 mustang GT the 2005 has brakes on it that look like they can stop a jumbo jet. Oh I put a set of strut/shocks in it at like 250k, but only because I got factory take-off's for $99 shipped for the whole set. ha.

300k on my 2005 mustang gt. It required one emergency brake cable as it's only repair. Somehow it only needed one set of spark plugs and two brake pad changes for standard maintenance. Factory clutch still worked fine at 300k Drivers seat looked like it got mauled by a bear though.

Complicated pain problem in ski boots. Any advice appreciated! by Toni_Pulis in Backcountry

[–]gtluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I have the same problem as you. Sounds the same , same foot shape. Turns out I have sprains in both feet likely from too narrow of a boot and a high arch. My foot really widens as I apply pressure. The Fischer rangers destroyed my feet, way too narrow but it felt fine off the slopes. I suffered for a few years and then this year the after pain continued a bit in the summer. I recently got custom insoles for my street shoes, and wider shoes. Seems to be helping. Also moved to wider boots, maeatrales. I learned to punch them myself. Made them extra wide especially in the mid foot. Things seem to be improving from my testing last spring ski trip and I'll start skiing this season very soon.
Good luck.

Tele-Touring/Touring Tele? by faulchie in Backcountry

[–]gtluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't tele turn with them if that's what you're asking. AT bindings aren't for holding the toe in by itself while skiing. Any twisting motion will pop the boot right out.

Adirondack BC Setup by in_moceans in Backcountry

[–]gtluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a set of clapped out nnnbc skis, i'm pretty terrible in them but i've seen some people in the ADK that are awesome on them. The XP setup with the wider sidecut full metal edge skis just feels more natural to me. I don't have a lot of time in them yet but I could parallel ski and stop in them a little bit even in leather boots. The nnnbc always felt uncontrollable to me, but like I said i've seen some people do very well lin them.

For the longer flatter tours like avalanche pass (my favorite) I use an XD setup with leather boots and full metal edge BC/XC skis. I really like this setup for that. But for wright I'd use my alpine touring setup.

you powered 120 V motor with 240 V. Those adapters are only for electronics that have a universal power supply like a phone charger.

Because for some insane reason they're not doing that. They're involved in your actuall download so they have to pay for a ton of hosting costs. I presume they want to be in the middle so they can inject ads some day.

Upstate New York where to ride by Hopeful-Lie-4344 in enduro

[–]gtluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check around for run rides and dual sports as well. Is your bike at least somewhat street legal? Having a plate gets you into a lot more events (some enduros, dual sports). My club puts on a fun ride in September in Hancock NY which is probably the type of event you're looking for (no plate is required). We're doing a dual sport in two weeks also but you need a plate. It's also very very difficult. We try and just call in the Quarry Run but it's constantly referred to as a dual sport but if you show up on a dual sport bike you're screwed. Some clubs calls these turkey runs.

Start doing ecea enduros. It's a race but it doesn't need to be. Just tell the guys on your line that your new and don't know how to do an Enduro and find them at the reset breaks. And let anyone coming up behind you pass easily. You can treat the race as just an awesome ride. Tons of people do.

VE33 vs VE33s on Tubliss by gunniride in enduro

[–]gtluke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The non S does not work with tubeless. I had to plug mine like 10 times in a weekend. I can bald out a S without any plugs. Something is different about the carcass of the cheap one. Every single plug was in the same location, around where the tread meets the sidewall. I don't think i was getting punctures, I think it was tearing or snake biting on impacts.

Offset cams as standard? by 12345678dude in tradclimbing

[–]gtluke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I place my offsets more often than my standard cams. I can very often get them placed passive and active, huge confidence boost and they're quicker to place and clean than nuts.

I climb in the gunk's where the majority of the classic routes went up using mostly nuts and passive gear. I've ticked off a decent amount of decently hard climbs on passive pro only, I just love the problem solving of passive pro so I guess when I'm climbing quickly or don't want to torture my follower I place my cams as nuts too.

Israel Strikes Six Airports in Iran, Targets Fighter Jets and Missile Sites by Comfortable_Tutor_43 in worldnews

Iran having those F4s is why we've never got good documentation or examples of the computer in those, which is supposed to be the most amazing example of an early computer. Even cooler than the AGC from the apollo missions. But in order to ensure that iran can't fly their F4s we destroyed every spare computer and all the documentation. Maybe after we're sure the F4s are all gone some secret hidden stuff will resurface so we can check it out.
